Re: Salt Fiber Box

You can try, however you computer inside (eg. drives) will be an issue as they are mostly not cabable of 10gbit... but then would be interesting to see speed test result from that setup

Re: Salt Fiber Box

I would but I am on macbook
Thinking about buying a new pc soon, I've seen some new mobo from asrock with 10gbit standard. Should be fun.

I'm considering leaving Swisscom (have a 100/100 fiber plan) for Salt. I'd like to keep both operators, at least in the beginning, to be sure Salt is working as advertised.

So I called earlier today and they told me that no, even with two outputs on my fiber plug in the apartment, Swisscom and Salt cannot work at the same time. I was told several times that I need to terminate my Swisscom plan to enable Salt services.
Probably true... for much of Switzerland, both Swisscom and Salt use socket 1 on your OTO so it's somewhat impractical for them to co-exist.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Well that's too bad because once you've decided to change your provider, there is no turning back, or you are charged 200 - 3 (per month) by Salt.
Is there some kind of withdrawal period if you change your mind during the first days?
Salt has interesting offers but I don't appreciate being held prisonner of a service (or pay a ransom to leave)...

Do you test / download via wifi or lan cable?
Did you ping salt about that?
it seems the problem might be related to the ASUS PCI-EX4 10Gbit card, as the internal Gigabit port works flawless (albeit at a max speed of only ~500-600Mbit.....but I believe this is due to the long UTP Cat6 cable - 20mt - and the Switch that I use, because the AppleTV which is connected directly to the Salt Box with a short cable provides around 900Mbit speed).

I have now bought another 10Gbit card, and plan on using that (directly), with a 20mt UTP Cat 7 cable....let us see if things get better :-)

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Hello all, thanks for this useful thread.

I've received my Salt fiber box around the 22nd.
The OTO has been installed yesterday morning and I have received the activation email almost exactly 24h later (port nr 2).

The fiber led is not blinking (sync), it's just off which means forbidden according to the user manual.
Do any of you had to wait after the so called "activation" or was it OK on the instant?

Thanks for the answers, I don't want to try calling the support for half an hour

Cheers.

ok...it does definitely NOT work at 10Gbit.....even with the new PCI-EX4 10Gbit card, the computer is connected at 10Gbit, but both upload and download speed are limited to about 1Gbit, even less (700-800Mbit).

moreover, the FTP does not work....when you use a FTP server, after opening up all the necessary ports, the speed is about 100Kbit (yes, kbit !!!); FTP seems only to work if you enable the internal FTP server in the SALT Fiber BOX, but in this case you need to completely disable the firewall to have the FTP folder (i.e. a USB stick or Hard disk connected to the SALT Box) accessible from the outside.....

still a good deal for 49.- CHF, but was hoping a better service....

That's not bad at all!

I guess with time they will get rid of their 'teething' problems and also there will be more and more information around on how to do things on their equipment.
Still - price / value ratio seems to be more than excellent.
Indeed. They had a mysterious problem that started at 1am where by my mobile (on Salt 4G) couldn't connect to my server at home that lives behind the Salt fiber box. Other hosts like on Amazon Web Services and from the wifi at work worked just fine.

Anyway, it is worth noting that the poor dolts who answer the phone at 0800 700 500 are basically useless. All they seem to be able to do is to file tickets with their technical department, which then take forever to get resolved. You never get to talk to someone who can actually solve your problem. Well unless your problem is not being able to read the user manual, of course!

Recently I've taken to tweeting at their @saltmobile_care account - and each time my connectivity issues were cleared up within a matter of hours. Hooray for the @saltmobile_care folks - they are actually pretty great!

Re: Salt Fiber Box

so after lots of weeks of waiting today they activated it (I still did not get an email or sms, but lets forget that for a moment...)

I tested with a 10G network card:
1ms ping, 2900 Mbps download, 1500 Mbps upload

Is your hardware able to maximize the performance??
I mean, to use 10gbit = 1250mb/s you need at least an M.2 ssd NVMe able to perform those speeds...
Even with a normal SSD sata3 you'll not breach the 4gbit wall..

Re: Salt Fiber Box

it was speedtest with iway server

I have NVMe SSD (pcie 3.0 x4) 3.5GB/sec seq write speed, so should be enough...
so far I did not find any server from where I could download with higher speeds than this

Should you try to run more instance from different servers? Things become interesting here
Thanks for your feedback btw

Re: Salt Fiber Box

but still my problem that the transceiver is too hot (72 °C) after these tests...
maybe it is throttling due to overtemperature
right now I do not have any cooling spray/fan to test this

Re: Salt Fiber Box

with multiple speedtest instances using different servers for a short time I reached 4Gbps peak, than it was dropped to 3.5Gbps

Re: Salt Fiber Box

I think you guys are missing something here. I bet that servers at the other end are not capable of 10GBPS to single client - this is really fast!.
The only way (in my opinion) to saturate 10gbit on your end would be to run few speed tests in parallel to various servers and then calculate total bandwidth (can you see that on salt box??). Otherwise it's so fast that the bottleneck isn't on your end anymore.

Ya, ok I missed that in last attempt. Still, 10gbit is a lot, I'd be super surprised if you'd really get 10gbps.
Also, I'd question ability of todays computers to handle that much - even with only speedtest.

Still you result proves to me this is an awesome offer never the less.

yes, the offer is awesome, I agree, but the operations around and the quality of the router would still need some improvement.

I am checking if exists any router with the same fiber port + 10gbit ethernet, but seems not.
