Your hard drive or motherboard could have died. If it's a reasonably new laptop, take it to a laptop repair shop. If it's old and doesn't have any data you can't afford to lose, then better to buy a new one.

Also, learn how to use Google to do basic searches for error messages https://www.google.ch/search?q=sony+...hrome&ie=UTF-8

Safe Mode is part of the OS - so it's not going to be able to find that either.

Re: My Laptop won't start 😪

Try starting it from the rescue disk (which of course you didn't make when you got the computer ).
You can also try using this link (German, sorry)

Re: My Laptop won't start 😪

The only way to get it started as it is would be with a startup or 'recovery' disk. It used to be common that a new machine would come with such a disk (a cd/dvd from around W95 onwards) so it's worth checking in your cupboards and drawers in case you have one. Failing that, search for Recovery disk for your OS on Ebay, Amazon, etc. and you might get lucky.

But even if you can get it restarted it's most likely that the hard disk is damaged/corrupted such that you'll need to reformat it and reinstall the OS, at the very least, which would make any previous contents unusable. I do hope you have a backup of anything important.

It might work, it might not work.

It is part of the OS yes, but it's a very limited part and depending if something is broken in the OS and what is broken it might be the way to find out more about the problem. Same goes for the BIOS, see if the hard-drive is listed, if not reset BIOS and check again when still not showing up i would myself just throw in a new drive and toss the old one in the garbage (First check if all is plugged in properly off course...)

No, the point here is that the boot loader can't find the OS - wherever it is looking, it is not finding an executable.

Adding some parameters to indicate safe mode, which is all that happens, is not going to change the fact that there's simply nothing to run.

The most common reason for this is that the OS disk is broken, as you say this can be checked in the BIOS, but I would do some tests first before throwing it away, or you could be replacing the wrong component.

- wiggle any connections in case of looseness
- try the drive in a different machine to confirm it's broken

Then you have to decide if the drive is worth replacing vs just buying a new laptop.

Probably the (internal) PSU was the underlying cause - real toast indeed.

Had the same with one of my work laptops - helpdesk started with the usual "are you sure, can you switch on / off / reboot", I told them the smoke was a bit of a giveaway and no way was I plugging it back in!

At that stage, what did you call helpdesk for?

Because you have to open a ticket. No ticket, no issue, no help, no replacement. The joy of working in a big company. It is really funny when they request That you have to send the ticket from the affected machine because the young plebs either just stumbled upon BOFH or which is more likely are utterly incompetent and as bright as glass of pickles.

For replacement too? I see.

For the rest I used to figure out, who was good at his job in helpdesk .... and call his direct number

Re: My Laptop won't start 😪

Here's what you need to do.

SWITCH OFF THE MACHINE, THEN SWITCH IT ON AGAIN (this is the good old I.T Support advise)

On a serious note.

Check this one out. Apparently the issue is common to VIAO Laptops

I recall the time I was locked out of logging into our network, so no internet, no emails etc. I'd raised a ticket and was waiting patiently all fsking morning for a reply, then when I eventually got fed up and called them back again the 'agent' dealing with it was out for lunch, but had updated the ticket. reset the account and emailed me the new password. Not the brightest of sparks.

Some have a recovery partition on the hard drive/sdd, Worth checking the BIOS to see if you can boot from somewhere else.
