Best prepaid SIM cards?

Hello all!

I’m an American who will be living in Geneva until June.

I’ve been reading on the forums here about Lycamobile and other networks. Which do you recommend for someone who wants a GB or two of data every month?

I plan on traveling across the border to other parts of Europe, so I need a plan that works decently across anywhere in the EU.

Could someone provide a little hierarchy of mobile plans?

Thanks so much.

Re: Best prepaid SIM cards?

After few years with different providers, I must agreed with above, Lyca...
Paying 39 chf per month, works perfectly here and other places in Europe.

What would you recommend just for a couple of MB/month data throughout Europe to use for car traffic data?

Re: Best prepaid SIM cards?

I just learned about a new offer (you must confirm) of 59chf month, this plan provides you with data roaming in Europe.

59/month is quite a lot for traffic data... I really only need very few megs...

Clearly Yallo.
Good prices, good network (Sunrise).
And prepaid roaming options are efficient too.

Re: Best prepaid SIM cards?

Lebara mobile is pretty good especially if you travel in the mean time. I have also been told they have an abo at the moment (all inclusive at 29.95 with not contractual obligation) though I cant be sure if this applies to new customers.

lyca swiss doesnt have free roaming in EU. get a separate lyca french for roaming use, and pay like 10eur for 3gb of data usable in all EU

Re: Best prepaid SIM cards?

I am a massive fan of Lyca. Sure, their customer service is terrible (as in, non-existent), but their prices are top notch. As with Lebara, the key is to NEVER use data when you don't have a package... Keep an eye on renewal dates and make sure you have money inside ready for renewal, otherwise you start paying per MB and 50 chf is gone in a couple of days (or hours, if you're a big data user).

I don't use it outside of Switzerland though, for that I find that other EU cards are cheaper, especially since roaming charges were slashed for the EU last June.

I think idiosyncratic might be a better word

Email seems not to be an effective way to communicate with them. Calling seems to work better. It did take me a week to get a bundle activated but I'm not sure the experience is much worse than calling Swisscom where I seem to have wasted a lot of hours since coming to Switzerland.

Re: Best prepaid SIM cards?

Whatever you do, don't use LycaMobile. It is a terrible company. I purchased a SIM card from a local shop in Zurich, and was notified by Text immediately to top up and grab a bundle. I went back to my apartment, and through lycamobile.ch, I purchased a data bundle and topped up with phone minutes. I received three emails confirming these purchases, as well as confirming my contact info. None of this got into their system, and my phone couldn't be reached, nor could it make calls. Internet didn't work.

I tried calling several numbers, but they were in German. I searching online for a US 800 number, but had to wait for the call center to open up (eastern time zone, US). Then I was told they couldn't help me because they cover the US only. So I called via Skype to the numers they referred me to. Neither one worked.

So, I called the numbers provided with my sim card. I had to wait for business hours in Switzerland. Finally called, asked for english, and was directed to a phone tree that was in German. I hit 000000, and was hung up on. Called again, was directed to a phone tree in German, so I hit 2. I finally was sent to someone who spoke english, but the determined that I needed to hit a button combination plus an 8 digit pin that was in my email to activate. I didn't hve an 8 digit PIN in my email. Then, I ran out of Skype minutes and was hung up on. I paid another $5 and called again, where I got someone else who told me that they only showed a CHF 10 credit that I already burned through (???okay?) and that I needed to EMAIL my bank statements and email confirmations to lycamobile in order to confirm who I was, and they would send me my 8 digit PIN, and this could take up to 48 hours. I offered multiple times to read him the transaction confirmation numbers in m emails, but he said he couldn't check for it, and to just email. I asked to be escalated, since it had already been a week. He refused and put me on hold multiple times without warning. He was the most indignant, egotistical customers service rep I have ever talked to. With all the delays, I ran out of skype minutes. After having invested $20 in the SIM card, $70 in a plan that I never got to use, plus $10 in Skype credit, this has been a nightmare. Save yourself the trouble. Last year, I got Lebara at the convenience shop in the SwissAir luggage terminal, with the help of someone there, I had absolutely no problems. Unfortunately, when I arrived there was no one operating the desk.
