Re: Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

Looking at changing my DSL provider. Cable is not an option for us (not connected, there is a local cable provider, but this is not cablecom, and would cost a small fortune to get connected).

Sunrise seems to be a good option as the cost includes the line rental. Also Orange as having a mobile with them gives an extra discount.

Hmm... Decisions decisions.

For those also looking to shop around, you might find this useful:

My experience has been that the only consistently good provider (across a few cities) with respect to speed is SwissCom.

So does anyone have CityCable without the TV? I dont need all these bells and whistles but they don't offer on their site the 20,000 kbs without TV and Phone!

Everyone else is so expensive. Even VTX is another 25 Francs for the phone connection. Grrrrrrrr. I love Lausanne but I am gonna miss Cablecom

Re: Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

I am moving from my apartment and I decided to get Cablecom, 20Mbps + Telephone for 57.50chf/month. Now I am a little bit frightened because the owner told me there was cable preinstallation, but I don't trust him entirely. Until I see it working I won't be totally sure.

I just hope the speed is steady, because in my old apartment I had Swisscom and usually it was ok, but every now and then the connection went down from the usual 5 mbps to barely 0,1 or 0,2. I had to reset the router to get it back to normal.

Re: Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

As I've seen, cable internet is not available in Lausanne, so the only choice is ADSL, right?

I've seen that there are 3 major ISPs: Swisscom, Sunrise, Orange. Am I missing anyone?

Thanks for the info, I didn't know these things.
What if I don't want to pay for a cable TV? In that case, is aDSL the only choice?

Re: Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

Hi Listmates

Am writing this as no one else seems to have mentioned this and the poll on Internet connections doesn't mention it.

I'm in Lucerne and am using the figlass cable put in by the ewl (electricity works luzern) in our area as my Internet connection. It came with a WLAN modem/router and connections have been troublefree.
Very fast, it also offers TV and phone through pluz+ ( a local company). This was all part of a free trial (3 months now!) to see how potential customers like it.

Other reason for mentioning this is that I'm wondering what options are open to me to replace my Sky sub. and eliminate the cabling needed by the dish two floors above with all the associated cabling.

I'm thinking of a Mac laptop feeding my HD TV through a direct HDMI cable.

Would be interested in hearing people's opinions about what's around (and with the proviso that, yes, they keep moving the goal posts and who knows what options next year will bring).

Rgrds

Martin F. Sl.

You must pay the 26chf something for "Cable TV socket" + the small 30chf /months for the 8MB internet= total 56 CHF for 8MB.

For ADSL you must pay the 26chf something for the "Phone line" + the 30chf something for the Internet, approx 5MB for that price.

In any case it's same amount more or less.

I would go for CityCable if it's possible for you, and if you dont need phone line (but then.. SKYPE!)

Re: Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

Hi

I am just moving to Lausanne and I was wondering if there is any option to get internet connection without a one year contract. As I am not sure if I will be longer than 5 months a one year contract doesnt seem suitable for me

Thanks in advance

Re: Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

Just want to add Cablecom is not always a perfect provider. Speed sometimes could be very slow due to bandwidth sharing, and the quality of long distance call is very poor (consistently poor). Complained to the company, but still no easy solution. Hope it helps.

With 12 years experience of Cablecom's internet supply I would say that speed is never an issue. Service and constant supply are another matter, but I have found their speed to be 100% (and more) of what they offer:

This is for their 25Mb package. The phone too I have no complains of quality, only loss of service...

Re: Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

Cablecom does not have any offices in Lausanne (and other areas too).
So, how do you usually approach them? Through phone or their online contact form? Do they come to your place to sign the contract?

I'm asking because I do not know the procedures that are usually followed for an ISP that does not have a local office in your city.

Cablecom is indeed VERY expensive. 25 CHF just for the phone-line tax (without phone) + 35 CHF for the mini package.
And there's something weird about them. I visited a Swisscom's office and the "mini" package there was for 1 Mbps and not 2 Mbps, as listed on their site. And their employee not that pleasant at all.

Citycable on the other hand does not cover me. Damn.
