Apple and Google just need to put an always on mic in every phone and you get a device for free.
What do you do if you if several members of your family need access to the device?

An Amazon echo is much cheaper than a smart phone and none of the family is going going to walk off with it.

Hi there,

I see this is only really designed for UK and USA at present. Has anyone tried to use either model over here?

Does anyone use any other voice controlled device for home automation stuff (mostly Philips Hue lighting, Tado thermostat)? As an Android user, a Google alternative would be nice, but I think that's a good few months away...

Umm, have you read the other posts here? :-) the google home works perfectly well in all countries where google services are available. It also supports IFTTT and Samsung SmartThings, Uber etc for European users out of the box, which isn't necessarily a given.

Amazon Echo, otoh doesn't, unfortunately. A lot works but not everything.

normally everybody has their own phone. but if you happen to live in the stone age, i guess an amazon echo is pretty useless anyway.

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

My Google Home arrived on Saturday and have been playing with it all weekend. Have to say I'm pretty impressed so far...was easy to set up and it is playing nice with most of my devices.

Currently able to do most media stuff via IFTTT on my Harmony Hub, as well as cast loads of stuff to my Chromecast and play spotify to it also, all purely by voice.

It controls my philips hue bulbs pretty well and adds nice Room functionality, so you can say "Set all Living Room lights to Blue" or "Set Living Room lights to 50% brightness". Very smart.

The searching is pretty good too, some questions are still too complex for it, but for most, it brings back good answers.

Shopping list ("Add x to shopping list") and timer (I have an open plan kitchen, so handy when putting stuff in the oven to shout over to it) are extremely useful. It can even call an Uber, nice! Since I am teetotal for Jan, I'm driving everywhere myself, but i'll let you know in Feb how well that actually works...so far it got as far as "There is an Uber X 6 minutes away, shall I order it?".

Any tips on using Chrome Cast with alexa ? I have tried some basics but not looked deeply. I have seen some people controlling chrome cast but could not set it properly by myself

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Question echo people ..

My father in law saw this on TV (in the UK) and thinks he wants one.. He doesn't have any remote controlled lights, heating, alarm, no online music or streaming TV, doesn't shop online and reads a newspaper - made of paper and bought from the corner shop..

Does the device serve any purpose for him?

So far, mostly novelty that can quickly wear off. The most useful thing I have asked Alexa to do was to convert 375 degrees fahrenheit to celsius.

There are skills I have yet to activate. But I refuse to pony up any funds for any subscriptions.

This is mostly research on my part for reference.

I know what you mean there

I got a Dot for Christmas - relatively cheap and have a bluetooth speaker already

The concept is good but the benefit is limited over here....looking forward to the Sonos integration and I do like it for my audible books

In all, I don't regret buying it and there is potential but the lack of amazon in Switzerland limits may mean it never really catches on here

Now, 10 years down the line.....who knows

The echo includes a speaker but the dot will work with any bluetooth speaker (I use a UE Boom) and there is planned integration with Sonos (doesn't work now as Sonos not bluetooth)

Actualyl was surprised with the quality of the sound that comes form the Dot and it is a tidy little piece of kit

If you have 50 quid burning a hole in your pocket then there are worse things to buy if you have spotify, amazon music, apple music, audible and have a burning need to shout Alexa all the time!

I'd say no. If he wants gimmicks, he'd probably have more fun with one of those little robot dogs but even then the novelty would wear off after about five minutes.

I don't believe you can - you need to go via some third-party intelligent data routing such as using some software on a PC or a Raspberry Pi.

For example, I can control Chromecast using OpenHab (on a PI) and I can control anything in OpenHab with Alexa so I can indirectly control Chromecast from an Alexa.

There are other ways of doing it.

One is described here

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

M partner's name is Alex.

Alex, turn on the TV!

Alex, cook dinner!

Alex, what's the weather in London today?

It's much more useful than an Echo but extremely expensive and hard to reprogram. It interfaces well, though.
