UPC 2mb/s Free

So I'm moving to Zurich in the next few weeks, and have an apartment sorted (yay!).

I'm told by the landlords that there's a UPC wire in there.

The council gave me a big sheet of broadband providers, most of which fluctuate around the 100/100 mb/s @ 59CHF, which seems pretty good, but not from UPC.

So I started thinking, I keep reading about a "free" tier @ 2mb/s (which is about the speed I get in parts of the UK, but let's leave that bit out ) which would work for me for a month or two before I find out about the other providers and upgrade.

That said, I can't find the free tier on their site. Does anyone know if that still exists?

M.

Re: UPC 2mb/s Free

It was never free - you still had to pay cable connection fee, which is 30-40 Fr/month. The fee was in the past usually charged only indirectly, though Nebenkosten, leading many people to mistakenly believe it was free. But it wasn't. They recently changed that and new contracts now include the fee explicitly in the price

My understanding is that that's already included in the rent, and would have to pay it anyhow... regardless of what "bundle" I went for...

So free in terms that it costs me nothing extra.

Yes, but it's optional - if you don't need the cablecom socket, you can ask the landlord to have it sealed and stop paying the stupid fee.

Fair enough - but my understanding is that the alternative is Swisscom (at least without a UPC line), which doesn't do internet on it's own faster than 250mb/s... I have no need for a landline (haven't had one in years), nor do I want cable TV (have Netflix and Amazon prime for what I want to watch).

So my idea was to go "free" for a month or two, giving me time to sort out a faster internet package later on without being locked into a 12 month contract. Especially considering that I'm not in Zurich at the moment (only on weekends).

Am I missing something?

Re: UPC 2mb/s Free

Surf from mobile via tethering. Swisscom data is only 2 CHF/day unlimited on the prepaid sim, that you can throw away any time. It's only slightly more expensive than cablecom's base fee, and let's you surf on the go whereever you want. Swisscom's daughter Wingo mobile is also not bad from what I hear if you have a budget of 50-60 Fr/month to spend on mobile.

Re: UPC 2mb/s Free

I am in exactly the same position, a cable connection from cablecom (UPC), but without actual access to the 2mbps internet that supposedly comes free. I called UPC and was told that if I dont already have one of their modems then I cant get that internet, and I will have to get their 49fr plan. This would involve cancelling the landlords cable connection contract, and create a new one (where the 40fr cable connection fee is part of the 49fr). That would lead to much faster internet, but I dont like their tactics.

I am most likely going to go with a mobile internet solution, Salt or Sunrise. That way I am also going to avoid the TV+radio billag that no one ever mentioned (451Fr a year), and just pay for the radio (165fr).
I am in the process of testing which provider gives better reception in my apartment by using their prepaid sims.

Re: UPC 2mb/s Free

I don't think your cablecom subscription has influence on billag. What matters more to them is what devices you have: you have laptop, cellphone or a car, pay up for radio. If you have a TV set, cough up the TV fee too. They also want to charge tv fee if you have some "IP TV account" online, even if free, but that's hardly enforceable and can be disregarded

The system is changing however, very soon everyone will pay the TV fee regardless if you watch/own it not. Yay, more taxes!

Re: UPC 2mb/s Free

The cablecom is a TV subscription, unless you actually do have an IPTV subscription for internet tv then the billag for TV doesn`t apply. If they can use regulations to drag money from us then we can use the same regulations to avoid it, until they do just make it a universal tax, at which point I will have no choice.

Re: UPC 2mb/s Free

Without an actual TV set you don't really have pay the TV fee (for now), even if cablecom forcibly shoves "free" TV channels down your throat with an internet subscription. Radio fee however is hardly avoidable and is basically just a tax on everyone
