ZVV Windows XP

ZVV is still using Windows XP for their "on screen" thing in buses and trams. Seems a little primitive considering Microsoft does not support XP.

If they've taken measures to make sure that the systems are protected from hacking (i.e. no connection to any network other than their own) then why bother?

It's just a box which displays info. It runs on the hardware that they have installed, and they long ago figured out how to provision them and protect them.

Besides, even if the box is hackable, what would you do? Change the scheduling so that the bus/tram appears to be late for every stop?

50%????

Every now and then you see the autologin boot screen barfing over itself, but it's hardly 50% of the time.

There was a time when most of the bankomats were also running XP. Not sure if that is still the case.

I think it's some Linux distro, at least it is/was in trains that have them. I've had the pleasure of seeing one of those screens stuck in reboot cycle, and it was definitely Linux or some flavour of *NIX. I wouldn't be surprised if the ZVV tram screens are based on, or are the same.

This was, however, some years ago, just after the introduction of them, so it could be that they now run Windows.

If you give (me) physical access to any of the Mobo connectors then it doesn't really matter which OS you're running, I'll manage to find an exploit (and I'm not very good at hacking.)

In Hollywood this would allow a mad muslimist to hijack a tram and drive it straight into the lake.

It's Windows XP embedded, support ended about a year ago. The Eurofighter Typhoon's 16 computers that continually adjust trim and actually make the thing flyable, run Windows NT 3.5 - not embedded.

Filled with boiling cheese fondue. The following explosion wakes up the long dormant Swiss Godzilla's sister.
Which, with a profound disapproval, turns it's back to overpopulated land and slowly drifts in the directions of mountains.

You're missing the disaster film aspect: causing the tram to arrive late at Uetliberg!!!

The out of control tram must not follow any recognized tram route.
Everyone on board will be American

but no, it doesn't because against all odds an American ex-soldier manages to save the exploding fondue-tram, heading to the lake or Uetliberg, while also contacting the head of US military, getting an airplane and bombing nuking Godzillas sister.

Not sure if I missed something here...

Surely the ex-soldier is visiting his ex-wife and daughter - and they get back together again at the end?
