Is a home phone necessary?

Hi.

We haven't had a home phone for years as it was redundant these days with our mobiles. Is it necessary in Switzerland? Is it culturally expected or necessary due to cell phone issues in the concrete block apartments?

Thanks

Dan

No

Haven´t had a landline for years. Just check your cell phone contract if it covers all you want to do

Re: Is a home phone necessary?

And another no.

Worst case you could use an IP (e.g. Skype) phone. You can even buy a dedicated phone number, and as long as you have an internet connection you can receive calls.

I live in a block but do have a mobile phone signal. I also have a Skype number I give as a "landline"

I think it's now well "accepted" to not have a landline anymore. I've dropped mine last year, not looking back at all.

Do you have children?

Our kids call and receive phone calls from their friends on our landline. I wouldn't want them calling their friends' parents on their mobile numbers to schedule playdates or ask about homework.

Re: Is a home phone necessary?

I know of no-one amongst my friends and acquaintences who doesn't have a fixline phone. Obviously it's a generation thing. I still prefer to use the fixline, and, as it seems, does everyone else I know.
There is one thing though which I notice time and time again. As most people, not of my generation, today have their phones in easy reach any younger caller expects the phone to be answered within seconds.
So it happens that when the fixphone rings and by the time I have put down what I'm doing, stood up, walked to the phone and picked it up - the call has been ended. Clearly under the impression there is no-one at home.

Easily avoidable.

Re: Is a home phone necessary?

Funnily, we only gave up our landline last week. It's been sat in the basement office since we moved last year and we never use it. The only calls we were getting were from call centres and various cold calls. With that and a slight alteration of our Swisscom TV package, we're saving 24 chuffs per month.

Probably generational - personally I could not imagine not having a landline

if the children are under the age of 16, then they're probably more likely to be snapchatting than calling on landlines

Re: Is a home phone necessary?

We have one and rarely use it, but it was free with our Cablecom contract in Zürich and call to premium number (like thier bloody help desk IIRC) and calls outside CH had a cost, in CH was also free. Now we are in Zug and its the same gig with WWZ. So if it comes a free in a bundle with TV and Internet ok, would I have one if I had to pay for it... nope.

Re: Is a home phone necessary?

We have one because it comes in a package with TV and internet.
The package with the phone is cheaper than if we had the one with just TV and internet so no reason not to have it really.

It barely gets used and mostly my elderly relatives back in the UK who seem to prefer landline numbers.

How old do you think a child should be before they have a smart phone?

Re: Is a home phone necessary?

For me? Absolutely. I can't call my mom using the mobile, as the prices to call outside Switzerland are absurd.

And my mom doesn't have, nor is willing to start using, technology that allows things like Skype or WhatsAPP.

Very happy with my land line...

You can call landline numbers with Skype?

In the end that comes cheaper (for me) than to have a landline installed with a monthly fee etc

Is not necessary but why shouldn't you have it? As someone else mentioned, if you have small kids they'll call their friends etc. Or older relatives will call you..
