Sky TV going fully online

Sky is dropping satellite dishes - UK either later this year or in 2019. Might be a good move if the geoblocking is lifted or a bad one with many "customers" in Europe locked out.

http://www.bbc.com/news/business-42815603

Also how to cope with slow download speeds? Ours simply isn't fast enough to watch telly with I don't think.

Re: Sky TV going fully online

It will probably open up the Uk market but close overseas market unfortunately. If it can be used overseas, I'll be definitely getting the Sky Q box and ditching my swisscom TV pkg.

Re: Sky TV going fully online

Well, theoretically if geoblocking is removed that should mean you can get it in other countries: Now TV at least.

"A new USB stick will allow customers to watch Now TV content on any television - including EU countries when an expected change to "geoblocking" rules comes into effect this summer."

Unfortunately Now TV doesn't show what I want to watch so it'll have to be Sky or nothing.

I imagine they will still have the dish option for people who don't have high speed internet.

One of the reasons of doing this is to cut costs, if they do not take the service for the dishes down there is only an increase in costs. So I would expect them to stop supporting this.

They may do, but not from one day to the next. There will undoubtedly be an option for people who don't have high speed internet at their house, or an option for people living in remote part of Scotland that will include a dish.

Re: Sky TV going fully online

Well now TV is easy to stream here and internet like speeds are also very good and so these seems a step forward. I just hope that the prices do not massively increase.

All the best

I wonder if we'll see UK channels disappear from the Swiss providers (and Zattoo). AIUI, they're only permitted to re-broadcast them because they're currently available to receive in Switzerland. If there's no FTA over satellite, then what'll happen?

Re: Sky TV going fully online

Completely misleading headline. If you read on:

Quote:
Sky is not proposing to stop broadcasting by satellite. The move will allow customers who cannot have a dish or do not want one to get Sky, a spokesperson said. A Sky box will still be required.

Re: Sky TV going fully online

I wondered if anyone knew of an easy-ish way to watch the SKY F1 coverage in Switzerland? Tired of waiting for the Channel 4 highlights each time.

Also if anyone knows of a way to watch Formula E in English, that would also be great, just not the same with German commentary.

British Eurosport covers the Formula E series live on their Euro 2 channel. And you can watch live in Bern on the 22nd June.

Re: Sky TV going fully online

Hi,

with now tv you can get a sports pass that allows you to watch it and sometimes they show the race and qualifying on Sky1 and so you see it using the entertainment pass which is cheaper. Also you subscribe to f1 pro and watch the race live https://www.formula1.com/en/subscrib...Q&gclsrc=ds#en I just watch the race on rtl, orf or sf2. If I want an english commentary I just watch the tv for the pictures and via TuneIn list to the radio 5 commentary.

Have fun
Martin

Re: Sky TV going fully online

If you read the actual EU regulation you will see:

REGULATION (EU) 2018/302
WHAT GOODS AND SERVICES DOES THE REGULATION COVER?
The regulation sets out rules on geo-blocking in respect of three categories of
goods and services:
physical goods;
electronically supplied services (such as cloud services or website hosting);
and the sale of services provided in a specific physical location (such as rental of summer accommodation, concert tickets and car hire).

Controversially, the regulation does not cover any forms of digital media, such as music and video streaming services, despite geo-blocking being a common concern in this area. The inclusion of such material within the regulation's scope was vetoed by member states due to concerns over copyright.

Sorry, buy I really doubt Sky will be not be geoblocked...

PS: "This regulation does not apply to Switzerland"... Oh well...

We get Channel 4 in HD from our local provider. Channel 4 do not broadcast in HD on satellite. So they must have a different solution in place.

Not on Freesat though.

Not sure why it would be on Sky in HD as it would use the same feed (or you would assume so). The reason it was pulled is because of escalating costs. So unless Sky are paying for a HD feed, then it should not exist.
