Billag - how did they find out about me?

After several years in Switzerland I received my first letter from Billag yesterday. I would really like to know how they got my contact details. The only things I can think of are that I recently got a new mobile phone from Sunrise and I also recently applied for a Coop "Supercard". Is it possible that Sunrise or Coop sold my data to Billag?

Billag have asked me to fill out a form on their website and have given me a date in September to have it done by. What (if anything) happens if I just ignore this letter?

I am not dodging paying Billag as it is paid by another person in my household.

If it is paid by another person then why not simply tell them that? They already have your name and address as do numerous other businesses and institutions in CH.

Because Billag is a private company and I don't see why I have to tell them anything. They already know who pays Billag for my household and are just looking to have me take care of an administrative task for them in order to reduce their costs.

So basically you are willing to cause yourself more stress by fretting about it and ignoring them, thus making them contact you repeatedly, than by sorting it out with a simple call and making sure they don't contact you further... all out of some misguided 'principle'. Makes perfect sense.

According to the data protection act you can just ask them what the source of the data was, and they have to tell you.

235.11 Ordinance of 14 June 1993 to the Federal Act on Data Protection (OFADP)
https://www.admin.ch/opc/en/classifi...159/index.html

235.1 Federal Act of 19 June 1992 on Data Protection (FADP) (art 8 sect 2)
https://www.admin.ch/opc/en/classifi.../index.html#a8

How would they know you're sharing the household with someone?

Because someone with the same address has already paid Billag?

Is there an obligation to pay the fees if I live in a shared accommodation? The radio and television fees are paid per household and not per device. This also applies to shared accommodations. This means that one of the room-mates has to register and receives the invoice while the other people in the household are listed as room-mates on the invoice. If anyone moves in or out of your shared accommodation, please let us know on time and in writing.

With the new law Art. 69g RTVA they can get the addresses directly from the commune. https://www.admin.ch/opc/en/classifi...ndex.html#a69g
But till January 1st. 2019 the old law from 2016 applies. Art. 86 RTVO
https://www.admin.ch/opc/en/classifi...index.html#a86

Billag is a private company. What they put on their website does not necessarily reflect a legal obligation.

According to beobachter.ch

"Muss man das Online-Formular der Billag ausfüllen?
Nein."

"Must one fill out the online billag form?" "Nein"

You are as bad as Billag Mr. Rambo.

Correct answers to the question "Do I have to tell Billag anything?" are:

Yes, if your situation regarding needing a Radio license or a TV license has changed or the information Billag has is incorrect you must tell them.

No, if nothing has changed regarding needing a Radio license or a TV license and the information Billag has is correct you do not have to tell them any shit and they can bugger off. You do not have to reaffirm that the information is correct.

Which they do not have access to

But SERAFE (successor of Billag) will get the residency register which has the information who lives in which household. ;)

Who says yours isn't a sublet? That would make for two different households, each with the requirement to pay.
