Re: Symmetric 10Gbps Internet

Even tho 10Gbps for a home is ridiculous and way above what would be needed, the offer is great.

Can only hope it will last till the end of the year, since they just put in the cables in the street this week, and the cables to and in the buildings will take some more months. Lets see what the competition does in the meantime

Oh yes, I also just looked at what all is included. I cannot think of a single person in Switzerland who does not want this.

Re: Symmetric 10Gbps Internet

Can anyone find the terms and conditions for this offer? The minimum contract period and auto renew term plus cancellation notice would interesting to read.

Speed guarantee or minimum speed expected would also be interesting to know if any of those actually exist.

Thanks

Edit: found the answer to some of my questions (minimum contract period and cancellation notice) here: https://fiber.salt.ch/en/support-en/#FNP

Salt does not guarantee a minimum speed.

No minimum period, Contracts can be terminated with 60 days’ notice to the end of a calendar month Termination fees apply: Maximum amount of CHF 198 in case of termination during the first month. Thereafter termination fee is decreasing by CHF 6 per month. No termination fees are due after 33 months, and due to this there is no auto renew.

Activation fee is 99,95

Sounds all good to me, and even if the max speed would be 10% the deal is still good.

Re: Symmetric 10Gbps Internet

I have read that these claimed theoretical speeds of 10GBbps are essentially BS... speeds are in the end equivalent to 1GBbs. Until I see hard figures there is no way I would trust switching to these low-cost packages which will also likely suffer from high congestion.

10Gbps ethernet (wired data transfer) is only recently establishing a presence and is not yet even "mainstream" inside peoples homes, and we are supposed to believe that they can deliver internet at that speed?

Needless to say, unless you have a 10Gbps ethernet setup in your home, or have 10Gbps wireless (which, umm, doesn't really exist in any practical sense) then you will not benefit from this speed anyway even if it were true.

For me it is pure marketing spiel until proven otherwise.

I took that Sunrise offer and ended up switching back to Fiber7 after a 3-day outage on my day of activation.

I get in the region of ~7.6 Gb/s on my Salt 10Gb fibre connection. That's the maximum throughput of the Ethernet adaptor I tested so theoretically I could have a true 10Gb connection but I'm unable to test this.

While you are correct that no one device in my house can utilise the 10Gb connection it's nice to be able to have up to 10 devices using up to 1Gb simultaneously for example.

It's massively surplus to my requirements but I do get a bit of a kick about how little I pay for such a fast connection

maybe that's his 10Gb/s ethernet card....

I haven't been able to go over 4.5 Gb/s on ookla (10Gb/s card yeah...)
That's still massive as most sites where I download from are caped at 100MB/s or 150MB/s. Not the torrents though....

The single best thing for me with the Salt Fiber is the fixed Public IPv4 IP. Just fantastic. At least until they get their mobile network to IPv6, then probably change to 5G

Re: Symmetric 10Gbps Internet

Hello,

Some information:

-test only with salt.speednet.net, most of the other servers are not able to handle the 10Gb speed tests

-even better take the app, not in browser test, I have seen much better results with the app

- the anti-virus is killing the speed, have tested with and without, it's night and day

- the cheap Asus XG-C100C is not very good and heat a lot

- I do have a Sonnet external card and I'm at 8000/8000

-test speed is more accurate with Iperf3

Cheers

Re: Symmetric 10Gbps Internet

I also think 10gb speed is a bit meaningless. It also depends on the speed of the site you are looking at / downloading from. I'm not a technical person so my explanation might be a bot awry, but if you're downloading from say a South African Website whose servers are only capable of 10mb, you'll still be waiting a long time. Not only that, but your computer has to be up to the task as well. I have 1gb at home and in my South African home my speed is just 5mb/sec. This means i have to start my Windows / office etc updates as soon as I turn my computer on, and wait about 10 hours for them to complete!!
