Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

I've finally found a use for our Echo dot which my wife really likes.

We recently bought a new Siemens Washing machine and I connected that up to our home automation. When the washing machine has finished it's cycle, Echo announces "The washing machine has finished and you can remove the washing".

There's no voice prompt needed either. It's good as our washing machine is in the basement and using the Echo is better than going down to the basement to keep checking whether it is finished and another load can be put in.

I'm going to add a random function so Echo basically says the same thing but slightly differently each time which sounds a bit more natural.

I also put Alexa on a RPi3 which is pretty straightforward following a Youtube video so I can use that on another project. Using openHAB, I can get it to say whatever I want without a voice prompt. You can change the wake-word too.

I use a combo of HomeMatic (blinds, weather station, smart plugs), Tado (heating + AC), Wemo (Garage door), Philips Hue for lighting and a bunch of eve smart plugs for fans in the basement etc. I recently moved most of it to homebridge so I can use it on HomeKit. Works like a charm, but I'm guessing Apple will sooner or later find ways to break it.

I don't get how Apple and Google support Switzerland with their devices (even though the HomePod isn't sold here it still works perfectly when used here, including data on local businesses etc.), Google even introduced bilingual controls for their devices, and Amazon won't.

P****s me off to no extent though as I think Amazon, especially since last week's announcements, has the most useful collection of devices now. Why is it so damn hard for them to just release the freaking app? They don't support a lot of countries with local content, but they have the app in pretty much every single local instance of the App Store world-wide except for Switzerland. If they don't plan on supporting Switzerland officially, they could at least release the app, non?

Maybe Amazon are not playing ball for commercial reasons.
Perhaps they are finding the Swiss Customs attitude to speeding up imports a real pain and are showing their distaste by limiting Alexa releases in Switzerland?

Interesting, doing a google-search on the subject - to developers forums etc results in a lot of dead-links to quite recent posts.

Which may very well be why theyre not selling a lot of stuff directly to Switzerland, but makes absolutely zero sense when it comes to the app.

Again: the app is available in most countries of the world, most of which have customs formalities that are at least as bad as the ones here.

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

In case you're using IOS, I'm using this method explained here: https://beebom.com/how-to-install-ge...d-apps-iphone/

Basically, you just change your Apple ID to reside on another country (e.g. the US). I used a friend's address just in case.

I was able to install Alexa app and will test setting up my Echo Plus tonight and will share the results.

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Hi

It is fairly simple to install the Alexa app on Android. Your just need to have a google id for Uk or us. I have been using Google assistant for a long time and recently started using Alexa on a sonos beam which is not as smooth as using an Echo. I am hoping soon Sonos will release Google assistance support from its beta phase. Alexa works well here but for me is still a long way behind Google assistant.

Have fun
Martin

Quick question from me. I can understand this technology for Stephen Hawking but why would a normal healthy human being need it?

Why do you have lightswitches in your apartment, when you could just light a candle. Lazy.

I could setup my Echo Plus successfully using the method above (Apple ID with a US address). However I had to change my country in Amazon to be able to use things like Spotify, etc. Since my Kindle account is attached to the amazon.de I ended up switching to Germany and everything works now.

This morning I just asked for the Bitcoin price and told my Echo Plus to start my roomba. Like StirB, I was just lazy to open 2 apps.

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

I am up to my 4th Alexa device, having received a Sonos Beam for Christmas (+3 Echo Dots).

One thing I have not figured out is how to stop listening to a podcast or radio show and then starting it again where I left off. Anyone know if this is possible? I need to have a look in the Alexa forums.

My TV does not have ARC (bought in CH in 2012, but it is plasma and I love it!), so not fully taking advantage of Alexa on Beam, but maybe it will convince me to finally move to LED...

"Alexa, pause"

"Alexa, resume"

The caveat is that if you ask the Echo do to anything else whilst in Pause mode, you cannot resume.

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Does Alexa have sound recognition issues?

Ex. with Siri (one of the many)

Me: Siri, what's the definition of "thorough"?
Siri: Here's what I found on "sorrow".

Freaking frustrating!

Maybe your accent is tough to understand.

My Dots can understand the whole family easily including Swinglish accents.

When set to German, it can understand my cr*p pronunciation.

I think it must be you - or Siri being a bit rubbish - or both!

I might have some speech issues, but my kid doesn't (it was homework), and had the same result. But I do understand what you are saying. We tried changing the pronunciation, and even the angle of the device, and it brought up a few other words, just not the one we wanted.

I was just curious if Alexa has similar limitations.

It wouldn't appear to.

It could be a hardware mic problem, or rather design limitation.

The Amazon Echo devices have multiple microphones. What hardware are you using with Siri?

I built one Echo out out a Raspberry Pi and used a single USB mic and the limitation to the comprehension by the device was definitely the cheap, single microphone.

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Thanks; was hoping there was something that would track where I left off and allow me to restart in another room, for instance. Or at least let me restart on the same device even if I have asked it to do something else. With Books on my Apple devices, I can open on any device and start reading from the page I left off, but maybe that is easier to achieve.

Also need to figure out how to access older podcasts/broadcasts using voice.

Doesn't look like amazon.com actually stopped shipping to Switzerland. Guess they found out that it's lucrative enough plus they've always dealt with VAT here anyway.
