Phone scam dog buying

Hello all

I recently received a rather unsettling call. It came from a number i didn't recognise which I initially ignored but then rather stupidly answered the second time.

He basically said his name and he was from my neighbourhood and that he has seen me walking my dog and he is really cute and how much would i sell it for.

Now i assume this is just some scam/phone spam cold call but given i have a dog and often walk him around it is a little unnerving. He gave no specifics and I hung up and blocked the number but i wanted to check if anyone had heard of something similar?

Thanks

So how did he get your number, what language was he speaking and did he know what breed of dog it is? Just seems a bit of a strange scam to me.

And welcome to the forum BTW!

Thanks for the welcome!

He spoke English. Stated a name. He had a strong non Swiss accent. He didnt mention any specifics but to be honest when i asked how he got the number he just repeated he likes the dog. I panicked a little to be honest and hung up. Tried calling back and the number is not working or my number is blocked. A neighbour suggested the police should be told but i am not sure i want to take up police time with this.

If it is a scam i assume it would be along the lines of me agreeing then giving some type of personal details, address or bank info etc. Agree it's very strange

Re: Phone scam dog buying

I wonder if this might be a variation of the scheme where someone calls pretending to do a survey and asks if there is a dog in the house. It is thought that the fake survey is a way of 'casing' a house to determine if burglary is worth while.

https://www.volksfreund.de/region/tr...er_aid-6615940

http://www.tagblatt.ch/ostschweiz/Ha...art192,1691058

(Difference between Germany and Switzerland: The German police recommend you report these calls, the Swiss police don't believe it's a thief, because 'thieves know that a dog owner takes the dog with him when he leaves the house'. Srsly? )

---

Are you friendly with local dog walkers, do you belong to a Hundeverein, a Hundeschule? If so, tell other Swiss dog owners in your neighborhood this story, ask for their reactions, ask if they think there is some nefarious intent. If they recommend calling the police, do so.

If your neighbor who suggested going to the police is Swiss, perhaps following her suggestion is a good idea.

---

Even if the guy legitimately admired your dog - this is weird. No one with good intentions asks to buy another person's dog. (Aside from fellow farmers eyeing your working border collie as he moves a herd of sheep, that is...) Going to the trouble of looking up your contact details is weird.

---

Were it me, suspicious as I am of everyone when it comes to the wellbeing of my mutts, I would keep my dog firmly on lead when out and about.

My answer: The two Rottweilers and the bull mastiff are not for sale, and I always keep them slightly underfed.

Yes its seems like its a landline but no negative feedback. Funnily enough changing the last digit and it is a negatively reported aggressive telemarketing type number.

The area code was Zurich but i know there is plenty of ways to make it look like its a local call when it could be from anywhere.

Thanks for the response and suggestions. I have raised it with a few people in the neighbourhood who agree its odd. I just don't see a way he could have legitimately got my mobile number if he was really interested in my dog. I am leaning more to it being a scam which i can live with.

If it is some oddball who really thinks its appropriate to cold call me after somehow finding my details to see if he can buy my dog then that's a lot more unsettling. I might go to the police to at least file a report. They could laugh me out of the police station but aside from that there is no downside.

I got one of those calls a couple of weeks ago. I only answered to get rid of them.

- 0033 loooongnumber

- male voice with Indian accent very similar to that of the Windows scam calls

- asked if this was Mr. Name. He did have the name right which bothered me, but I just answered "What's it about.

- Cat, dog, hung up

If I answer, I have tried various unfriendly responses, then blocked the number. Eventually they call again, same voice, from another number. Same number type called yesterday, didn't answer, bloody nuisance.

Let's say it IS someone who's been watching you and your dog.

Do you walk your dog at regular times? If so, get more random about it

Re: Phone scam dog buying

Phone Rings

Bad Guy : "I'd like to buy your dog"

Gullible Victim : "I'm thinking of selling him. He'd be about 4000 CHF. Lord Puglington Pugface III is a champion show dog, doncha know."

BG : "Excellent. I think that's a good price for such a lovely dog. Can I come round to see him properly?"

GV : "Sure, I live at Mopsstrasse 12. I'm at work during the day, but home from about 18:30."

BG : "Awesome. See you next Tuesday"

Monday Evening - Phone Rings

BG : "Sorry, I'm not going to be able to make it tomorrow. And I don't think I'll be able to buy little Pugface after all. I'm utterly heartbroken, but you know, life..."

GV : "No worries. The folks on English Forum gave me a load of stick for wanting to sell him anyway"

A few day later. GV arrives home.

GV : "Pugface, I'm home!"

PF : "..."

GV : "Pugface! Where are you?"

PF : "..."

GV : "Pugface?"

PF : "..."

GV : "Oh dear. He seems to have been stolen..."

I recently got a similar phone call and since I was in the market for a pet, I decided to go for it. The kind gentleman sold me a poodle and I decided to name him spike, after my favorite uncle. Here's a pic:

Isn't he the cutest Thing ever? The reputable breeder reassured me, that his hair will start growing in a matter of weeks.

It might be a phone prank (prank call?), somebody who knows you is laughing a bit....do you have or know any kids? Actually, they enjoy making fun of random people.
Something along the line
https://www.marcophono.com

I wouldn't worry that much. Burglars can't be bothered to check if there's a dog or not.

Re: Phone scam dog buying

Hi,

A friend of mine has also been receiving missed calls, around the same dates as you posted this.

They live in Zürich, finally picked up the phone to them last night and it was an Indian bloke as well. Asked to buy their cute dog off them for 500 CHF then threatened to steal it if they didn’t pay up. They hung up, called the police but were told they couldn’t trace the call. The friend thinks it could be someone in their area and is understandably quite freaked out about it. They are going to file a report later.

Can you PM me the number they called you from, please, then I can tell you if it’s the same one. Tried ringing it and it’s blocked. Do let me know if anything else happens. I’ve let other dog owners in Zürich know about it via social media. I suggest other people do, too.

Thanks and good luck.

Re: Phone scam dog buying

The number that called me was 0033882688599 which I'll bet doesn't exist.

My hit is this dog ransom scam will not likely get physical, rather they will try to twist you into some payment situation from remote, just like the Windows scammers. They prey on fear, doubt and naivety, so I would just ask them questions and give them nothing or some mumble.

I just got a hang up call from 044 523 65 48 which was probably the same creep. I think it is good to keep the police informed, but more than likely the scammers feel pretty safe from their remote location.
