Re: Salt Fiber Box

Hi everybody, I am thinking of changing my connection for fiber.
Today I use a 4G connection, I am satisfied apart
from being able to be accessible from the outside. Now, with fiber is there a public IP address?
And is it accessible from the outside? kind VPN connection, SSH

Re: Salt Fiber Box

I currently have a 100/100 symmetric connection from one of the EWZ Zürinet providers for 52 CHF (this one would be 39.95), so it's only the penny pincher in me that wants to switch to Salt (and the geek that NEEDS 10Gbps even if none of my devices are capable to use it above 1G ).

Any previous fiber users here that switched to the Salt Fiber? I don't need the Apple TV and have my wireless setup at home, so I'm actually contemplating to just ask my current provider for more speed and 10-12 CHF off. :-)

Re: Salt Fiber Box

I had the fiber with Swisscom (100/100) and I have switched for the price. I have also my own router behind to handle my network

Speed seems to be correct (tested once, reached 950).

I have changed only for the price (130 by Swisscom vs 40 for Salt).

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Turns out my current provider has a 43 CHF package for 100/100 on the same fiber. It's not exactly 10G, but it might just be OK enough to not swap them over.

I heard many complaints elsewhere on Salt, I'll wait for another month or two to see if this settles before jumping.

Hi Dox,

May I ask you if your could change channel easily with your harmony?
On my side it doesn't work.

If it works on your side, could you tell me which command it is in your harmony setup?
Hi, no.
I typically go back to the initial menu and select a different channel (used with doing that from Kodi).
The directional keys, OK and Menu worked out of the box by selecting the device as Media Center PC - Apple (manufacturer) - Apple TV 4k. I am using the older Logitech Harmony Remote Software (7.7.0) instead of the shiny new one, as the new one was giving me all sorts of trouble.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

I'm all setup and with Ethernet to the Apple TV and I'm getting 943Mbps.

On my phone wifi with 5G I get around 480-500 Mbps

All in all I think it's bloody amazing. I know people have had issue's and they may still get me, but right now I think it's incredible for the money and the Salt TV app is sweet.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Final update from my side, yesterday finished setting up the network.

Apple TV - I'll keep it for now, in parallel with a kodi box and chromecast. One note - to change channels, tap up/down on the touchpad. (Tap, not click; i.e. a light tap). It's a pain in other ways (movies tries to get you to buy movies on iTunes, despite having Netflix installed), and there's no spotify... but for TV it's ok.

Fibre internet works, and having both the 2GHz and 5GHz wireless networks is a nice touch. Faster than UPC, but can't test if I can get the full 10gig as my desktop only has 2x 1gig ports. I could trunk them, find a switch... but at the moment it's just too much hassle. I'm happy with everything "important" having it's own gig pipe.

Port mapping works as well.

VPN is working (have a separate switch & AP that has a VPN tunnel to the UK , plugged into one of the gig ports).

The only thing I haven't tested is the telephone (and am not planning to).

With regards to UPC - they didn't call back as promised for the "special offer". Just goes to show how much they value their customers... One thing to note - the online cancellation form is NON BINDING. So make sure you sent a hardcopy via letter...

I did it via this form.

https://www.upc.ch/en/support/tools/cancellation/

Next they called me back, we agreed on the procedure and ciao.

They mentioned first that I can keep the box for the "free internet".
(This was suspicious, because here nothing is free )
So I called the vervaltung and they told me that I can cancel the cable socket (28 CHF less per month on the rental fee).
After this UPC sent me a letter with a post.ch sticker and with that I was able to send them back the box for free.
Hey mate. UPC said the same to me. Do you mean 28chf off the rental of the apartment?

In the Nebencosten (expenses of the apartment). Your landlord will be charging 28-35CHF per month, buried in the costs (heating, etc) for the cable plug.

If you leave UPC/cable, you cancel that. In some cases they come and put a blanking plate into your apartment. Your landlord then deducts the cost from your nebencosten... making the salt offer even cheaper.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Just to post my experience with transitioning from UPC to Salt Fiber.

As others have noted, the most difficult part was cancelling UPC. After calling them 3 times and visiting one of their shops in person -- no result. Every time they said someone would call me back, but no one did. Eventually, I sent them a registered letter saying I want to cancel and only then they called me. They tried to convince me to stay, I said no, and finally they confirmed the cancellation. That was 10 days ago. Yesterday I received a confirmation letter from them, together with a sticker for returning their equipment by post.

The notice period for UPC is 2 months. Yesterday I ordered Salt fiber and requested an activation date beginning of September -- I will keep using UPC until then, not to pay two providers at the same time. The order was confirmed immediately. I anticipate smooth sailing from here.

Hi
the MC220L is not compatible (and can provide only 1Gbps link anyway)

Salt using XG-PON standard, so you would need a matching transceiver

you can also buy a longer optical cable and lead it to a better place

or buy a good quality 802.11ac wave2 mimo wlan repeater (or gateway) with external antenna
Going to try pulling a long fibre cable through the ethernet conduit in the apartment and have the fibre coming out of the Ethernet hole in the TV room. Would you know what Fibre cable I'd need? Something that works with XG-PON standard? Sorry for the stupid question. I am Googling it :-)

I've heard of people being able to get salt to waive 2 months of fees if you are already paying UPC.

That said, i haven't been able to speak to someone at Salt authoritative enough to make the call... so just bit the bullet and went ahead and got it. The way I see it, I may pay for 2 months more (200chf), but I'll save that in the 4 following months.

No reason to rush. You can also look at it as getting free activation at Salt (100 chf), and getting another bonus of 100 chf to buy yourself or your girlfriend something nice

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Hello Everyone,

This thread has been quite helpful. I too got Salt Fiber installed. Here is my experience so far :

> I moved to a new apartment so planned everything in 6 weeks advance.
> Everything from fiber installation and box dispatch worked smoothly.I could use internet the very first day I moved.
> I was using sunrise WLAN @ 20mbps for 40 CHF, now I am paying the same to Salt for much more including the TV, unlimited calling etc. So more than happy.

I have few question if anyone can help.

> I use Salt TV android app, I do not want to use Apple TV. If I give it to a friend and later when I leave Salt Fiber, how much do I pay salt? 100 CHF? that is way less than the original price of Apple TV 180CHF? Is this correct?

> I will like to use unlimited calling, what is the cheapest handset I can buy? DECT is new to me, does it mean completely wireless like a mobile or there is a base that still needs to be cabled to the modem?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Kushal

This is from the Salt Fiber Support page:

To whom belongs the Apple TV 4k ?
The first Apple TV 4k is included in the offer. It is at your disposal for free, however, it remains the property of Salt.
If you cancel the contract during the 12 first months, you will need to return the Apple TV 4K or pay a fee of CHF 99.95.
You can buy additional Apple TV 4kes for CHF 187.95 each (a maximum of 5).

However, it is not clear if the price is the same after 12 months.

I don't think you will find cheaper than this, if you can wait 2 weeks for delivery:

I am also going to try to run a longer cable, but along a few corners, wall and a door instead of conduit. I'm still waiting for the cables and box to arrive (should be next week for both), so I cannot report on how it went. I suggest looking at getting "bend insensitive" cables, just in case. I ordered two 15m cables (one as a back up) and the cost difference was I think 3 CHF. Normal ones have a min bend radius of 30mm while the insensitive ones are spec'd at 10mm.

According to Salt the specs of the cable are:

LC APC – SC APC Plug
8° Cut
Simplex 9/125µ Singlemode OS2

DECT is a wireless standard that is neither Bluetooth nor Wifi (but good'ole legacy radio tech), and the range is also much better. It still has a base station that is either cabled or wireless. The handset itself is wireless, like a mobile phone (maybe a tad larger).

Hi Thezig,

I've the same problem as you with the fiber connection, since the entry point in my apartment is located behind a wardrobe on the upper floor....and my living room is downstairs.

I saw that you got really good speeds, how did you do that exactly? I'm a bit of a newbie in this sense..I assume you left the Salt box in the hallway (the fiber is the input) and then plugged an Ethernet cable to the LAN hub (output) so that you could connect the TV in a different part of the house. Is that correct?

I was also wondering about the internal wiring of the house...If it wasn't done with Cat5e cables, I will lose a lot of bandwidth when I connect the Salt Box to the LAN hub, correct?

Thanks in advance guys
