Re: iway internet

I have been using them for exactly two months now. So far, no issues with the connection - it has been stable and reliable. I use 100/100 via fiber.
I paid absolutely nothing for setup and my first three months of usage are free with one testing month. So far, so good.

Re: iway internet

Hi! I recently got interested in iWay, and I have a couple of questions for iWay users on EF:

- does it allow dynamic dns service, meaning, do you get a visibile IPv4 so that you can connect to your house from the outside?
- if I don't have fiber connections inside my house, do they handle it? Do I need cables outside of the walls or an electrician will come an update my sockets?
- if I have another provider, can I try iWay without unsubscribing to the other service?

Oh, I live in Zurich and my address is reported as "covered".

Many thanks!

Re: iway internet

disclamer: I have a contract with iWay for 3+ years, I use fiber connetction (Zurinet), other type of connections may work differently.

"does it allow dynamic dns service, meaning, do you get a visibile IPv4 so that you can connect to your house from the outside?"

Sure. I use it. Actually I don't even use dynamic DNS as my IP haven't changed for long (and you can have IPv6 address too)

"if I don't have fiber connections inside my house, do they handle it? Do I need cables outside of the walls or an electrician will come an update my sockets?"

Not sure as in my case I had a new physical line (Zurinet fiber). As far as I remember they sent a technician too, but it was as easy as connecting the device. But anyway if they say you are "covered" they will solve the issue.

"if I have another provider, can I try iWay without unsubscribing to the other service?"

If you want to use the same physical connection I don't think it's possible.

Re: iway internet

Bumping thread to ask if those that have used/have iWay are happy with it?

We just installed iWay (the glasfiber 100/100 Mbit/s plan for CHF 39-/mo) and I'm thinking that either our connection is not good, I ordered the wrong plan, or the service isn't as good as others.

In the US we had a 100mbps download plan, and would get consistent download speeds of 80-90mbps. It worked for our family, supported virtual work-at-home, Zoom, and two kids gaming.

Since installing iWay, I've been running speed tests and am only getting between 14 - 65mbps download.

I don't really understand the difference between Mbit/s and Mbps, so that could very well be the issue -- but I don't really know and Google isn't illuminating me. Please be kind...I'm a middle-age woman that is trying to keep up with technology.

Re: iway internet

Please remember that what you subscribe to is "up to" the speed you chose.

I ordered the 1000/1000 and I regularly get 400-500 (both ways, upload and download), at least testing with ookla.net . So I would say 65 sounds "fine", 14 is very slow and it may be a sign of a problem (I hope).

Are you using the same laptop to compare speeds here and in the US?

Re: iway internet

Thanks, scrabblegrey.

Yes, completely understand that getting the advertised speed is a bit "pie in the sky". I'm hooked up to the modem, same computer as US, and a bit surprised that it's so all over the map in terms of speed. Just now, I did a speed test (Ookla, as well) and it was 32mbps download.

I guess, I'm going to have to make a switch - either bumping up the speeds with iWay (or maybe to Swisscom).

Re: iway internet

Some iWay users are being upgraded from 300 Mbit/s to 1Gbit/s, unilaterally, for free.

Source: iWay.

Re: iway internet

Yes, @venetian, we received an email about this upgrade. Supposedly, it would take effect immediately, but we felt no difference. I continued running speed tests throughout the next couple of days and there was no improvement. Decided to switch to Swisscom, and made one last speed test for a direct comparison: At noon: iWay was 34mbps download, by 12:30 (when Swisscom internet was installed) the test was 191mbps. I'll pay CHF 20- more a month for the same service/speed, but hopefully with much better consistency. It's too bad, because I really wanted to support the small company! Hopefully, they'll get things worked out.

Re: iway internet

Don't use Ookla to do speedtests. Most ISPs have a superfast connection to one of their servers. The speed you get there is not reflective of the speed you get on other sites. Try fast.com (by Netflix) or https://projectstream.google.com/speedtest (by Google Stadia).

Re: iway internet

I got curious from the comments above and just installed a speedtest program (https://opensource.com/article/20/1/...et-speed-tests).

These are the best results so far:

Quote:
Retrieving speedtest.net configuration...
Testing from Iway AG (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)...
Retrieving speedtest.net server list...
Selecting best server based on ping...
Hosted by iway AG (Zurich) [2.19 km]: 3.031 ms

Testing download speed............................................. ...................................
Download: 693.57 Mbit/s
Testing upload speed............................................. .................................................. .......
Upload: 420.79 Mbit/s
I repeated the measurements a few times, as nadeemoidu mentioned the values are lower when hitting other servers, see as an example:

Quote:
Retrieving speedtest.net configuration...
Testing from Iway AG (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)...
Retrieving speedtest.net server list...
Selecting best server based on ping...
Hosted by Mobile Breitbandnetze GmbH (Freisbach) [212.78 km]: 13.114 ms

Testing download speed............................................. ...................................
Download: 84.17 Mbit/s
Testing upload speed............................................. .................................................. .......
Upload: 80.20 Mbit/s
In any case the speed update seems to have taken effect, at least in terms of peak performance.

Re: iway internet

Thanks, nadeemoidu! I'll definitely use that one next time.

Regardless of the speed test results and how they were measured, it was not meeting expectations. I'm glad that those of you with iWay are happy with it, and wish that we would have had a different outcome. Just wanted to add our experience with the company.
