Is it worth SALT 4g for home internet?

Hi volks,

https://www.salt.ch/de/plus-swiss-promotion/

I ran speedtest in a handy with salt from a friend at home and it was amazingly fast: something like Down:100MB/Up:50MB.

Could I consider using this as the home internet connection or is there some limitations that I cannot see now? Can I use it for torrent once in a while, Ps4 downloads and netflix? 50 - 100GB / month

What I don´t like is that I have to stay with them for 2 years... but the price is really good (35CHF for unlimitieirt data)

Thanks

Look at the 12-month contract instead; the box might cost you more but you're tied in for less time. Up here in the mountains we average about 35 MB down which is plenty for surfing, streaming etc., just if himself if gaming the rest of the Internet is noticeably a little bit slower

Re: Is it worth SALT 4g for home internet?

your IP keeps changing, so if you run a server that you want to be able to reach from the outside you have additional hassle.

For all other purposes I guess it's fine!

its not the IP changing that's the issue. its the fact its a private address behind NAT. so completely unreachable from the outside without a VPN. easily solvable with a VPN though and the better solution than punching straight into your home network from the outside anyway.

I'm moving house in 2 weeks and am basically decided on SALT, the only issue is their NAT / internal IP issue. When I tested it a game reported that I have a strict NAT with SALT and as such have higher pings, more general lag and higher chances of being booted from games. It was true, I noticed what they said. I rang SALT and they can't / won't change this setting.

I work in IT but am not too familar with the networking side of things. I'd be greatful if you could help me out a little with this? Have you set something similar up before?

Thanks!

Re: Is it worth SALT 4g for home internet?

Hi folks, just want to add my experiences on this topic.

I live in a VS ski station and have a Plus Swiss Senior mobile contract with Salt at 59/mth with unlimited data. I then added a Multi Surf SIM at 10/mth which is supposed to share the data allowance between mobile and tablet - but I have put it into an LTE router which should give me a well priced combined mobile and home internet service.

The service has been fine for over a year except there is a significant reduction in download speed (almost to zero on occasions) between 9pm and 11pm most evenings which means that Netflix or Zattoo drops to a very grainy picture for a while. My family also complain of poor or loss of connection during this period on their laptops. I'm trying to determine if this is due to Salt or my router (DLink) or the number of visitors in the ski station or what.

If I do a speed test on my mobile, it is usually 30 to 100 Mbps which should be adequate for anything I want to do.

On my laptop (via the router) I've run an auto test every 15mins for 3 days using Testmy.net and the graphs show a lot of fluctuation all through that period but confirm the dips to near zero around 9-11 pm.

I've also borrowed a different LTE router (TP Link) with similar results.

The strange thing is that if I tether to my mobile at these times, data rates are absolutely fine! My next test would be to put the mobile SIM in the router and run the tests over again, but I don't wish to be without my mobile for that long.

My French is not up to argument standard so I have yet to attempt to discuss this with Salt, but does anyone suspect, as I do, that their data only SIM is being throttled somewhat? I don't know what else I can do to identify the source of the problem, so any thoughts would be welcomed.

Thanks!

People say this but no one really elaborates. Can you? Was it the actual Internet service, the customer service, or something else?

Have you tried inserting the Internet sim into your phone to test? It sounds like evening heavy usage is slowing you down, much like a cable provider as all the data needs to go across a limited pipe.

Yes, keegs, I did a while ago but inconclusive as it wasn't for long enough (family kept complaining that I was disrupting them). But, you're right. To be completely rigorous I need to try all combinations for several days each to get enough data. Trouble is, each time I swap something, I have to reset the TV and Soundbar as they're on wifi - still, no pain, no gain. I'll try to give an update when I've done this but it might not be until next week.

It may depend on the environment in your area but I also have similar quirks. I tether internet via phone, works well for a while, like a month or a few, then it drops the hotspot speed significantly. The only way to fix it is to re-flash the phone firmware. I have tried everything else but no success. The phone is good apparently. It must be some setting stored. I have no idea how to fix in a simpler way. I have even tried to postpone, wait a day or two to see if the problem fix itself whilst the phone is off, no success.

Re: Is it worth SALT 4g for home internet?

Hi Leszek that's interesting thanks. I've used tethering for a few days at a time so not seen that behaviour from my phone yet. I've been running my Multi Surf data sim in a Samsung S5 and tethering for two days now and still get a significant drop in speed in the evenings. Next I'm going to try my phone sim in the S5 to see if it behaves differently from the data sim. If everything is consistent, then it will confirm that heavy data traffic across our village is causing my evening slowdown.

Sounds like a deal provided there are no hidden costs to activate the phone socket. UPC have also reasonable price but you have to pay 35 chf a month on top of that to activate your tv socket.

Since you were concerned about the speed, out of curiosity I also did periodic measurement. My results:
- morning < 9 o'clock = >20MB
- < 16 = between 12 and 20
- between 16 and 23 = < 10, down to 5

I don't complain though, it's good enough

Re: Is it worth SALT 4g for home internet?

For anyone considering Salt I can only speak from my experiences. Most people on here have advised me against them for various reasons including experience and technological grounds.

I've been with them now for 2.5 months and I've never been happier. Super fast, super reliable, fantastic customer service, low pings for gaming, and cheap! I'm on the CHF35/month plan and it's just great. I'm using their free Zattoo Internet TV thing and more am watching and recording channels from England for free too.

Just my 2 cents..

Re: Is it worth SALT 4g for home internet?

I have been with Salt 4G since Dec-18 and must say, it was a huge mistake to switch from Cablecom.

Agreed, the price is lower but thats basically to latch on. Erratic billing since the last 6 months, 2 disconnections later.. I would just say one word... AVOID

And yes, they charge a 30 chf reminder fee on a 19.9 chf monthly fee (all the while I having a standing order on my bank a/c)

- A very annoyed customer locked to a 24 month contract
