no encryption is secure.
If you think that for example a million years is o.k. to break an encryption, then yes it is unsafe.

Yep this is a good solution for getting around restoring the app data issue. Still a lot of hassle and without knowing what else would be lost I'm not sure it'll be worth it.

I already came across that info from Apple about "nothing can be done", that's why I was surprised when someone seemed to think different. To be honest I wasted enough time on this that I would rather just carry on paying for iCloud storage until I switch over to something else... obviously not Apple!
You'll have plenty of annoyances on Android as well, so I'd think carefully before you jump ship. In my personal case, I long ago opted for iCloud backups anyway; local backups seem a bit risky (e.g. If there's a fire, I lose everything). For the most part, apple devices still have a simpler and more trustworthy operating model than android devices... but it does come at a price, in both CHF and flexibility.

And so it begins..
I think you are correct. As I left the bar I jumped into my Jeep and a kid ran up to me and said..."Señora...there's a storm coming!" as he pointed to the mountains in the distance..."yes you are right" I told him...I then drove off cursing under my breath "another effing wet night at Paléo!..."

Get a windows phone. MS is going to stop support, so they are cheap! But has just about everything one needs.

That doesn't quite make sense Why would anyone get a phone where the manufacturer will stop supporting it?? I mean if it was a rare piece maybe one day it will be worth something but I doubt this for a Microsoft phone...

I think I prefer to get the new Nokia 3310! I was actually gonna buy one from mobile zone! But on second thought I decided against it as apart from nostalgic reasons I don't see any reasons for getting one as I also have a cheap Nokia 3120 classic that I use as a secondary phone.

Re: Is Apple trying to force people to pay for iCloud storage?

Apple finally have a fix for this so I thought I would update the thread...

If you can’t remember the password for your encrypted backup

You can’t restore an encrypted backup without its password. With iOS 11 or later, you can make a new encrypted backup of your device by resetting the password. Here’s what to do:

On your iOS device, go to Settings > General > Reset.

Tap Reset All Settings and enter your iOS passcode.

Follow the steps to reset your settings. This won't affect your user data or passwords, but it will reset settings like display brightness, Home screen layout, and wallpaper. It also removes your encrypted backup password.

Connect your device to iTunes again and create a new encrypted backup.

You won't be able to use previous encrypted backups, but you can back up your current data using iTunes and setting a new backup password.

If you have a device with iOS 10 or earlier, you can't reset the password. In this case, try the following:

If someone else set up your device, ask them for the password.

Use an iCloud backup instead of iTunes. If you don't have an iCloud backup, you can make one.

Try using an older iTunes backup.
