Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Has anyone found a way to download the Amazon Alexa App (for mobile phone) here?
There's some functionality on that which isn't available in the browser version.

Thanks!

To answer my own post, in case any other Echo-owners are interested, I used a mirror site to get round the regional issues with Google Play and installed the app from there. You can still use your ordinary Amazon account and get the confirmation code sent to your Swiss mobile when you activate the app.

What the Alexa App allows you to do is set up 'routines' where you can get one or a series of smart home tasks started by using any speech you want.

What this means in practice is I can control smart home devices with more natural commands. I only had the option of a percentage or ON/OFF (plus a couple more commands) so if I wanted, for example, to open the terrace shutter, I had to say "Alexa, turn on the terrace shutter UP".
Now I can say "Alexa, open the terrace shutter" which is much more natural.

It is available for iOS but I guess you need to install through iTunes and it's not in the Swiss iTunes library.

Is there no way around that?

I had to use an UK itunes account to install it. And once you switch back to the Swiss store it wont' update automatically.

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Well it is kind of a conflict, from which itunes account you download may cause issues on updates, or you may not use local feautures, weather, cinemas etc.

So I do not use my mobile for reaching alexa features, but a laptop or desktop.

I only use my desktop but the Routines setup is only currently available on the phone. It's a one-time thing though - set it up and then forget.

I suppose, if you have a windows PC, you could try an Android emulator.

Updates yeah, but not the rest. You can set your alexa to Switzerland and use your Swiss address. Overall they don't really offer any kind of localized content except for the weather as far as I can tell.

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Hi,

even though I primarily use google assistant it was no problem to download the Alexa app to my phone. One of my gmail accounts is registered as being in the Us. It is all how I use the US version of Google play (movies).

I also use Alexa on my Amazon Fire tv.

Have fun
Martin

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

As this thread has been dormant for a bit.

After a few months of ownership, I thought my Echo would become less and less useful but I've found the opposite.

I use it more and more for new tasks. I'm now able to get it to say what I want in response to a home automation event or a time/date trigger and with the 'routines', I can use plain English to tell it what to do.

Here's some of things it does now:

"What's on today?" It tells us if there are any special events, which bins need taking out for recycling and other things.

"What's on tomorrow?" As above but for the next day.

"Supper's ready" Sets the lamps, mute and pauses Kodi and put's a "Supper's ready" banner across the screen.

"Check the doors and windows" Checks to see if any doors and windows are open and tells me which ones.

I've also got a routine for the kids if both my wife and I are not around in the morning before school (luckily it's not so often).
It reminds them, at different times, to have breakfast, clean their teeth, put their shoes on and what time they need to leave the house.
It's useful as they sometimes get engrossed in something and forget.

What is yours doing?

I had basically completely forgotten about my Alexa and just tried to install the app to my new phone and it doesn't appear in the app store (whereas before it did).

It's not in the Swiss store. I downloaded it from a mirror site here:

https://www.apkmonk.com/app/com.amazon.dee.app/

'Routines' are good if Alexa is able to communicate with any of your other home automation stuff.

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Thanks for the post Tom!

I have one in every room of the house now (except kids rooms as they keep putting candy on the shopping list). Been using it for timers, home automation (heavily), music (mainly the Sonos Ones) etc. Wish it had the smarts of Google Home though. Also still waiting for it to be officially supported in Switzerland. Looks as though that both Alexa and Google Home will be officially supported here by the end of the year.

I have my Echo in Africa and I cant get it to play local Swiss radio.
Would really like it to play RTS and Radio Fribourg but it doesn't regognise those stations.
Any tips on how to get them on Echo ?
Thanks.

Well, it'll play anything that's available on TuneIn radio - is the station you're looking for on there?

Those stations aren't on the TuneIn list but I'm not sure it's up to date as I can play Radio Pilatus on mine and that's not on the list.

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

According to Post head honcho thereís little chance now that Amazon has any intention to actually start an initiative to move into Switzerland. The post will offer them transparent customs declaration but that doesnít mean they actually want to offer anything in Switzerland. Guess official Alexa support not in the stars for the time being. Bit of a joke that we still canít even download the app. In Togo thereís no problem with that.

I got iOS. Plus I have it on my phone but only because I have an old UK AppleID. Overall itís just a bit ridiculous that they refuse to sell those to Switzerland when they do to pretty much every other country in the world through their US Website. No clue what their problem is. I bet they were planning on supporting it here using the Austrian model but ended up scrapping those plans.
