Problem; Access Gmail with Mozilla Thunderbird on desktop

I have a little used Gmail address. I noticed it has not received any new emails for a long time.

After a lot of messing about I found Google was blocking my login because I am using a "less secure app".
I found out where to switch on use "less secure apps" and now everything works again. Just mentioned in case it helps anyone

Go to the "Less secure apps" section in My Account to fix it.

Microsoft Outlook is also blocked

what "less secure" apps are you running that it might consider to be dangerous? Had you downloaded something new shortly before gmail and outlook got blocked?

Google considers the following two email apps as "insecure"
Mozilla Thunderbird
Microsoft Outlook

This is stated on the Google site!

Yes; Google's trying to warn you that you're at increased risk of credential theft if you use those products, but they give you the option to accept the risk and get on with using them.

Re: Problem; Access Gmail with Mozilla Thunderbird on desktop

lots of blogs on this... it's the authentication problem. Bottom line, google has changed their challenge and the fix...

in thunderbird - for both (imap) incoming & outgoing servers...
1. change server settings for your account - change "normal password" to Oauth2 (imap port 993 / smtp port 587)
2. sync your mail folder
3. quit thuderbird
4. launch thunderbird
5. change servers back to "normal password"

should be OK with having to 'open' google to allow less secure apps
