How to know if there is glass fiber reaching the apartment?

Hello!
We are moving into a new home soon and I wanted to set up the internet connection in advance. I spoke with the current tenant whether there is glass fiber reaching the apartment, but he did not know. He sent me pictures of the port, but it did not look like fiber and there was no OTO-ID.
According to Swisscom site, there is fiber connection reaching the building, but I cannot find out whether there is one reaching the apartment. The landlord agency also do not know that.

Any ideas how I can figure out and also how long does it usually take the provider to get you surfing?

If the home owner and the provider don't know. You are only left with a visual inspection yourself.

We had a few moves and we always upfront gave the provider the dates, and they always switched at the perfect moment for us.

Are we talking about the city of Zurich?
Than you can also check here: https://avc.zuerinet.ch/

They may have to bring up the cable from the basement to your apartment.
If that is the case you will need a simple confirmation that the landlord is o.k. with that. There should be no extra cost. At least in the City of Zurich as it is paid with tax money, additional cost may occur at other places.

The fiber network in the City of Zurich is an open one. Apart from Swisscom other provider also offer various services http://www.meinzuerinet.ch/#service-provider. A particular good offer is the Fiber 7 from Init 7 for 777 CHF/ year giving you an 1 Gigabit symetric connection. https://www.englishforum.ch/tv-inter...97-fiber7.html

Thanks for the replies. I just called the provider. They checked in their system and confirmed all apartments have fiber in the building, so it should be OK now.
I picked green.ch. They have a decent offer for 59 CHF per month 100Mbit/100Mbit. 1 Gbit is cool, but too much in my view, I do not believe I would really utilize it entirely.

That is 708 CHF/per year. 10x more speed costs you only 10% more. ;)

More important than that is to cancel and get the the UPC Cablecom TV socket sealed. That saves you around CHF 30 per month

Will you be having a 24 months contract with them?

24 or 12, you can choose, 3 month notice period.

green.ch tend to be notorious for their termination terms. Be careful that you don't end up with only one possible termination date per year. A 3 month notice period is not going to be useful if you can only terminate once per year on a fixed date. Iway https://www.iway.ch/privatkunden/ offer the same as green.ch with more flexible terms.

Don't like to rain on your parade but some didn't have such a good experience

Re: How to know if there is glass fiber reaching the apartment?

Okay, so I signed with Iway more than a week ago, but they are very slow at responding. Once registered online and ordered service, I received an email from them saying that they find fiber connection reaching the property and they request OTO-ID. However I am unable to find the box with the OTO-ID (I still don't live in the apartment, but we checked together with the current tenant). The only box we could find is the one in the living room reaching the router and it has no OTO-ID on it. I responded the same to them. Even I sent them a picture. And after one week of waiting, they ask me again the same question, although I called them twice in the meantime asking for status, which they were unable to provide over the phone as the guy just kept saying, you will receive an email.

Is there something I am missing? My understanding is that the box with the OTO-ID should be in the apartment, not outside in the hallway, or the basement.

Look also near the circuit breaker, telephone outlet, and power outlets.
It looks like this https://www.init7.net/de/support/faq/OTO-Dose/

Once again what does https://avc.zuerinet.ch/ saz regarding availability?
For example in my case, with OTO sockets in the apartement, it says 10 days.

Re: How to know if there is glass fiber reaching the apartment?

Quite frankly, I do not seem to find it anywhere and it is a small apartment.
I also get 10 days according to https://avc.zuerinet.ch/ but that is based on the address of the building and not the apartment itself.
Furthermore, I find it quite unusual that there are two internet boxes - one with fiber and one without.

I am very pissed, because now I have to wait for probably at least two more weeks until they get it sorted out. Especially if they have to call an electrician to set it properly.

One is from the cable TV provider;) Actually, you have a third internet capable socket: The good old telephone line :D

It is called diversity.

Back to the topic: Did you also look inside the breaker box, or a similar box or cabinet? Behind furniture or appliances that were left in the apartment? Open anything you can open, look behind anything where something can be hidden. Look near the floor and look near the ceiling. Look in any room you have, even the toilet, the hallway, and the walk-in closet.

Looks like there are now OTO sockets which are part of a regular power socket
http://www.zidatech.ch/de/news/squeeze-oto-dose.html
or telephone socket
https://www.wingo.ch/media/wysiwyg/i...tique_true.jpg
What they all have in common is the visible OTO number.

can a mod please rename this thread to remove the word 'glass'?

makes me think of some fibreglass steps up to the apartment :)

Re: How to know if there is glass fiber reaching the apartment?

The provider told me they would need 10 working days once they have the OTO-ID to start the connection. Quite frankly I do not understand what they need 10 days for. Those are two full weeks without a connection.

Is there an interim solution that you guys can recommend? Something different that 4G on a phone used as a transmitter, because that would limit the data transfer. Maybe something that would allow at least some streaming.

salt 4g works great for me. i bought a good 4g router from amazon for about 120chf. its reliable and fast (9ms / 250mb/s). i actually gave up both my fibre and fixed cable internet.

I have been thinking of switching as well (from UPC 500 Mbit/s so slat 4g), but according to Salt.ch the speed is currently at 150 Mbit/s and not the double 300 Mbit/s which seems to be the figure you get.

How exactly did you measure this figure of 250 Mbit/s which is pretty impressive even if at theoretical max 300 Mbit/s?

How stable is it? I need a 100% uptime connection because of working remotely 60% of the time. I have a Salt subscription and have OK signal quality at my home so I guess it should be OK...

Re: How to know if there is glass fiber reaching the apartment?

I get 250 with the SIM in my 3rd party router. just using speedtest.net on a wired connection to the router. uptime has been 100% (i have a VPN client running from inside that does not reconnect if the connection drops - i never needs reconnecting).

I also used to have both fibre AND cable for reliability and this was my backup. both cablecom (terrible) and swisscom had issues with reliability so when i moved i just kept the Salt.

its worth noting that its a natted connection - so you can't forward ports to get in from the internet to your home network. i solve this using a VPN which is way more secure anyhow.

What 4g router?
