Re: Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

That sounds good to me. It seems a bit more stable than before then but even then it wasn't bad at all.

I was looking at Fibre 75 but am tempted to get Fibre 35 to start with and wait a few months in case they increase it's speed.

In the worst case I could still upgrade to 75 if they don't increase it in the next few months I assume.

The only question is when I do this would I need to get a new modem as I heard there are two one for slower connections and one for higher speeds (docsis 3 vesus 2 I think) or is it the same modem for 35 and 75?

Re: Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

Is there a decent and up to date summary anywhere?
Comparis is pretty crap for this one- doesn't show you whats available in your area and shows the wrong prices.

you can try this site:

http://www.tempobox.ch/en/index.htm

Always best to also check directly on the various websites, as prices change from time to time, plus often can find special offers.

Re: Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

Thanks.

Why is it some companies (cablecom....) aren't available to my apartment but others are?
Surely if the wires are there they are there? Or is there something odd with the way things work here?

I mean... In the uk it's normal that the faster speed products may not be available but rather odd that one company is allowed but not another

Re: Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

Reading through threads on here I come across a few tales of people moving into a new place and then recieving bills for a internet connection in their apartment that the previous tenant didn't close, or of some part of the connection being included in the utility fees for an apartment....
Is there anyway (except for asking the landlord and hoping for the best) to find out if anything like this exists in your apartment?

I find it very hard to believe that any company can force you to pay something that you don't have a signed contract for. Checking with the landlord and your rental contract sounds like a good way forward if you are worried, and of course, not even try to see if there is a working internet connection in your apartment which you haven't ordered. But even if you do try it, use it and then get a bill, I would again guess that it would be hard for them to win the argument without a contract (but they would indeed try to make it hard for you since you used the service).

My recommendation is to be persistent, and fight your cause if it is worth fighting. It took me more than 6 months and countless of registered letters and phone calls to finally get Cablecom to give up. It felt good, but almost not worth the pain to win.

It totally depends on what you need and want. And some areas has different possibilities. You can start by looking at comparis.ch

If you are using wireless, you won't get much more than 30mbps anyway. Check your speed at speedtest.net - or the app. My 250 Cablcom service gives this with data able, but much less wirelessly - here's my iPad:

Re: Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

Hi,

the problem is not the large downloads, the problem is the response time on all the small requests, the 4g on my phone is quicker than using the wifi sitting 5 meters from the router, and i am not using the UPC wifi router.

just opening ex 20min.ch is slow, but downloading a 600mb iso from ubunto is not problem

Latency gets bad in the evening, maybe its just here in Fribourg.

Might be a DNS issue; I changed mine (in my Horizon box) to the google DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

But until you have a number of speed test results, you can't compare how websites download. This could be the website server load not your system at all...

Re: Internet issues / choices in Switzerland / ADSL vs cable

I have a related question.
I need Internet for my house and my budget is around 40 CHF/month.

Right now, in the meantime, I get the internet from my neighbour (we have an agreement, I pay 30 CHF/month). He uses Swisscom and said he has the super fast 1 GB Swisscom package (
ADSL Cable) and pays more than 100CH but when I did the internet speed test the results are:

Download: 10.49 mbps
Upload: 1.06 mbps

so,...?...not sure about that.

In any case, I mention it ´cause that speed works fine for me at the moment, I just want to have total independence from him ´cause I noticed he is a bit dodgy.

So, i was looking at my options, and I´m confused.

I found a upc-cablecom package called "Internet 20" that offers up to 20 mbit/s download and
up to2 mbit/s upload speed for 45CHF (still ok), which sound good considering I have half that speed now.

Now, i read a loooot of reviews here and in other websites and opinions are very divided about this company (but the sound so good! they even offer free Wifi around Switzerland for their customers!), some reviews here in the forum are from 2011, so I wanted to check with you now, know how is it going and hear about your experiences or any advice, I´m open to any company really, I don´t have any preference. I should just mention that i´m not interested in having any TV service or fixed telephone line or anything like that, only Internet.

I also tried 2 websites someone mentioned here:tempobox.ch and comparis.ch, both very useful, but i´d still like to hear a little from you all. I´ve only be here in Switzerland for less than a year so I still don´t have that many references or experiences with companies locally.

Thank you!

I think the internet speed in Switzerland is quite pitiable. And the max speed depends on where you are. I live in Clarens and Swisscom is not available in my area. I have to go with UPC cablecom and the highest I could get is 3mbps. I am paying 95 CHF per month :/

I subscribed for UPC Cablecom, I forgot which service but it comes with Horizon Box. The max upload/download speed I get is 3MBps. I got TV cable service and a land line, but I don't really need them.

Compared to when I was in the Netherlands, this is expensive and very slow. I used to enjoy 10 MBps there for cheaper price (also with UPC cablecom).

Check your subscription - something is very wrong with your setup and I'm surprised you've not realised.

Is this a wireless speed or by data cable? Wireless I can get a max of 50Mbps on an iPad2 and 80Mbps on an iPad Air 2.

Meanwhile on wired I get a fairly consistent 250Mbps (OK 246), which is what my subscription is:

Have you seen the "free" packages [1] that UPC have on offer? When first introduced I paid 50,- for the modem, and have a 2 Mbit connection on standby if my main provider were to ever drop off. Not amazing speeds, but will ensure that we can continue email/facebook/english forum/etc.
