So I'm most likely moving, and would have loved to take my salt fibre with me.

Sadly, the new house won't have fibre for another year or so...

Has anyone been through a similar process? Will Salt provide isdn/adsl or some other horribly slow copper-based service until such a time that fibre is available?

I'll call salt when I can...
see my post above. If Salt provides service at your area, they will come and install the necessary equipment.

Here is my speed test using my new Salt fiber box, i'm using this 10 Gbit ethernet adapter connected to the 10 Gbit port on the box.

Using this for 1 almost one week now, so far so good.
Hi Mate

Did you make any software changes to the Network card? I'm using the same one on a Mac and only getting 650Mbps. Typical speed on my normal 1Gbps NIC is 950. Trying to break the 1GBPS :-)

Love Salt. Quality product at a great price.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Sorry I'm still going to move to Zurich and have no idea about changing the companies. If I change from UPC (current subscription) to Salt, would I lose the internet service till Salt activates? And does it actually take 20 days or 5 weeks to activate?

Salt offer a deal where they will not charge you for a "changeover" month, if you present a copy of the other company's bill that overlaps with your first Salt bill.
I took advantage of it when I changed, and it was easy - I just walked into the local Salt store and they made a copy of the relevant bill for their records, then sent out a revised bill for the month with a total of zero monthly fee (I still had to pay Salt's initial setup costs).

Thanks, that's a great tip! But will that mean I will have service (internet) from my old provider till Salt activates?

We had an overlap, where both fibre services were available for most of the month - Swisscom through port 1, Salt in port 2. The Swisscom one ended at the end of the month, the Salt one started on the 12th of the same month, so we had a chance to finish watching any movies/tv shows we had recorded on Swisscom before we left ... and we were not left without internet in between.

The phone was still with Swisscom until the end of the month, when it transferred smoothly to Salt with the same number. You need to ask for that when setting up the Salt contract, but it's no problem at all. Just sign a form they give you (with the correct details) and mail it off ...

For a while we had both boxes plugged in and running, although for the last week the Swisscom one was simply to keep the phone connected - we switched off the Swisscom wifi completely, with the phone plugged directly into the router.

Re: Salt Fiber Box : new features soon ?

Possibly interesting for the readers around, here is what we may get in a few months according to "^AL", who is sometimes answering on twitter on the SaltMobile_Care account:
So IPv6 this summer and Bridge/VPN in autumn.

Otherwise pretty happy with our salt fiber line, only a few short outages (last one on Sunday 23.06, cf. https://allestörungen.ch/stoerung/sa...erung-bei-salt). Wondering when they are going to increase the prices... :->

Re: Salt Fiber Box

as i will be moving into a new place in one month's time, i wanted to arrange the internet connection stuff in advance, so that i do not miss a moment of connectedness :P

seeing salt's offer, i went and ordered one at a salt store, and even paid for activation (99.95 CHF) in the shop. they told me that i need to call and arrange cancellation with my current provider (sunrise) at my current address.

so, i called sunrise hotline to cancel, to realize i had acted too quick by ordering salt's offer right away. when i asked sunrise to cancel the internet subscription, they made me an offer for 1 Gbps fiber at 40 CHF (originally 130 CHF), and even an offer for all unlimited mobile in ch for an additional 30, with some more discounts on top. though, since i already started the salt's process, i had to cancel anyways.

well, salt's is still a good offer with 10 Gbps at a very close price, but reading about issues with salt's hotline and that salt does not even guarantee dedicated minimum 1 Gbps, i feel a bit bad leaving sunrise, which has a rather good customer support. now, i can only hope that i don't have troubles with salt connection to require their customer support.

anyways, all in all, i guess, i recommend to those who are willing to switch, to check for an offer from their current provider first

have a nice weekend.

I would say the Salt support probably is not as bad as generally rumored, but still of personal benefit if you never have to use it.

As for the "not guaranteed 1Gbit" this might be true, nevertheless a very far theory. Since downloads with up to the promised 10Gbit are downloaded in no time, at worst you will experience that your full speed is not given 24/7, but only 24/6days 23hrs 30mins ...

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Hi
It has almost been one year with Salt, very happy with them so far. Well except for the stupid apple TV remote of course.
I'm moving tomorrow and did a line transfer. Here is how it went :

I called the customer service in end of May and told them I was going to move in July. They asked a couple of information and told me I had to cancel current subscription and activate a new one.

Of course I had to pay for the activation once again but I should be refunded chf 50 after the first month.
I don't have to pay the cancelation fees of course.

It was not possible to get the new fiber box to my current adress. They send it to the new adress which is completely stupid because either
a/you don't live there yet so the parcel will be returned
or
b/you activate after moving in but then you have to wait several weeks to get the new box. What I managed to do was putting my name on the mail box of the future apartment so I could be delivered the new fiber box.

I received a message from salt telling me the line activation was scheduled for July first so I should have internet the day I move in (which is... Tomorrow). If things go according to this plan then the transfer will be perfect.

I still need to give them back my current fiber box and apple TV. Do you think I can go I to a salt store?

Cheers,

Re: Salt Fiber Box

i thought the apple tv thing was implicitly sold to the customer, thus the 198 CHF - 6 CHF x (months) cancellation fee. i am not sure how it works with transfer to new address, though.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Not exactly. Apple TV is yours after 12 months. I unsubbed 11 months after subscription so I have to give it back. As for the fiber box, it's theirs.
If you change your address and your new address is compatible with Salt fiber then you don't have to pay the 198 chf stuff (this applies only if you leave them for good).

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Ok so my line has been activated yesterday at around 21:00 (so 4 hours late), this is acceptable of course.
Everything went very well except that tonight I lost the fiber sync. I guess I'll wait until tomorrow and ask for support if it hasn't come back. Too bad because the transfer was almost perfect.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

After a few problems, and a nice help by the tech guy from Twitter, I managed to get everything working.

I ran a couple of speed tests and noticed something which may be obvious, but it never hurts to remind it:
Here is my first test with a RJ45 cable (don't know the cat, nothing written on it, but it is quite recent)

I did another test with a similar cable I bought last year:

Both got me decent results, but +2,5 Gbit/s with the latter. So don't forget to check your cables even if you think they are up to date, they may not yield the best results.

(note: I ran 6 tests with each cable, not statistically significant I know but hey)

But according to your results pics, it doesn't make really sense, since the upload is the same for both cables. Unless you have a cable that has different "attributes" per direction.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

There is a new firmware for the Salt Fiber Box. v1.01.19 build51 . It introduces the IPv6, didn't notice anything else.
Noticed it unintentionally after a box reboot. My upload didn't work after that for a while, but is running now regularly. Another user reported to be unable to login into the box, while the network itself still worked.

And BTW, with a system without bottlenecks I was able to achieve a best (and constant) performance of ~ 6Gbit with REAL downloads.

Hey, cool, thanks for the good news CHnuschti ! Can you tell what kind of IPv6 we get ? I hope it is also static... Still got the old firmware (and won't reboot the box now as not at home the next weeks and I need my VPN :-)).

Cheers & happy testing!

Well, I've never used IPv6 so far, no experience in this field.
In (expert setting) Network=>IPv6 you just can set "firewall settings", with a custom option. No switch to en-/disable IPv6. ???
In =>overview=>state=>detail, IP v4 as well v6 are listed, however at v6 it's just empty.
Can't see any other related settings. I thought a router is supposed to get IP 4 and 6 simultaneously?

So at first sight it makes only moderate sense to me. Maybe it is just the first step, and they deliver access of/to the salt box over IPv6 later.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Our cable provider has recently added IPV6, saw it in the Speed Test page. But does not seem to be always active, guess they are testing it and will enable for future use. Whan I asked them about it last year, they said they have more than enough IP addresses available so had no need to go to IPV6

One day hopefully we will finally get Fibre in our street, but most likely will move before that happens.
