I've already played my hand by signing the UK official secrets act, many moons ago but valid in perpetuity. Apathy reigns.

Were I to be a human rights lawyer / journalist / trades unionist in <insert country of choice> it may be another response to "If you've done nothing wrong you've nothing to fear"...
I don't even know what "the official secrets act" is, or what relevance it has to the topic in hand.

Are you trying to hint that you're a spy or something?

James Bond is alive and well and organising drinks at the Tallaker...

Shh, don‘t tell anyone.

Ftw there are loads of spies here but we don‘t all get to drive Astons into secret lairs behind Coop. Sad. Still, watch that China video; it‘s er, terrifying.

And the "we only use it when needed" is oh so reassuring, innit?

I wasn't planning on going to China anytime soon, but I'm sure all you globetrotters ought to be careful.

No you don't. I read amazon e-books on my Sony. There's ways ....
Likewise I read Amazon books on iPads and Macs. Amazon have a Kindle app for a variety of platforms.

One snag I have come across is that if you leave it too long between reading sessions, and you cannot get online, Amazon will force you to download the lot again.

Which is a bummer when you find yourself with a broken internet connection and decide to catch up with some reading. You find you can't even do that.

I haven't bought anything from Amazon since they did that to me.

Watch this short video of a BBC journalist in China who was 'captured' within seven minutes of being labelled a suspect.
What does that have to do with a regular citizen?

Quote:
It's not just you anymore, it's everyone in your family, all of your contacts, your neighbours, your colleagues, where you go and what you spend your money on. It's terrifying. I'm sure Amazon won't 'care' but your data is valuable to someone and you're no longer in control of who gets to purchase it. "We will only extract the data when the people need our help" said the friendly Middle Kingdom police officer... "Citizens don't need to worry".
What exactly is terrifying?
Which exact data?
If someone knows what I had purchased, how will they use it "against me" and my "rights and freedom", i.e. impact my life?
"Them" knowing where I traveled? Also don't see any risks.
"Identity theft"? Not sure how often it happens outside of movies.
I have a friend worried about Fitbit having their activity data - why do you then even get a Fitbit?

Note, if I was a "high impact" individual in the world I would probably be concerned.
But I think most of what "common" people are stressing about is for no good reason.
Still waiting for acceptable reasons to become worried and care at all.
I must be blind to them; happy to have my eyes opened - with concrete examples.

Anyway this is pretty off-topic, might be better off in a separate one.

Glenn Greenwald TED talk on why privacy matters.

2014 Article from the Spectator on the casual snooping by the UK Police will not concern you in the slightest.

Why..? What's your email password?

I agree this is way off topic but we should care who we let into our homes.

Those are very different areas of "privacy".
I am willing to trade a certain amount/layer of it for a service which is valuable to me.
I am not willing to give a random person my passwords / apartment keys etc.

This guy is extra anxious and you can see panic in his eyes every second of that video lol.

My opinion is that neither of the two extremes is good.
I simply don't appreciate overly expressed concerns.

By personally handing a person your keys or your password it would be less randomly than what you do by using a service which is valuable to you

No, because from the service point of view the password is encrypted, not stored/handed over as free text.

You misunderstood. What I meant is by personally handing over you would at least know what the person looks like etc.
The info gathered about you by using apps, Echo, FB etc. you have absolutely no idea whom by.

But what ever ..... to each his own.
I'm a bit surprised (or am I?) that people here don't seem to get what Uncle Max is trying to get accross.

That was a faff. But done successfully.

I'd heard it could be done somehow, but I hadn't taken the plunge.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the nudge.

Martin Niemöller: "First they came for the Socialists..."
Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) was a prominent Protestant pastor who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps.

Niemöller is perhaps best remembered for the quotation:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Don't know what you mean, it's dead easy. I got access to the wide range of amazon e-books but chose my own reader.

You're welcome, I'll nudge you anytime
