How about Internet on the notebook with USB modem???

Orange.ch:

Data volume unlimited
Internet Everywhere Max
49chf per months...

It looks even cheaper than ADSL (swisscom ADSL 5MB 49chf + phone line 25.25CHF + electrician)

Option iCON 515m

Functions
  • USB modem with exclusive design
  • high-speed data transfer (HSPA/UMTS/GPRS/EDGE)
  • download speed: up to 7.2 Mbit/s*
  • upload speed: up to 5.76 Mbit/s*
  • size: 84 x 28 x 15 mm, weight: 33 g
  • Plug & Play (no CD required)
  • micro-SD memory card reader
  • SIM-lock
In theory it can go up to 7.2Mb/s!!!

Looks WEIRD??

Anyone has this?

Re: Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

(rant_mode)

Having moved out to the sticks we have a local interwebs provider called Thurcom.

Here's the story so far:

Fill in the forms and post off to obtain the Internet 20000 service. Meanwhile, instructed to contact the local agent, Wattwil Energie, for what to do in order to receive cable modem.

Told to arrange an electrician to inspect the connections inside the house and send them a report saying he's done it. Did that.

Next, told to arrange an appointment with the cable guy so he could check connections in the cellar. Did that. He said all ok. Modem arrives. Whoopee.

Of course, it didn't/doesn't work. So, call Thurcom Support Hotline. Support is basically non existent as in "have you tried turning it off and on again". Still doesn't work? take it in to EW for a test.

EW only open mornings and afternoons Monday to Friday. Bit of an issue that as we have to work to pay for things like internet access. Meanwhile talk to them (EW, not useless support) - they say electrician has to come back and do stuff. He does. Still doesn't work.

Luckily boy has the afternoon off school so takes the modem in to EW. They look at a piece of paper (not a PC, so it's not a computer says no situation) and say the elctrician has to send them a report and then the cable guy has to come and do his stuff - then they will activate the modem. Deja vue time.

So the modem isn't activated? How come Thurcom Support didn't know that? How come EW didn't know that until a physical presence made them look at a piece of paper (I think they do have compooters but only Commodore PETS).

Today we will try to get the electrician to to talk directly to EW and/or Thurcom.

Honestly, it's like living in the dark ages.

This has been going on for 2 weeks. I am unhappy and just starting to get a lickle bit annoyed, as might have been noticed.

Update: Had electrician and cable guy visit together yesterday afternnoon and we are now plugged back into the matrix - hear that silence? That's the kids reabsorbing the interweb.

On the plus side, the speed and quality of the connection are excellent (careful, now, early days) and we get just under the promised max of 20000kbps download and the full 1000kbps upload. TV quality is the best we've had in Switzerland inc. Sky. Shame there's not more HD channels in English but I guess they will be coming in the future ......

Hop 200chf in the electrician's pocket...

Anyone with a brain ever tried to question the fact that every time someone is moving on the same property (flat, house, etc...) has to pay for checking if the line has good quality enough???

Like it's going to change...

To be fair, we were the first connection in this case and did need the sockets etc.

Re: Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

Well i know that city cable is prolly the cheapest and the best for lausanne..
at 20 CHF you get amazing connection and no obligation of having a phone.

However i'm soon to move to nyon or rolle.. and am struggling to find a provider as good and cheap as citycable.. Also hoping to get a good cable with international channels... EPSN and HBO and stuff..

Does anyone know who i can contact or which provider i can use?

Well you are blind or self focused and you don't care about people who dislike the television.

Citycable Lausanne, you must PAY for Digital TV about 26chf in addition of the As little as "20chf" you mentionned.

So we are already close to the 50chf. Ok the "speed" seems faster for the same prices-

That suppose your building has a "return line"- We don't have it in our building, either the landlords or the régie, have to pay for a "return line", otherwise we are stuck with T.V only... No internet via Cable for all

Wake up!

It DOES say on the Internet with citycable thing...In the "General Conditions" you accepted by registering with them:
http://www.citycable.ch/img/depliant.pdf

Part 3, page 6/10:
Internet Access can not be dissociated from Access to Telereseau which cost is not included in Internet package.

EDIT>:
ps: Mr "nottrue", check your electricity bill, and have fun. (that's where it mention the TV connection fee)

Why paying for it then?
Why financing something you don't like-or want?
Why making everyone pays a lot for this crap TV connection? (we already paying TV in Billag- AND in the building charges: at least I do in my building, included into 150chf charges).

PS: don't answer because there's no answer to that- They have monopolies and the good people are never going to question it, they are too dumb and passive for that.

PS number 2: you have to pay me 10chf per month for my own post subscriptions. Don't worry you DONT HAVE TO READ THEM! Oh wait i'm not "official government crap", it's not going to work, you're going to question those 10chf and tell me to feck off. Weird, it works one way only!

Re: Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

Here is my 2 cents/rappen : ( and the reason why i took Cablecom)

I phoned Swisscom and Cablecom on Wednsday :

Swisscom Adsl Offers :

Download 20mb
upload 1 mb
Price 69 Chf per month

Delivery time is 2 weeks

What they don't tell you in the add , you need a telephone line so add 25 chf per month to that bill, regardless using the phone line for calls or not.

They offer you Adsl without a phone line if you have a mobile phone package with them,for..exactly, .. 25 Chf

So the total monthly charge is 94 Chf ( this was the only option he could give me)

Cablecom :

Download 20mb
upload 2 mb
Price : 50 Chf and a once off 30 chf activation :80 chf for the first month, after that the Monthly charge will be just 50 Chf

I rang wednesday afternoon and ordered , got a " welcome " letter on thursday and by 11.30 on friday morning, i received a post pack with my modem.

Plugged it in the socket, and after 5 minutes i was surfing at 22mb speeds over the interweb

So handsdown, Cablecom works out the cheapest and fastest, so far no complaints, loving every bit of it.

Happy to drop the overpriced Orange Mobile Usb Stick at 5 Chf per day, its slow, drops out every so often and their customer service agents are rude and unfriendly.

That's all folks

Joey

Re: Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

Just upgraded my previous cablecom 10meg to 20meg.I have choosen a specific date for the change and i got it exactly then.no need to change the modem but i had to get a faster wifi router - 802.11n

Fyi wireless lan techology 802.11 allows no more than half of nominal speed usually (802.11g-54M in best case scenario gets to not more than 25M in download)

Now I have around 23,5 Mbps from my pc

Interesting. I have just signed the lease on a new apartment and the building is wired for Cablecom to the wall socket in all the apartments.

I presume Cablecom provides the cable modem unit?
Does Cablecom provide the wireless router ?
I have a 'free' one from Unity Media in Germany where I had 6Mbit. No idea if it is 'N' - compliant.

The offer page
http://www.cablecom.ch/en/b2c/internet.htm
has theoretical max of 50Mbit for 60 franks.

Would the customer actually get something near that or am I better booking 20 Mbit (which is already very quick) ?

Re: Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

Yes, they provide the cablemodem and they offer also wireless router, the one for 99,- is good enough for 20M.

Wireless routers are more or less standard, not sure what you have got from unity media but you can certainly reuse it. different story is the device speed.

dont know about 50M, but as I said I get slightly more than 20M -

they do not offer 50M in my area

In the early days before capping the new connection... In theory, 300MBps, Was good whilst it lasted :-). That's over a 50M CAT6 cable.

Settled down now to 60-98Mbps

Awesome speeds and reliability. Zurich 8008
