Today, after checking several options on voice command related devices, I found myself checking Tesla
What is Tesla?

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Not sure what he means there.

I checked IFTTT, it seems at present there still isn't really a way to interact with your Tesla via Alexa/G-Home yet. Bit of a shame, it would be nice to ask Google to pre-heat the car as you're getting into your smalls.

Yes there is.

OpenHab (sorry to keep mentioning that) has a Tesla binding. OpenHab can understand Alexa. OPenHab can interface with IFTTT too.

You can do lots. See here

I'm beginning to think I made the right decision to use open-source software as the master-control for my Home-automation as it seems to be able to deal with everything that people throw at it!

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

Eek, this whole idea has a serious product flaw:

I hit a web page, and a video or audio file played an Alexa command through my speaker, and Alexa executed it.

It said, "Alexa, ask CNBC about the latest news."

I didn't think that was cool at all.

Am I right in thinking I just need an always-on computer to act as a controller on this?

Yes you do.

However, I'm using a Raspberry Pi 3 which consumes about 1.3W
(compare that with an always-on Philips Hue bridge which consumes 1.6W).

If you didn't know, it's the size of a deck of cards.

Hi there,

I see this is only really designed for UK and USA at present. Has anyone tried to use either model over here?

Does anyone use any other voice controlled device for home automation stuff (mostly Philips Hue lighting, Tado thermostat)? As an Android user, a Google alternative would be nice, but I think that's a good few months away...

I hadn't thought of creating my own controller. That is a good idea. What hardware are you using? This one:

http://shop.tecmatic.ch/de/controlle...berry-pi-.html ?

was it easy to set up?

Question echo people ..

My father in law saw this on TV (in the UK) and thinks he wants one.. He doesn't have any remote controlled lights, heating, alarm, no online music or streaming TV, doesn't shop online and reads a newspaper - made of paper and bought from the corner shop..

Does the device serve any purpose for him?

Oh yes indeed ..... He can set a timer to boil an egg ............ Or indeed get Alexa to teach him any of the 60,000 recipes on Allrecipes Skill

Finally, he can listen to the Ocean , Rain or Thunderstorms....

Get him a full Echo in black as the Dot does not do the thunder justice..

No, just a basic RaspberryPi 3 connected to ethernet and running OpenHab2.

It 'talks' to other items in the following manner (this is all I've done so far):

A couple of Arduino boards with ethernet shields using MQTT protocol.
(The Arduinos control stuff such as garage doors, temp sensing, other doors etc as well as safety sensors for the garage doors).

A Homematic CCU2 bridge over ethernet. There is an OpenHab binding for this. This controls remote thermostats etc over 868MHz.

A door entry system using an an OpenHab binding.

Other switches over wifi for lamps and heating using MQTT protocol.

Chromecast using an an OpenHab binding.
Kodi using an an OpenHab binding.

I'm adding an Alexa soon.

Yes but I guess that depends on your experience in doing these things. There's not too much documentation for OpenHab2 but it's pretty straightforward once you've found the right tools to help.
A bit of hardware and software knowledge would make things a bit easier.

The thing is - it's a pretty cheap solution and there's enough info on the web to muddle through.

For Z-wave, there's an OpenHab binding so I'd use that and either the board you showed or a UZB.

How does one do that? Is it built in, or a track from Amazon Premium?

Well my Echo's are set to U.S. account so I have access to 5000 Skills.
I use Rain Sounds, Thunderstorm Sounds and Ocean Sounds ...

Invoked with "Alexa play Thunderstorm Sounds " etc

When Alexa skills are developed and released, developers get to decide which Amazon websites are allowed to list them... There is extra work due to language testing for Amazon.de .

So, for Osram Lightify bulbs , we have the ironic situation that the Lightify Alexa skill , developed in Germany is NOT released for Amazon.de , only Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk

Re: Amazon Echo / Alexa

I know a lot of the discussion has been a both the relative IoT skills of both the Amazon Echo and Google Home, but what about sound quality? To be specific, how does streaming of Spotify compare to something like a SONOS Play 1?

I'd say the Echo's sound quality is comparable to a Play 1, but the Google Home sounds pretty crappy. I use it in combination with Sonos speakers (connected via chromecast dongles).

Sonos have committed to Echo Integration Later this year ( Via a Skill ) . You also might like to check out the new Lenovo Echo Clone, announced at CES , specifically made for those who want better sound ( and it's $30 cheaper than a real Echo )
