UK Mobile (After abolishing European Roaming)

Now that the EU roaming has been abolished, can anyone recommend a cheap PAYG UK Sim where the unused credits lasts the longest without having to top up to keep the sim alive.

I’ll be using a cheap Nokia mobile when in UK as I’m reluctant to change the sim in my iPhone as this messes up “Whatsapp”, “Viber” and people cant get hold of me calling the Swiss number. I wish iPhone comes out with a technology where SIM cards are no longer needed to attach to a network.

I’ve heard that “Three” doesn’t support basic Nokia that uses 2G network and they cancel the sim if you’re away from UK more than 3 months. Also “Giffgaff” does not recognise Switzerland as part of the EU roam free zone.

It will be also useful to know the reciprocal network used in CH by UK providers.

Re: UK Mobile (After abolishing European Roaming)

I use o2 paug SIM card. Is “alive” last 6 years while I’m in switzerland. I use it just whenever I’m in uk. I just top it up when I’m in UK. It was out of any phone from December until just a few days ago ( I’m in uk now) and my sim works just fine. I just put it into my swiss Iphone, no any messing up with WhatsApp. WhatsApp works still with my swiss number while telephone is now on O2 network.

I'd not be so sure if the UK is allowed to keep profiting from it once the EU got rid of them, though..

Thanks Leyla,

I was also contemplating on o2, Three and EE. I believe EE has a new PAYG deal where you pay £1 per week.

Re: UK Mobile (After abolishing European Roaming)

I have been using 3 for several years, needs a 3G phone. I now have a monthly contract. I use it in Malta, France, Italy, Switzerland, USA & UK. If I am in the UK I stream some video so my UK data rate is on average above or equal to foreign use, never had any issues & often not in the UK for over 2 months.

Data speeds are quite slow when roaming so may look at switching to Vodaphone.

Isn't Switzerland not part of the EU, thus the roaming charge legislation doesn't affect us?

Yes, and? This thread is clearly not about Swiss service providers. There's a whole thread about that elsewhere.

I.e. the OP is looking at using his/her UK sim in Switzerland as well, as part of the EU roaming, which doesn't "work" as Switzerland is not part of the EU.

Re: UK Mobile (After abolishing European Roaming)

I have been using my UK 3 mobile sim for the past 2 years here in Switzerland, there are no roaming charges. Maybe it depends on the network provider, but 3 have a list of "feel at home" countries on their website http://www.three.co.uk/feel-at-home so you can probably look it up for other providers too. I'm not sure about the 2G network thing with 3 mobile though

Feel At Home is designed for UK residents who are on holiday or business trips abroad. It is not designed for extended periods abroad–see ‘usage restrictions’ in our support pages.

Many companies include Switzerland, USA & plenty of others with free roaming, just because it's not a legal requirement does not mean its not available.

However the fair use rules have changed & they can now charge a bit for data if you go over certain limits. Those limits vary 12GB with 3

We use the £1 a week deal on the gate to our house, anyone who rings the doorbell gets through to a mobile phone. Very useful if your away most of the time.

A lot of providers in the EU treat Switzerland as being in the same country category as for example Germany and Belgium when it comes to roaming, to his question is not so weird.

Re: UK Mobile (After abolishing European Roaming)

why does whatsapp get messed up? that's the whole point of whatsapp - you can use any sim. i frequently switch sims - no issues with whatsapp - it just asks you if you want to change your number and you select 'no'.

i use EE. they cover CH, have no 'fair use' roaming policy and provide increasing amounts of data and minutes for 10 gbp / month. lasts at least a year out of the UK if you have sufficient balance.
