Re: Salt Fiber Box

Yay received my fibre box and apple tv today.

Boo in not activated yet 😆😩😩
Strange as I am getting an internet connection but I can't login to the fibre box. My username isn't accepted in the salt app either.

Guess I need to be patient 🙈🙏

Did you use the username/password in the manual to log into the box? You can't use your salt login. it's a standard.. can't remember what it is right now though.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Everything is working well. So much better than upc. I wasn't optimistic reading some of the comments here, but got me the service went smoothly and I love it.

Despise the upc box and the service you get.

Port Forwarding Help!

I'm trying now for the fourth day to forward some ports, but nothing seems to work

Here the settings in my fiber box:
Port Mapping:

The same is not working also for the ports 5000 and 5001 of my Synology NAS

I did a "IP Address Reservation" (=fix local IP Address) for this pc with this Address and port it works.

When I try to access it with my public IP it does not work.
I called the support and they told me they cannot and will not help me.

Can someone help me here?

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Hi,

has anyone experience of Fiber 7? It looks interesting but again the weakness seems to be the delivery of tv channels. Why can't they provide a roku, amazon fire or android tv app. Use of Apple tv or vlc is a real nuissance. I watch tv programmes on a tv and not a computer.

Thanks

Martin

I use a Kodi box to watch TV. There is an addon called simpleIPTV client which is able to receive TV from Fiber7.

Overall, I am satisfied with the service. I have not experienced any downtimes till now.

You're not the first person I hear with that issue... though the other person had an issue with their DMZ and the port forwarding was the solution.

Would suggest telling salt that their service is broken, and you will be asking for money back... that usually motivates teams to respond.

I think I might know what the issue is:

port forwarding IS working. Just not from inside your own LAN.

Which means that any machine inside your house connected to the salt box cannot connect to the NAS, but your phone in 4G should not have an issue.

Could you please try this out? (i'm having the issue anyhow)

I have to say my fiber7 --> Salt transition wen butter smooth. Deactivation of fiber7 at 10 AM activation of SALT at 19:00 the same day even though I was advised it could last 2 or 3 days. So pretty cool.

My transfer rates increased a lot but i guess that is due to the router I had that couldn't keep up with the speed, in bridge mode i also had 1GBIT transfer speeds.

I'm just waiting for 2 things from the salt box now:

Fix the LAN access when port forwarding is enabled, and get an OpenVPN server in that box.

Than I'm a happy customer.

greets

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Fiber 7 used to be good. But now they are shit. I am paying for the 1Gbit connection. But now I only get 520 Mbp/s on download and 500+ Mbp/s on upload.

I've emailed Fiber7 to complain they don't even reply.

What is your hardware (router)?

Are you sure that is not the limiting factor?

You can just buy an android TV pretty much anywhere from 50 to 250 depending on your needs.

I fail to see why appletv is a nuisance compared to an android box

Cheers

Re: Salt Fiber Box

I forgot to update my status.

I previously said that I had no internet access even though the router said it was connected. I had called the hotline on Friday, where they said they opened a support ticket with their technical department. The next Monday I got a mail stating that the ticked had been opened and on Tuesday a specialist called me and we scheduled an appointment for the same day. He came and tested the fiber line and found no issues, re-plugged in the fiber plug in the router and immediately solved the problem . So shame on me for not checking that but props to them for finding the problem so quickly.

Anyways, I had to buy a 10Gb/s card to check the effective maximal speed and got myself an ASUS XG-C100C for about 100.- on digitec.
With a multithreaded download manager I can get close to 250MB/s (2 Gbit/s) on certain hosts in the real world (such as Google drive or Steam).
Speedtest shows between 2500 and 3000 MBit/s for both down and upload depending on server and time of day (haven't tested much). Ping is almost always spot-on at 7-8ms (but that also depends on the server obviously):

Strangely enough, I can't get to surpass ~12MB/s on real-world uploads (100MBit/s?) anyone else with the same problem?

All in all, very pleased with Salt. Only complaint so far is the very poor integrated Wifi access point. With both phone and laptop, I can't seem to maintain a constant connection without constantly dropping.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

So today I called UPC to cancel - and got dragged into a conversation with their retention team...

First they started with salt bashing - "but you're aware of the contention ratio?", "you won't get 10gb/s", "salt support is bad"...

(Yes, but UPC has a contention ratio as well, pathetic upload speeds, and support is non-existent).

Then came the "we can lower the price" - and apparently, on Monday UPC is coming out with new package prices to rival Salt's offer...

It's good to see competition is promoting a bit of efficiency in the marketplace!

M.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

I didn't want to make a new post but I can't manage to edit my previous one...

Just wanted to say that I had incorrectly installed the card in a 1x slot, and putting it into a 4x slot gives it more room to breathe reaching download speeds of ~4.7Gbit/s. So depending on the area, time of day and server, the "promised" 10Gbit/s could actually be achievable by some.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Has anyone successfully used their own router with their new SALT Fiber connection?

I am tempted to sign up but wanted to use Ubiquiti Router with POE and add a Unifi AC AP for a better WIFI coverage.

Thanks

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Salt uses the XGS-PON technology. There might be a chance if your router support this technology. Check out this article:

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Hi,

in answer to the person who asked what was my problem with an Apple tv box rather than using an Android box it is very simple I upgraded off Apple products a few years ago and I don't want another Apple device on my network. Also I don't have any need for itunes or Apple music. I already have better streaming options and so I want to use those devicess. The Apple tv does not even have a digital audio output and we have more than one tv and the Apple tv box is massive over priced even you get one included in your Salt Fiber offer.

Thanks
Martin
