I am also going to try to run a longer cable, but along a few corners, wall and a door instead of conduit. I'm still waiting for the cables and box to arrive (should be next week for both), so I cannot report on how it went. I suggest looking at getting "bend insensitive" cables, just in case. I ordered two 15m cables (one as a back up) and the cost difference was I think 3 CHF. Normal ones have a min bend radius of 30mm while the insensitive ones are spec'd at 10mm.

According to Salt the specs of the cable are:

LC APC – SC APC Plug
8° Cut
Simplex 9/125µ Singlemode OS2
Thanks for that. I am trying to find a cable pull so I can run the cable from the hallway into my front room via the tubing, but can't find cable pull anywhere. None on Digitech so trying Jumbo. Any idea's?

Thanks

Larger Coop/Migro/Jumbo Do-its have the plastic ones. Wear gloves, the plastic they're made with causes friction burns just exerting medium pressure. Also get some cable lube, just in case.

Will try later. Salt said they'll give me a longer cable for free. I asked them on Facebook :-)

If you're a real cheapskate you can try an old electrician's trick.

Tie a small rag to the end of some fishing line or string. The rag should fill the tube by about 50%. Stick the rag into one end of the conduit and leave some free fishing line looped on the floor. Tape a hose which will fit into the conduit onto the end of your vacuum cleaner and stick that into the far end of the conduit. Turn the vacuum on and go back to the end of the conduit with the fishing line.

If it hasn't pulled the free line into the conduit, you've got a pull box between you and the far end, find that and relocate the vacuum.

Otherwise, feed it fishing line until you hear the note of the vacuum cleaner change.

Pull a larger pull string/cable in with the fishing line.

This is from the Salt Fiber Support page:

To whom belongs the Apple TV 4k ?
The first Apple TV 4k is included in the offer. It is at your disposal for free, however, it remains the property of Salt.
If you cancel the contract during the 12 first months, you will need to return the Apple TV 4K or pay a fee of CHF 99.95.
You can buy additional Apple TV 4kes for CHF 187.95 each (a maximum of 5).

However, it is not clear if the price is the same after 12 months.
Update : I called Salt fiber customer care to enquire about the ownership of apple TV after the above mentioned12 month period for which you owe them 100CHF. They clearly said, after one year it completely belongs to the user and you do not have to return it. The customer care guy also suggested you can even give it to my friend/family or even sell it.

This is quite nice for someone not interested in apply TV. I just need to find a buyer now anyone interested here ?

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Picked up the cable pull string today. I fully expect it to be no way near as easy as i'd like. :-) :-) The conduit runs down the hallway wall, under the floor into the front room and up again to the socket. Let's see how this goes.

Thanks again for the help. x

Has anyone swapped from Swisscom TV with the 7 day replay feature?
What are your impressions of Salt versus Swisscom?
Does Salt also have 7 day replay of all the uk channels?

TIA

I don't know the exact answer but they are providing 3 month free subscription to Sky sport and Sky show. After that may be normal subscription rates apply?

Just to post my experience with transitioning from UPC to Salt Fiber.

As others have noted, the most difficult part was cancelling UPC. After calling them 3 times and visiting one of their shops in person -- no result. Every time they said someone would call me back, but no one did. Eventually, I sent them a registered letter saying I want to cancel and only then they called me. They tried to convince me to stay, I said no, and finally they confirmed the cancellation. That was 10 days ago. Yesterday I received a confirmation letter from them, together with a sticker for returning their equipment by post.

The notice period for UPC is 2 months. Yesterday I ordered Salt fiber and requested an activation date beginning of September -- I will keep using UPC until then, not to pay two providers at the same time. The order was confirmed immediately. I anticipate smooth sailing from here.
A quick update on my situation.

Even though I requested a delayed activation (beginning of September), Salt completely ignored this and activated the line yesterday. Customer service however promised they will reimburse the Salt bills for July and August when I send them the bills from UPC for the 2 months, proving that I am actually still on notice with them until end of August.

Hi everybody, I am thinking of changing my connection for fiber.
Today I use a 4G connection, I am satisfied apart
from being able to be accessible from the outside. Now, with fiber is there a public IP address?
And is it accessible from the outside? kind VPN connection, SSH
Yes, you get a public address, which is actually a fixed IP address (not dynamic). I'm using VPN and WebDAV to access to my home network. However, for VPN you need a device which works as VPN server on your network (i.e. NAS). The router itself does not have a VPN server function (unlike Fritzbox). You need to configure port forwarding and open the required firewall ports for the type of VPN you want to use.

I currently have a 100/100 symmetric connection from one of the EWZ Zürinet providers for 52 CHF (this one would be 39.95), so it's only the penny pincher in me that wants to switch to Salt (and the geek that NEEDS 10Gbps even if none of my devices are capable to use it above 1G ).

Any previous fiber users here that switched to the Salt Fiber? I don't need the Apple TV and have my wireless setup at home, so I'm actually contemplating to just ask my current provider for more speed and 10-12 CHF off. :-)
Switched over from 1G/1G fiber to Salt Fiber last week. Have my wireless setup at home (ubiquiti), so the reason for changing was price. There is no difference between 1G/1G and 10G/10G because no device on my network supports 10G. However, switching from 100MB/100MB will be really a huge difference. Desired activation day was not achieved by Salt, once activated, everything works flawlessly.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

I would like to share you guys what happened to me with this Salt Fiber offer that looked interesting.

I see a lot of positive comments from people based in Zurich, but the situation is clearly not the same in Geneva.

Indeed, my connection has been activated 2 months ago and it is still not working. The issue is related to the optic line that Salt technicians have installed.

The support is not existent, they have created a ticket 2 months ago and nothing happened from this date. I have followed up with them more than a dozen times, they keep saying that they can't contact the technician that might come to my place (really?), and that I need to wait more time (2 months is not enough apparently).

It is pretty clear that they don't want to send someone and that they don't care.

I have never seen such bad support from any internet provider, even from a communication point of view, they don't give a damn about your problems and are probably laughing out loud.

I have asked to terminate the contract so that I can switch to Sunrise Fiber and they refuse. I am a lawyer so I will force them to do so but no such behavior is clearly not acceptable.

This is actually insane considering that Salt is trying to enter a crowded market, their strategy is basically putting a low price but it comes with NO support in case of problems and more than that, they make fun of your situation.

A colleague of mine went through the same problems, he wants to terminate the contract but Salt is willing to obey. I am going start a joint legal procedure.

One last thing, when the Salt technicians installed the fiber optic line within my flat, they destroyed a wall. They promised that they will come to repair it but they keep postponing it.

To cut a long story short, I you are living in Geneva, DO NOT SUBSCRIBE TO SALT FIBER. You have been warned.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Well, is already 2 months I have the fiber up and working.
Fast overview: I got activated (line working) on the 2nd of June (full price 49chf), Got a SALT mobile line on 5th of July, selected the electronic invoice.
Today I received my first invoice by post mail (even if I selected electronic one).
In the invoice:
- period is from 2nd June (so I didn't paid the full month as expected)
- i got the mobile discount (-10chf/month) even if I didn't have mobile when I applied to fiber, and for both month (again, I got mobile on 5th of July and I didn't tell them anything about it).
- got refunded in the invoice for the 2chf shipping cost

Total invoice for 2 months: 77,95chf.

Never a down, perfectly working. Honestly I couldn't be more pleased about it.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

For those of you who are interested in setting up a 10Gbit LAN easily...

I have scanned the pages of a magazine explaining how to quickly build a cheap 10 Gbit LAN at home, using 10GBASE-SR with SFP+ transceivers.
I won't post them here because it is a paid magazine, but I will send them via private message for those of you who ask for them via private message.

It is very helpful. Not a step by step tutorial, rather a solid explanation of the different technologies and some advices to get the most of your network without spending thousands of chf. It was originally published in april 2017 so except the information about the prices, everything should still be up to date. Everything is in french.
