Paying Billag was as optional as the 120 km/h speed limit on the Autobahn.

If you do not use the Autobahn you do not have to respect it. If you use the Autobahn it is still optional and nothing will happen when you do not obey it. How I know? In over 20 years I never got a speeding ticket on the Autobahn!
I have an acquaintance who says, the speed limit is optional up to a point. If you can't afford to pay a fine of say 120CHf here and there, you shouldn't really be owning a car in the first place.

can someone summarize what has changed vs Billag in terms of consequences, if the fee won't be paid?
You will be jailed, and then kicked out of the country.

Maybe not.

The Billag vote was won on the back of a lot of promises, many of which SRG will struggle to keep. Traditional programmed TV is more and more becoming a thing of the past. SRG rightly argued that quality journalism is something of value, but their arguments went wrong when they trtried aied to claim that they were part of - or want to eb poart of - that quality journalism, which clearly they are not and are unwilling to become. SRG is a 20 Minuten masquerading as an NZZ. In the long term, that's not going to work.

I believe that when this vote is repeated in say 10 years, that the result will be quite different.
I hope the vote will be repeated before then!

the errors are not due to Serafe, and the percentage of inaccurate addresses is very small.
I didn't say they were. But the fact that there are errors and that old data is being used just shows you how poorly organised things are.

If your acquaintance was doing 130Km/hr and had an accident, the fine and/or other punishments/costs would be a lot more than 120CHF.

I'd tell an acquaintance like that if he's not prepared to do jail time then, with his attitude, he shouldn't really be owning a car in the first place.

By then we'll all have a receiving chip embedded in our head and no-one will be able to opt out.

Those living in Ticino will get a special version of the chip constantly playing re-runs of Italian Rai Uno dance/quiz shows until their heads explode.

You saw it first here.

Re: Tv /Radio Fee exemption

you have no radio? no way to pick up radio (eg in a car or built into your phone) no way to pick up TV (hint - if you have a pc then yes you do)

they have pretty much bolted the rules down to make sure everyone has to pay

Surely you just apply for the exemption though? That way you do not have to pay.

Does the following link work?
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/live:bbc_radio_one
or this one, form a private Swiss radio?
https://www.radio.ch/player/

If either is answered with yes, then you have to pay. Regardless if you actually listen to BBC, Swiss private radio station, or the public SRG SSR channels.

You could move apartments and agree with the candidates that they pay your bill

Nice one, but we left before Serafe started thankfully. Though naturally we would have applied for the exemption had we have stayed. We did not ever pay Billag and nothing ever happened with that. I can't see what has changed. At least during the transition period of 5 years, which has only just started, you still do not need to pay, so nothing new there yet.

So you were either stealing it, or paid through it through other channels.
Unless of course you didn't have any personal internet (English foruming from work or internet cafes of course)

Correct. Billag has at least 80 threads and those seem to be just the ones with the word Billag in the title !!!! https://www.englishforum.ch/search2.php?q=billag
