Re: Recommended phone models for daughter

A basic brick that she can use to call you in emergencies and text her friends. Prepaid, to avoid ridiculous charges.

And no 13-year old needs a phone that costs 1000 CHF.

Re: Recommended phone models for daughter

Her friends in school have these.
Any specific brand model which teenagers in CH use?
I'm guessing Apple?

I would get the cheapest Android with prepaid, which she can top up out of pocket money.

Not the iPhone 8 or iPhone X?
Our family uses Apple so preferably I would buy an Apple

the price range is a bit strange. it is too much money but not enough for an iPhone X.

Hi..... my daughter goes to the Isb. Most of the teenagers here use Apple iPhones. IPhone 7/8, some have the X. If you want her to be the odd one out, then buy a cheap Android.

Re: Recommended phone models for daughter

It is sad that worthiness at ISB seems to be based on who has a particular model of smartphone. Seems to be some shallow people attend there.

My son will get an expensive phone when he can buy his own. He keeps badgering us for a phone - he might get my old S4 if he is able to prove he is able to be responsible. But I’m not having him glued day in, day out to a screen - tablet, phone, computer whatever.

I’m glad that he reads a lot of books and does other non-screen stuff. And that is coming from me, an IT engineer.

Re: Recommended phone models for daughter

Can you go to the Apple store with her and let her try which one fits her best?

I could imagine that the iPhone SE would be better suited for her (presumably - I know it's a bit of a cliché) small-ish hands.

There's rumors of the SE getting an update in Spring.

The current SE should receive patches and iOS upgrades for another two years.

By then, you can buy another phone, maybe the updated SE or something else.

It does have TouchID and Apple Pay, but not 3d touch and no FaceID and of course the camera is "worse" than the one in the X and 8.

It uses the same CPU and GPU as the 6S, but has a smaller display. As such, it uses less battery and lasts longer and is also faster (less pixels to move).

Apple allows you to share Apps and other iTunes purchases throughout the family, with no additional costs. So, if the whole family already uses iOS devices...
Additionally, parental controls in iOS are very powerful.

Also, please teach her to use social networks responsibly.

Re: Recommended phone models for daughter

Apple products are among the most common, but any top-tier android is also common nowadays. Maybe at ISB kids are richer so prefer iphones. If you are using apple in the house it's a plus for connectivity, sharing stuff and all that. The important thing is that you yourself know how to use it so that you can manage parental control stuff should you want to.

An iPhone SE is all I would buy my kid at that age. 1000chf is ridiculous, an iPhone X is ridiculous, and by doing that you are just encouraging shallowness and entitlement. I would even go as far as to say it is not good parenting.

During last year's Panto there were a few iSB kids. Not all of them were iThing junkies. They also didn't strike me as the kind of people who valued conformity - they seemed pretty decent. But then, I was dealing with intelligent, creative and talented kids. They didn't all have iPhones.

I know for sure that not all the 13 year olds at ISB have iPhones, and I also know for sure that of those that do, they do not all have the latest model, and certainly not models costing 1000CHF.

If your daughter is reasonably independently minded, get her a Sony Xperia. Good phones. Robust as well. Don't forget to make sure it's insured, for when she drops it, forgets it, or it gets stolen.

Just the ones whose parents make an issue of it.

To be fair, when the Gameboy Advanced came out, I made sure my son was one of the first to get one. Sometimes it's fun to give your kid the best toy in school. But then, I'm a bad parent.

Uurgh. A 1000 francs? What a pitiful budget.

It won't even buy a fifth of a Vertu Constellation.

Commoners!
