| | Is it worth SALT 4g for home internet?
Hi volks, https://www.salt.ch/de/plus-swiss-promotion/
I ran speedtest in a handy with salt from a friend at home and it was amazingly fast: something like Down:100MB/Up:50MB.
Could I consider using this as the home internet connection or is there some limitations that I cannot see now? Can I use it for torrent once in a while, Ps4 downloads and netflix? 50 - 100GB / month
What I don´t like is that I have to stay with them for 2 years... but the price is really good (35CHF for unlimitieirt data)
Thanks

Look at the 12-month contract instead; the box might cost you more but you're tied in for less time. Up here in the mountains we average about 35 MB down which is plenty for surfing, streaming etc., just if himself if gaming the rest of the Internet is noticeably a little bit slower

your IP keeps changing, so if you run a server that you want to be able to reach from the outside you have additional hassle.
For all other purposes I guess it's fine!

its not the IP changing that's the issue. its the fact its a private address behind NAT. so completely unreachable from the outside without a VPN. easily solvable with a VPN though and the better solution than punching straight into your home network from the outside anyway.

depends. if you want to connect to a NVR or something it might be. most retail solutions for things like home robots and stuff already use some sort of tunneling mechanism behind the scenes though so you'll not have a problem.
anything where you might use a dynamic dns service such as no-ip would not work. if you don't know what that means, its probably not a problem.
i understand it might be a problem for 'gamers' too, but it not something i know about.

Offer is now at 19.95 until tomorrow (24 months contract) and I am really tempted to go for it instead of a regular WLAN, since I do only regular surfing and YouTube sd/hd.
Any additional thoughts from anyone?

I would really check the actual speed at your house before committing to a 24 month contract, for example by checking with Salt pre-paid.
We used Salt mobile as internet connection of our place in the mountains, via tethering, but found performance is really poor. Now we have Sunrise Internet Comfort mobile for 19 CHF per month, for 10 MBps with much better performance. We can stream, for example, Netflix in HD with no problems.

Since I am not in Switzerland now will wait to come back, run a few tests and if the speed is acceptable, will wait the next promotions, seem quite cyclical with Salt.

Just to update, our connection seems to have got rather slow lately. Also we found the Mifi box has a limited of 10 devices connected at any one time which becomes messy with the family visiting. Right now I'd love a "proper" Internet connection but the cheapest round here for anything approaching the speed we still get with the 4G is heading towards Fr 100/month i.e. nearly 3 times as much
ETA we're currently getting about 3 Mbps download and 11-14 Mbps upload on Salt. Does not compute, not happy

I'm canceling my subscription, I live in Basel and I never get more than 5MBps, but most of the time around 1,5Mbps and sometimes even 0,5MBps. Check your speed before signing anything.

It is indeed depends on where you live. If you are in the city center the speed would be high, if you have a park or you are outside of city it is very low. I have 2 friends they live in Thalwil and they are very unhappy with the speed. If you like to stream tv it seems the network is not stable.

On a slight side-but-related note, does anyone have any info on the rollout plans for fibre? Swisscom's website says they expect every community and 90% of homes to be connected by the end of 2021 but their chat can't or won't give any idea of when we're likely to get it

I live in both Lugano and Luzern. I have Salt 4G for everything. Threw away all my previous connected services. Had been with Swisscom and then Cablecom, both expensive and useless.
Now I use a portable 4G wifi mobile which fits in my bag if I ever want to use it away from home. (But have loads of data on my mobile phone for that)
Cannot praise Salts 4G network enough. I use it for everything. All my internet (can hook up to 10 devices) Watch TV with Zattoo, stream movies.
(Don't know about games, don't play)
Cost is around 35 per month. I don't believe in contracts. I have a monthly service I can cancel at any time with one months notice.

Well, since our local cable provider has new plans with effect from 1 Jan 2018, I've given up on Salt 4G as our sole Internet and reverted to 125 Mbps cable - to the box (in fact we're getting 128+). We suffered really badly with the influx of people and the weather over the holidays and our Internet connection is as critical to us as electricity.

When I tested it a game reported that I have a strict NAT with SALT and as such have higher pings, more general lag and higher chances of being booted from games. It was true, I noticed what they said. I rang SALT and they can't / won't change this setting.
I work in IT but am not too familar with the networking side of things. I'd be greatful if you could help me out a little with this? Have you set something similar up before?
Thanks!
