Speakers Advice - Wireless, single room

Hi,

I'm interested in getting a wireless speaker for my house. I don't need multiroom. It is for a large room (living room + kitchen with no walls in between).

In previous posts I've noticed that there were some people with quite some knowledge about sound, cabling, impedance and quite technical details that called my attention. Hope they read this:

- I'm thinking of Geneva Large or something like that (http://ch.genevalab.com/product/model-l/). Could you either recommend or discourage me from getting this? Any other brand that I could consider? (I guess Sonos is another option)

- Is there any rule of thumb of Watts needed for a room based on X square meters? Or any recommendation on the size of the speaker for a given room?

Thanks,

Juan

If you can wait, you can try Apple's HomePod.

Quality is apparently quite good, for the size.

Re: Speakers Advice - Wireless, single room

The main contenders (read: mainstream, supported, common) would be Sonos or HEOS by Denon.

We have 2 x HEOS 5 and HEOS 3.
The HEOS 5 is very good at filling a 40sqm room

Sonos have equivalent speakers.

Kindly quantify. Do you own one or have you tested it out?

Re: Speakers Advice - Wireless, single room

It really depends on how snooty it comes to your music quality taste.
If you listen to standard MP3s: the world is your oyster, you can get any system depending on how basic the quality you want.
For listening to MP3s around the house, I just use the UE boom.
If you have a fine ear and appreciate higher quality of music, then money is the limit as good speakers can go into the 10s of thousands.
For sitting down to relax, listening to my CDs and lossless music, I'm very happy with my B&Ws.

What has it got to do with snooty. And if the OP was interested in Geneva Large then he is looking for quality

No intention to offend, was a bit of a light hearted comment.

Personally: I can tell the different from listening to MP3s vs CDs for the same music, but I can't tell the difference between the 20 franc speaker cables I use and that which sells for a few hundred francs a meter.

edit: didn't see his mention of the desired system.

Re: Speakers Advice - Wireless, single room

If you appreciate fine music reproduction, buy yourself a proper Class A Single Ended tube amplifier, such as ones made by Audio Note UK for example and corresponding speakers.

It will never go out of style, will never get outdated, will NOT lose its value, will always sound great and will continue to work after all the current streaming services and wireless technologies are replaced by something else.

Problem is, it's not wireless so sorry for going offtopic

I really find this so misleading. MP3 can sound just as good as CDs at the proper bitrate.

MP3s got a bad name in early days, but high-bitrate MP3 can easily match CD quality

If you appreciate good music then buy yourself a pair of decent floorstanding speakers and a good amp. For the price of one of these overpriced wireless pieces with a wireless chip and otherwise a cheapo little speaker, you can get a very decent system.

Why does it have to be wireless? Is it so hard to run some speaker wires?

Personally, I absolutely disagree here (of course dependant on the production quality of the CD recording, and playback equipment). 320 kbps has a noticeable difference from FLAC or CD, and a good majority of MP3s in people's collections are not even at 320.

In theory or in a studio: Yes.

In practice (on their home system, no matter how high end that is) I am ready to bet that 99% of people could not tell the difference in a double blind test between CD and 320k MP3.

On a wireless speaker - even B&O. no way...On a pair ok canton reference 1K driven by a tube amp, maybe 1% of the time

True, comes down to a lot of factors.
99% of people don't have a system which makes a difference, and 99% of the people wouldn't care even if they do.
But there is the 1% who truly appreciate a good recording and excellent production---for those situations 320 will just sound flat (and again, 320 kbps is relatively uncommon, unless you specifically encode it yourself, or search it out yourself).

Frankly this 1% would be asking for advice from avforums or the like and not EF
