Re: Salt Fiber Box

Here is my speed test using my new Salt fiber box, i'm using this 10 Gbit ethernet adapter connected to the 10 Gbit port on the box.

Using this for 1 almost one week now, so far so good.

Hey aypro thank you for that - didn't realise that was a common address for almost all router boxes. Also thank you for showing what hardware you are using. I am getting a lan adapter bought over from the UK (electronics seem expensive here in Switzerland!) in a couple of weeks so will get to test speeds via Lan then. But for the most part i'm happy with salt fiber - again its been pretty consistent and no down time.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Well, a few days in and I have a bit of feedback.

1. Has anyone noticed how much the wifi speeds drop off as you move away from the router (yes, I understand how wifi works). In my living room, I'm getting close to 700Mpbs , but upstairs in my office I only get around 50-100. I'm guessing maybe I have some very thick floors it's contending with.

2. DNS - I hate that I cannot set my own DNS server. I use OpenDNS, and I can change it on the endpoints, which works, but is kind of a pain...

Unfortunately If I choose to use my much more feature rich Meraki MX security appliance as my WiFi, I'm limited to 250mb/s throughput on the device. Again - plenty fast, but I loose out anything above 250.

Hi,
I'm having the same problem. Youtube does not work anymore on iOS/Android TV apps when connected through Salt Fiber. It still does if I activate my VPN on my iPhone or if I access youtube on my computer. Did you get any solution?
Unfortunately I couldn't succeed to resolve the problem. I resented the modem, turned off the firewall nothing seems to help resolve the problem. I called the technical hotline and registered a service ticket on this matter. I also noticed that google play store cannot be accessed on my android phone.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Hello everyone,

I would like to share my bad experience so far.
I ordered salt fiber 30.04 since then I had received no updates or emails/calls etc.
Also, my account on the website was visible but whenever I tried to see the status of my order I got an error.
The past Friday I called the hotline for Salt Fiber and after speaking with them, they spoke with the technical department and told me to wait for a call to arrange for the OTO installation the coming week.
I still have not received any equipment as most people did in a few days and now if I try to login to salt fiber I get an error "login failed as the user is disabled".

Did anyone have a similar experience?
How do I know that they actually are working on my account?
I did not get any ticket number or confirmation by email/SMS etc.
Should I call again the support hotline?

Also another question, "How is the OTO installation done?" Do they only need access next to my existing UPC plug in the wall? Should I only clear the space there? Or will I have to move a lot of furniture?

Thanks in advance for any answers or feedback!

Re: Salt Fiber Box

hi, I got the same error "login failed as the user is disabled" for few days, then after the shipment was done the account worked again and I could see the status correctly.
To me seems strange you did not get any email confirmation, I have got both emails and SMS.

Installation is done separately, in my case was done on the phone plug.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

My account got updated today and I received the email and SMS.
Apparently, my order got stuck and I thought it was OK since they mentioned up to 5 weeks for OTO installation and another 3 weeks for activation.
I should have checked earlier with them.

So the OTO installation just requires them access over the phone plug?
That is perfect.

Hopefully I will get that sweet sweet internet in a few days

for me worked well so far:

Ordered: 2018.05.08
Validated: 2018.05.08
Arrived: 2018.05.22
Fiber Installed: 2018.06.08

Awaiting activation
Activation was done today 2018.06.11

So far all very positive, 1 month including the fiber installation in the apartment on the 6th floor.

Now let see if it works as promised, 10gb will be difficult, but will be happy enough if I can get 1gb bidirectional :-)

Any feedback regarding TV quality of service? This is my main concern, any comment would be appreciated
The TV quality is amazing! What a difference with the Sunrise TV box or Swisscom!!! Very easy setting with the apple TV, I have connected it to the fiber box in less than a minute. I have a 4K OLED TV, so it connects HDR with the Apple TV, amazing colors and sharp image. Netflix also very good. The Apple remote is a bit tricky first but than you get used to and/or you can use your iPhone as Remote. Flipping channels is fast, just waiting that Apple activates Siri in Switzerland... The WiFi passwords are immediately recognised if you have an apple ID and you can also use the Salt-TV on your computer/labtop/iPad/iPhone, even when travelling. Love it

And finally 1gb bidirectional, connecting by wire directly to the Salt Box

I have no technical means to test faster then this, but from other posts should be possible to go much faster.

Overall conclusion: very happy with Salt, good value for money, no issues of any kind so far, I guess other providers will have to cut prices soon.

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Hi everyone,

I finally find out why Salt Fiber can be so cheap (compared to other providers), maybe was discussed already in the forum, if so sorry for the spam.

Salt Fiber uses XGS-PON standard, details here

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10G-PON

this meens the connection is actually shared among a certain number of users, seems 32 but the standard allow up to 128.

So theoretically speed is 10gb but really depends on the usage of your group.

Other providers use a dedicated 1gb fiber, so is a "real" 1gb.

This also would explain why sometime I get "very slow" performance, maybe someone else is doing some heavy lifting. And the risk is that speed will decrease in the future as more people get connected and more services (TV) are in use.

I think in practical terms both options get you 1gb, which seems more then enough, so Salt lower price seems still a good deal.

But for someone who need more constant performance and is willing to pay at least 50% more if not double, then other providers like ini7 could be a better option.

happy surfing

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Thats not a news, this is a known fact from day one.
In fact, with most providers you use share bandwidth, if not on last mile than on backbone. Only exception here is init7 / fiber7.

Still, salt offer is awesome, and let's face it - 10gbps won't be achievable for end users for quite some time, in reality most people don't use more than 100mbps if at all (4k TV is ~25 mbps per stream).

Re: Salt Fiber Box

Hey

I think only 1 person mentioned whats it like to watch TV on the Apple box with Salt TV. Would love to hear your feedback on speed of changing channels and the general menu etc. I currently have 500mb with UPC and although it's pretty good, I do like the Apple TV setup.

Anyone else move from UPC?

Love to hear your feedback.

Thanks

Hi, I just moved from UPC to Salt/AppleTV, in short:
- many more channels
- much better quality, image seems much better even if I do not have 4k tv
- many apps and games via appleTV
- appleTV remote controls everything, so just one remote :-O
- if you have an iTune account, you get all music and content directly available in the appleTV

I am not an apple user, but the AppleTV is really great, so getting it for free is a big plus.

Thanks for the info mate.

Is it easy to record and navigate the menu?

Thanks

I think salt.tv is only related to mobile accounts...
For what I understood, the only way to see tv on Salt Fiber is through Apple TV...
