Presumably you could have amazon.com deliver to a Packet shop in a surrounding country and then collect it yourself and take advantage of the CHF 300 duty free allowance?

Would need some careful analysis of the surrounding country import costs to see if it is worthwhile.

Anyway I am dismayed, I thought Amazon would be a large enough enterprise to handle the Swiss VAT?
There is nothing I buy from Amazon US that would be worth a 2.5 hour trip to the border... it was really just smaller things that were not available or hard to get hold of here that I could get delivered to my house.

So did I. Also makes no sense. Plus they're suggesting we should buy our stuff on Amazon UK - until February when we'll get another mail saying "we regret to inform you that as of March 19" etc etc.
Now just imagine the EU slowly falling apart. Will amazon go into politics?

I have to disappoint you, the EU got actually even better for online shopping thanks to a new anti Geoblocking law that took effect today:

https://www.dw.com/en/how-the-eu-is-...ing/a-46552760

My fav bit is the UK government, who simply always delivers...

The British government has issued a technical note on how it would deal with geoblocking should it fail to reach a Brexit deal with the EU.
It said UK online shoppers wouldn't be protected against discrimination when buying goods or services from companies within the bloc. However, UK traders selling products to customers in the EU would have to comply fully with the regulation.
Not much of a deal, huh?

Aufmerksames Lesen is not everybody's thing.
I did not ponder about how well the EU is organized re online shopping, I was pondering what amazon would do if the EU fell apart again into numerous, little countries.

Ain't it fun to explain spontanious, sarcastic thoughts ....

Its not that I didn't understand your point... I just did not care. I wanted to tell everyone how practical online shopping is in the EU, specifically the people on here who keep on repeating that nothing good ever came from Brussels should hear a bit about the anti-geoblocking law. (and I am typing this on a phone that does not have any roaming charges within the EU by law...)

And yes, I totally enjoyed the jab at the UK on top as it is beyond belief just how bad the May cabinet is running their country...

Re: Why does Amazon shun Switzerland?

Does anyone know if other retailers besides Amazon will stop shipping to Switzerland? A friend mentioned that there was an article in one of the Swiss newspapers (she can't remember which) that stated a lot of companies will stop shipping here as of January.

Has anyone else seen/heard about this?

I assume EU companies will mostly continue as they have systems that cope with multiple versions of MWST.
Non EU (including US) companies mostly do not have such systems so probably only the bigger ones will want to invest in developing such systems.

Many Chinese companies are small so will not reach the financial threshold required to register for Swiss MWST. If they do get so large then likely they would just found a new company and continue selling online without Swiss MWST.

Not if they just stop selling to Swiss customers, as Amazon decided to do.

Seems like the Swiss post deal with Amazon has taken effect. Ordered a garage door motor from Amazon.de, not only are they shipping it to Switzerland, I got a discount with my German Amazon Prime subscription and two-day delivery is only 9.95 for the whole thing.

They sent it via FedEx Europe and they're handing it over to the Swiss post for customs declaration and delivery.

when a packet dissapears and no tracking number then its a big problem
For the seller/sender - not the recipient/buyer. The onus is on them to prove the parcel was delivered correctly.

Sellers who send out stuff using untracked methods bear the cost of lost/stolen parcels. It is probably factored into the cost of doing business.
Untracked methods are likely to be more economical and so the money saved on the method of sending will be more than the amount of money lost on orders that don't reach their destination.
