TV / Radio License - Mobile high speed internet

Hi there,

After doing a bit of a reseach I found out that TV license becomes mandatory if you have a fixed-line internet contract or own devices capable of receiving radio/TV signals.

So I decided to drop the idea of having City Cable account and I just bought a `Mobile High Speed Internet` from Salt. Have been using it for 2 days and I am quite happy with it.

I do not watch TV and I dont own one. I do not have a radio or a car with radio. All I have got is an old (5 years) laptop with dead battery, a samsung cheap tablet and an old iphone 4s (none of these devices have apps to receive TV or Radio signals)

I rarely use my laptop (only to print something, because its connected to the printer).

Was wondering if I still need a TV or Radio license? Should I call Billag and ask them to send me the invoice or just wait till they ask me to buy one?

Regards,
Gem

Re: TV / Radio License - Mobile high speed internet

Only radio license is needed if you have internet, regardless if it's high speed or not, cable or cellphone. You're supposed to pay radio if you have internet because you can listen to radio (but not tv apparently!) over internet, or if you have cellphone because it uses radio signals - that's billag's irrational logic.

Pretty soon though TV fee will be obligatory for everyone.

Bad research. As the above is WRONG!

You need a TV license if you have a device which can receive TV signal such as a TV, DVB-Box, VCR, sat receiver OR you have a subscription or account (paid or free) with an IP-TV provider which allows you do watch live TV streams (Netflix and Amazon prime are NOT IP-TV providers). Watching the SRF stream on the SRF website, or watching TV on Zatoo w/o an account or subscription DO NOT need a TV license.

You need a Radio license if you have a device capable of receiving FM or AM Radio signals, or SAT radio, or DAB radio, or internet radio streams (Swiss or foreign). The last means a device which has internet access with at least 64kb/sec and software for receiving such streams. If you use classic dial-up through an analog modem with 56K modem you do not need a Radio license.
Getting rid of all streaming capable software is nearly impossible. It means no iTunes, Windwos Media Player, VLC, etc..

Important Note: There is a TV license which is for TV only and there is Radio license which is for Radio only. Neither covers the other.
If you want to receive TV AND Radio you must need a TV and a Radio license.

Answer: You will most likely need a Radio license.

See: https://www.billag.ch/private/fees/
and in more detail with all laws and regulations

The law changed January 1st of this year, you pay regardless of having a TV or not.

Re: TV / Radio License - Mobile high speed internet

Thanks for your clarification. I checked on the website, it seems so, bad luck.
I was reluctant to buy a TV and even considering a projector.
But it seems TV sale should see the boost from 2019

There is a transitional period of 5 yrs during which opting-out is possible, only after that period everybody has to pay.

Could you provide a link etc. about opting-out? I did a little research back in January and concluded that everyone needs to pay.
