The TV box just needs a connection to the network, you can put any bridge/repeater etc between the TV box and the SC router. You may have to open ports up on the intermediate device if that has some firewall functionality, but as long as the TV box can connect to the network and thus the internet (and the connection has enough bandwidth) then you're fine.

Re: Can i connect swisscom TV box to Apple repeater

Hi JagWaugh,

I tried that and there doesnt seem to be a firewall but not sure how to connect it. It comes up with 4 options - direct connection, wireless etc. but the wireless one asks me to press the + button on the main swisscom router. Not sure why that would help to connect it to the repeater but i tried that anyway and didnt work.

Any tips welcome.

Re: Can i connect swisscom TV box to Apple repeater

Have you verified that the apple repeater is working correctly? To do this, plug a laptop into the Ethernet port on the repeater, and turn off the laptop's wireless - if you can still browse the internet, then you know that the repeater is connecting to the WLAN correctly and presenting a working network connection at the Ethernet port.

In your situation I would use a wired connection from the repeater to the TV box, then select wired in the TV setup.

I'm guessing here, but I suspect that if the apple repeater is a straight wifi repeater ant it is working then you would select "wireless" on the TV box, then go and press the + on the swisscom router.

If you're using an intermediate device connected to the Ethernet port the Swisscom box will see it as a direct connection, not a wireless one, so just choose thus option instead.

This is what I understood to be the case - if the Apple repeater hasn't got some builtin firewall function then the TV _should_ just behave as if it were connected straight to the Swisscom unit, either via WLAN or hard wired.

I would take the wired connection (from the apple repeater) as I have often found that when you use a WLAN repeater that if the clients are in an area where the WLAN signals overlap and are nearly the same signal quality then the client will sometimes jump back and forth between one source and the other - with a laptop this looks like a minor network issue, but with a multimedia stream it would play havoc with the player.

Re: Can i connect swisscom TV box to Apple repeater

The Apple Airport needs to be set up in "Bridge Mode", and the wired connection needs to be plugged into one of the LAN ports, not the WAN port, for this to have a chance of working.

If the OP is just using the default configuration of the Airport then it'll be working as a NAT router (which means any device connected to the Airport will be behind a double NAT config - generally a bad idea), and the TV box won't connect to the Swisscom router.

That said I'm not sure if you can configure the TV box in this manner - it may be that for a wireless connection the TV box needs to be connected directly to the Swisscom router. So YMMV.
