Re: Salt Fiber Box

Quick TL;DR:

- forget 10GBASE-T: based on RJ45 cables, it's the worst choice according to the article. Expensive hardware, overheating devices.
- Direct Attach: expensive cables, so it's an option to consider if you have short cables (<5 meters). Only for linking 2 peripherals.

- 10GBASE-SR: most efficient solution, based on optic fiber cables, and peripherals equipped with SFP+ connectors. Best price/performance ratio.

Ok but we already have the box with the RJ45, so probably the easiest way is to buy a 100chf 10gbit card (asus) and put a rj45 cable. Should be fine.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Of couse you can, this is the most basic (and hassle-free) set up.
This article is rather for people seeking a complete 10Gbps network with, for instance, network storage and several devices.

Turns out my current provider has a 43 CHF package for 100/100 on the same fiber. It's not exactly 10G, but it might just be OK enough to not swap them over.

I heard many complaints elsewhere on Salt, I'll wait for another month or two to see if this settles before jumping.
@user137: Which service provider do you have? I'm also in Zürinet and I'm paying 59 so I'm also thinking on switching...Thanks!

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Hi everyone, I'd like to share my experience with Salt Fiber as it might help someone who's living nearby and considering going for it.

I live in Geneva, near the railway station. For most of the last decade I was a subscriber to K-sys offer 20Mbs fiber.

I took on Salt Fiber offer. 5 days later I received the hardware, then I had to wait for 3 more days for the connection to be activated.

Using the 1Gbs RJ45 port of my motherboard, I get around 900Mbps in both download and upload.

Using the 10Gbps PCIexpress Asus card that I bought from Digitec (about 100 CHF), my download and upload speed both bumped up to 7Gbs, something I'm quite happy with.

Tl;Dr : I'm a satisfied customer

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Thanks for the experience reports. I'm laughing about the crowds using UPC leaving for Salt. At least, seen the often ugly support&service at UPC, you're already used to it and in case can continue flawlessly with the also much criticized Salt support.

I've also switched to Salt, still waiting. A point worth mentioning is that Salt offers up to 2 months free access on their connection, as long your actual contract with the previous provider is still running. Would guess, useful for those who "want it ASAP".

I didn't find the point online on their site, but it's in written in their flyers available in their physical shops.
See attachment. Says +/- translated: No double bills. Salt remits at maximum 2 months of the grundgebühr (39.95/49.95 CHF/month) after activation of the Salt connection (in the Salt box). You just have to present your bills of the previous provider for the same time period, I guess in a Salt shop or even online/email with scans.

Some said this was told/offered them directly by the Salt suport, however, just in the case, you have a "right" on this deductions.

regards

Lots of people who survived a BAD experience with Salt wouldn't touch them with a barge pole, but if anyone feels like it, free to them!

Re: Salt Fiber Box

This card (Asus) from digitec is tragic. It needs active cooling!! If I get more than 4-5 Gbps, then the upload is 0. Like the line is dead. Open case and a small fan and if I touch the metallic part on it, i feel THE BURN!!!

Re: Salt Fiber Box

This card is cheap but has poor reviews considering the thermal dissipation. According to the article I shared here, that's one of the reasons people looking for a 10G network should build networks BASE-SR (optic cable) and not BASE-T (Ethernet).

Sure, Ethernet is the most convenient. But it's better to think ahead and build a BASE-SR network imho. For a couple of hundreds CHF you can get it, evenb less if you look on ebay (lots of companies selling their hardare when they upgrade)

I just posted a new thread about Sunrise's new promotion which is 45CHF for 1Gbit/sec for 12 months, plus maybe a 10% discount for Sunrise mobile customers. I don't have it yet but thinking about giving them a call tomorrow as I'm still internet-less and have been hotspotting for some time. I think we're probably in the same boat... don't need the 10G with Salt Fiber but that price is enticing!

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Hi again everyone,

Has anyone had a problem with connecting to the 5GHz?

I connected no problem, did a speed test and all was OK. I changed the SSID and then it wouldn't let me connect to it again. It would be detected but disappear when trying to connect.

I went ahead and reset the router to factory settings and it appears that everything is reset, but now I cannot even see the 5GHz SSID.

Any ideas before getting stuck on hold?

Thanks!

Re: Salt Fiber Box

I had exactly the same problem.
I first of all turned off all my other 5GHz that I had access to as they seemed to interfere.
I then had to enable the guest 5GHz ssid. It then took about 10 mins for it to appear.

After this initial messing about I have been using it for about four days now, and I am very happy with the speed.
I get 900+ up and down via ethernet, and approx 600 up and down via wifi.
The Tv bit is the side I am not as thrilled about, as using the Apple TV remote is a pain.
Overall for the price I am happy.

Thanks for the reply!

I didn't turn on the guest wifi, but seems to have fixed itself.

I had called support when I noticed this (same time as post) and the guy on the phone said this wasn't the first time he's heard of this.

So far in my experience, anytime I change something to do with the 5GHz band, it takes a while for it to actually work. Each time I changed the SSID and left it for several hours (sleep, work), without trying to connect immediately after the change, it fixed itself. Certainly not ideal, but it's something.

I have the same problem too, when i activate WLAN, or save the WLAN settings on the WLAN Tab of the Box Administration, the 5Ghz SSID appears for a couple of seconds, then disappears and comes back after around 10 minutes, and then stays and i can connect without any problems.

Seems to be a software problem on the box if many are having the same problem.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Anyone having issues using the salt fiber box with extender? We get dropped a lot. We can see extender but extender drops from salt box for no apparent reason.

Also, my two cents, and its been said before, Salt customer service sucks. I have issues with the apple tv box, cant seem to get Switzerland cable choices, it sees US (and yes, I am using Swiss apple account). Called Salt and was told i have to call apple. As well, Salt has limited customer services hours, basically your work hours.

UPC service was always excellent by comparison.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Has anyone tried to subscribe to the Salt offer while selecting the date of activation?
I have used this option on July 31st, asking for an activation on Aug 31st. As today, order is still "accepted", but activation still pending. And I haven't received the hardware at all, so I'm starting to be worried.

I did subscribe "ASAP". Nevertheless, according to others who subscribed for an exact date of activation, they reported that it was much of a just-in-time-logistic, hardware delivered just few days prior to the activation. Activation in the salt online portal will be "still pending" until activation. Nothing to worry for instance IMO.
But Salt says 1-7 weeks until activation, so hopefully they manage this in 4 weeks for you.

This is the problem of APPLE account, not Salt's.
I cannot find "Salt.TV" in the appstore with my account, while my wife's account works fine. We both registered apple account in USA, after we moved to Switzerland, my wife changed the region to Switzerland by entering a Swiss Credit Card, while I didn't.

I am almost ready to move to this Salt deal for internet and tv. But the apple box is something I want to be sure about.... I don't have an apple account.

So:

1. Will I need one to use apple TV for this package (which I understand is the TV box used by Salt for TV channels in the package)? Or does the salt account just use it as hardware, independent of apple?

2. If I do need to, can I create an apple account from any device or do I need to use an apple device (ipad iphone etc? or the apple TV box)

3. Or, can I just use my wife's Swiss apple account (or will it clash with the details of the slt account if its in my name?)
