I speak AE and have the Alexas set to that as well. I'd fail miserably at making it understand my BE attempts. I can't find Harmony in the skills!? How did you set it up?

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

It's definitely not supported yet:

https://www.reddit.com/r/amazonecho/...d_ifttt_in_uk/

Perhaps if you set it to US English? Or have you got betas enabled somewhere?

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Hi,

just use IFTTT and you will be able to control Harmony. I can switch the tv on or off, or select a station from Roku using Echo.

Just ordered a Google Home and awaiting for it to arrive. Looking forward to a full search engine and the integration with Chromecast + Chromecast. Looking forward to see how both devices improve over time.

Have fun
Martin

No such luck - IFTTT isn't yet supported on U.K. Alexas. How did you order the Home?

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Hi,

I did not know that. How weird. I have a US echo. I bought it online from Best Buy and some friends of mine are in the US for thanksgiving are bringing it back. Should be with them either tomorrow or on Wednesday. I use chromecast devices and have a google music subscription and so I am interested to try it out. I am aware that this is very much a version 1 device...and it will definitely improve over time. One big problem at the moment is that it is locked to one google account.

have fun

ended up ordering one on eBay - should be here next week. It was 139$ plus shipping and customs, ends up at 177 CHF - not too bad.

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Hi,

Google Home is here and I have been using it for a week. Really enjoying the integration with Chromecast and Chromecast audio. It is great to just be able to play it on a Chromecast device. Also the fact that it automatically knows the correct time zone and location. Downside it decides that my Google Music selection is limited to the swiss selection and not the US one even though I have a USA account and a smart dns. I am currently trying out Spotify Premium which seems much better if you are limited to the swiss selection.

It has no problem understanding my voice though if the music is loud it does not hear my voice....in that respect it is weaker than the Echo.

The search functionality is US centric and so you can not ask all questions and also there many search requests it does not yet understand.

Very happy I got it but is a work in progress.

Have fun
Martin

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Took delivery of mine this morning. Apart from some issues with my two Sony SRS-X88 (one of them isn't getting the Google cast 1.21 update and won't work with the Home and the other one I renamed which messed up the Google Cast setup), everything is working very smoothly. I have it set up with IFTTT, my UK-import Smartthings Hub and Philips Hue. Added Google Play Music (Swiss only) and Spotify, as well as Uber (which of course doesn't exist where I live).

One thing I noticed is that I mainly get restaurant and shop listings from nearby Konstanz. But I guess that's mainly because a lot of Swiss businesses refuse or don't bother getting listed on Google here.

Amazingly, everything works perfectly, even traffic for my commute etc. Together with Smartthings and IFTTT it's amazingly powerful.

I've already ordered two more :-/ if anyone wants some Alexas: I'll be selling them on Ricardo soonish. I actually prefer the looks of the Echos and the speakers also sound better, but while Google is pursuing an international approach with no restrictions, Amazon's focus on individual countries will likely be their downfall in this market.

So what's the best way to get a couple of Google Homes? Sounds like eBay?

yes, that's the route I took. If you head over to ebay.com (not .ch) you'll find quite a few vendors that sell them including customs handling etc.

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Even though you guys are moving to Google, I will be taking a delivery of an Alexa shortly.

As soon as I do, I will probably want to automate the lights. Which system are you guys using, and do you recommend it?

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Philips hue is the most common way to automate the lights. You need a starter kit with the square router box included.

There are several options here:

- Philips Hue: easy to set up, but pricey
- Lifx: also easy to set up, but each bulb is a WiFi AP and transmits at 100mw
- Z-Wave via a Smartthings Hub (which you'd also have to import), takes a bit to set up but offers a lot more than lighting

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Set-up my Google Home yesterday. Confirm it works fine here in Switzerland.

Even knows how much times it takes for me to drive to work.

Fun little thing at the moment.
