Prepaid SIM Cards.

Hey everyone,

I have been using my UK contract phone in the Switzerland but it is running out soon. I want to move over to a Swiss number but I dont want to take out a long contract again. I was wondering who is the best for providing prepaid SIM cards (Pay as you go in the UK) over here?

Ideally i'd like at least 3GB of 3G for as cheap as possible, as for calls/texts I dont mind.

Many thanks in advance,

Shane.

Re: Prepaid SIM Cards.

Lycamobile sells data cheaply, 2GB for 9.90 or 5GB for 13.90. Total shit otherwise IMHO, tariff system with bundles, "bonuses", website, UI are a horrible half working mess and not worth the pain. It seems almost intentionally designed to make you either overpay or suffer trying to get everything cheap. But using them solely for data in a dual sim phone is quite passable: you only need to suffer once when setting it up for the first time, then it can just work and automatically charge your cc

Re: Prepaid SIM Cards.

For a normal contract I know that UPC-Cablecom have a short cancellation period, now between 1 and 2 months, maybe some others are offering similar conditions, especially if you don't take up their "free get a new one " mobile phone contract, and stick with the SIM only contract. They nearly all offer free calls inside Switzerland, so a Pre-Paid isn't always very attractive.

Re: Prepaid SIM Cards.

I've been on Lycamobile for ages and it's dirt cheap and totally reliable. I buy data each month and make occasional calls, never had a issue with coverage, CH, FR, IT, DE, UK.. All work fine. The 'feel at home' thing means that calls, sms, data (only 3g abroad) all work perfectly while abroad.
I probably pay not much more than 100chf per YEAR, including international roaming.

Downsides.. Support crap - so i've heard but I've never needed support. Everything is 30 day rolling, use it or lose it.
Strangeness like sometimes I have a UK IP address, from here in CH..
Services like buying a ticket for the tram via SMS don't work.
LTE / 4G is limited speed, seems to be capped at 20m/s .. Does anybody need more?

Get a couple of pre pay SIM cards and try them for free, or the cost of a topup.

Re: Prepaid SIM Cards.

I like Lebara, but as far as internet goes, I only pay 5CHF/month for a teensy amount.

Does anyone know where I should/can go to activate a Lycamobie sim card, and also what is the rate for international data roaming? (i.e. Roaming within Europe)

Re: Prepaid SIM Cards.

lycamobile sells you 1GB of roaming data for EU for 12f
which actually is very reasonable for a swiss carrier
after use up 1gb can just buy another.. hunt of the website
to buy it. good for 30 days..

Re: Prepaid SIM Cards.

I can't see any offers on the Lycamobile website for data roaming.
In my opinion for Swiss customers and with the almost complete abolishment of roaming surcharges in the EU from June 15, it makes sense to directly get an EU SIM card. You just have to be aware of some (slight) restrictions.
With the new EU roaming rules phone companies in the EU can introduce 'anti-abuse' rules for customers who would otherwise use their SIM cards for roaming ONLY in other EU countries. The rule states that abuse would apply if someone used the SIM card for roaming for more than 4 consecutive months. Once a 'roaming abuse' has been established, then the EU phone company can make a surcharge on the data rates until the 'roaming abuse' has ended. Currently the maximum allowed surcharge is about EUR 9/GB. The 'roaming abuse' surcharge is quite reasonable already and set to decrease further in the next couple years. Therefore it makes sense to obtain a (second) EU SIM card for Swiss customers because even with a 'roaming abuse' surcharge this will still by much cheaper than purchasing EU data bundles from a Swiss provider.
If you have an EU country you often spend time in, then get a prepaid card from that country. If you use the SIM card in the originating EU country from time to time, then that will also reduce the likelihood of ever getting hit with a 'roaming abuse' surcharge.
In my case, as I tend to spend time in Austria a couple of times a year, I got a prepaid SIM from Drei in Austria with the Nimm 3 Klassik tariff. If I need data bundles, then I can purchase these for EUR 5/GB over their website.

Re: Prepaid SIM Cards.

what's the latest status here?

I just moved from the UK and I realized my giffgaff isn't working.or it worked for a little while and it charged me A LOT because my balance is now 0.

Ideally I'd like to get a pre paid sim card with lots of data. The giffgaff was 20£ for unlimited data.

thanks

Same as before. Why would anything change in a couple months? Lycamobile/Lebara will give you cheapest data per GB if you don't mind the horrible UI. For unlimited data I'd recommend wingo, but at 55 Fr/month it's not cheap.

ACTUALLY your GG is not unlimited its 6GB fair usage... and EU roaming does NOT include SWITZERLAND for GiffGaff so it ATE all your $$$$..
GG excludes Swiss roaming as its not in EU, after JUNE 15th... they modded
their tariffs then.. dump GG for Swiss Roaming.. I did..

Re: Prepaid SIM Cards.

get lycamobile.ch stupid cheap calls
and data for use ONLY WITHIN Switzerland... as that is a +41 number
and they offer up to 10-30GB of data for almost nothing.. if your roaming
then forget it.. SWISSMOBILE offers 2GB for your quoted price..

I personally use 3UK at it Roams in EU+Swiss+30 more places.
20 quid gets you 12gb of uk data or 9gb of roaming data... monthly

The perfect solution for abroad this summer..

ps: at some point 3uk reserve the right to cancel the or block the account
if your out of uk for say like 4+ months in a row.. TC/etc
