Apple recycling

Has anyone used Apple's recycling programme in Switzerland (run by Brightstar)? You enter the details online of your old Mac, iPhone, etc, and it offers you a price. If you accept, you send off your item to Brightstar and your bank account is credited.

I was on the point of using it, but I've come across some very bad customer reviews (mainly in the UK) where people have been offered a price and then had it retracted once the item had been received by Brightstar on the grounds that it was damaged, broken, etc.

Anyone have any experience with it?

My suggestion was going to be to dig a hole in the garden and bury it; you'd be rewarded with more apples in time. But then I read your post.

Revendo buys old Macs. I've no idea about the prices.

You will receive an Apple gift card, your bank account will get nothing.

Some people have good deals, others have bad deals. I always wonder how honest a lot of the people with bad deals are when it comes to providing proper info at first.

Depending on the device you might make (much) more money by putting it up on Tutti, Ricardo or EF.

No, in Switzerland it's a cash deposit. I believe in the UK people get vouchers below a certain amount. The obvious answer re an item's condition is to take photos before sending it off.

I asked originally because this is Apple's official recycling site, albeit run by an independent company.

I was going to suggest Cider after first reading the title.

I would put it on EF for a ridiculous price and ROFL when someone really buys it.

I would recommend Revendo. Me and my OH went in to get rid of our iphone 6's to the Zurich branchand they gave us a good price. They can assess what the battery is like as well as the condition of the phone and make you an offer....mine was less than the website quoted but my battery had a high number of charges on it and a couple of minor scratches.

If you agree to the quote they deal with it there and then and you get cash within a day into your bank....nice and easy!

Re: Apple recycling

I used the service last week..

The Apple / Brightstore website gave me a price quote, I ordered the postpaid envelope..

However before it arrived I went to apple store and gave it to them, they took it there and then for same price as quoted online and I got the money off my new phone.. I could have taken the cash of course but obviously i was there to buy a new phone.

My phone was 3 years old and never kept in a protective case, it worked fine but had plenty scuffs and scratches. They just check that all the buttons work and the screen is intact basically.

Edit :: My mute button didn't work but the apple guy spent ten minutes messing with it and got it working so that he could give me the quoted price - else it would have likely been less.

Re: Apple recycling

When my mother handed in her broken 21" iMac (2007-ish, bought early 2008 refurbished) in 2016, she was quoted 0 € (in Germany).

However, after the system was picked up, it seems they credited her 20€ a couple of days later.

The hard drive was broken. I guess everything else was still ok.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, if it were a phone, I'd do that too, but it's an old iMac. I've been quoted CHF85 for it. It's in immaculate, working condition and has all the original packaging, but the OS is not up to date - still on Snow Leopard.

Feedback from a Apple User:

Quote:
Be careful with Brightstar, they're well known for scamming people.

Recently got a quote for $145 for my wife's iPhone 6. Sent it in in full working order (had always been in a case with a screen protector). They tried to send back pictures showing light coming from the edge of the display, as if the glass had been pulled from the screen. They then offered $0 for it.

I refused and told them it wasn't in that shape when shipped to them and they told me to file a claim with UPS. I told them I'd just take them to court. They called and left a message offering the full $145 then but said I first had to accept the $0 amount online and they'd process it manually.

I called back about it and they didn't know anything about the new offer but said if someone told me that then I should do it and they'd note it for their customer support guys. I did it and didn't hear anything for a week or get the card so I called back again. This time they told me that they didn't see anything on it but when I told them the story they "looked into it" and "Oh yeah, now I see that's the case." They then said the card had been emailed the week before. We hadn't received anything so they said it'd be another few days to re-issue it.

Eventually we got the gift card but it took a ton of work and it was clear they were trying to do anything they could to avoid paying and keep the phone.

Check out the reviews of Brightstar. Lots of people have been scammed and had Brightstar keep their device too. Be VERY careful.

Where do you live? I'll give you 100 francs for it if it's in good working order and not too far from Zurich/Aargau.

Yes, I'd read lots of these sort of reviews too. But I sent it off anyway and a few days later got an email confirming receipt of the machine and the amount. Then somewhat surprisingly the CHF 85 arrived in my bank account end of last week.

I must say I didn't think I'd get anything for a 2008 iMac, so I'm quite pleased

I have a G4 mac from 1999 sitting behind my regular Mac. I still fire it up on occasions as it has an old version of Photoshop that I need to open some old files I still need on rare occasions. It runs Mac OS9. Anybody remember that?

I still have a 2002 iBook somewhere. Haven't used it for years though!
