Billag Registration / Backdating?

OK, this whole Billag situation confuses the living daylights out of me.

I moved to my flat in early 2014, and maybe mid 2014 someone rang the house door and said they were from Billag: I had to pay for all TVs. I simply said I do not watch TV at all, no SRF, no radio, no nothing. Netflix and Youtube is all I ever used (and this is true, I don't listen to the radio, I don't watch any TV at all, ever). So he left, and that was that.

I recently got a letter saying that everyone in Switzerland now has to register for Billag, if they have any device that *could* access radio or TV (meaning every internet connected smart device / PC would qualify today).

Now when I go to register, it says radio or TV, and which date to backdate. What the heck should I do? I still don't watch any TV, I don't listen to any radio... did the laws change since 2014? If the law did change, can I just backdate to the day the law changed (or better yet, today)?

I don't get why they're sending me this mail 4 years in. Thanks for any help!

Actually they just took on new laws and per 2019 everything will change (since every household will get a bill regardless of watching or not, as I understood it)

But that should not be what this is about. You have to pay for now (and/or previously)

It shows only radio and TV since you register for the signal you can receive on your equipment.

If you have a computer/phone/tablet that can receive radio you sign up for radio, and if they can receive telly and you have an account at whatever IP-TV provider you also sign up for television.

Re: Billag Registration / Backdating?

OK, I'm just going to enter today's date and start paying, see what happens. It seems too easy to say "look you have a cell phone" for them, and a large fight if they decide to escalate. Whatever, tax is tax. I put today's date as the backdate. If they come after me for many years, I'll fight back, I don't use this stuff at all :/

Re: Billag Registration / Backdating?

Enter a future date (beginning of next month) and only for radio (because having a mobile phone or an internet connection means you are able to listen to the radio).
They'll be happy to start collecting any fee and won't bother you further.

fyi. when i cancelled my billag, i wasn't permitted to backdate. i certainly wouldn't plan on back-dating any registration in the future.

Re: Billag Registration / Backdating?

I just set it for yesterday's date (yesterday), I will update the final amount invoiced when I receive it here. Thanks for the help, I did find the giant 80 page thread after posting this but there is a lot of conflicting information about Billag... hope they just get their money and do something good with it.

Re: Billag Registration / Backdating?

Actually, depsite the threatending tone of the letter, you are under no obligation to reply.

Also, despite the new law, there will continue to be an opt-out option for not paying until 2023 or something like that.

That's when the transitional period ends. We'll see if there is still any conventional TV left by then.

I thought that from 1 Jan2019, everybody has to pay regardless of having any TV / radio or not?

So how can it be possible to opt-out until 2023?

According to Bakom,

Quote:
Haushalte ohne Radio- oder Fernsehempfangsgeräte zahlen während einer Übergangsfrist von fünf Jahren nichts.

In short, every household which is registered in the "register of residents" gets a bill of 400,-, and during the first years it would be possible to get exempted if you own zero devices designed to listen to radio or watch telly.

I don't like the Billag, we have a telly which we only use on the consoles, we never listen to radio, but truth be told I sometimes watch SRF on the laptop for sports...

Re: Billag Registration / Backdating?

I see, thanks

So reading that "Households without radio or television receivers pay nothing for a transitional period of five years"

It seems that you can opt-out only if you do not have any radio or TV device - if you have only radio, you still then have to pay the full 365.- - is that correct?

Seems like it here also:

"Households with no possibility of receiving radio and television can be exempted, on application, from payment of the fee (opting out). This exemption option is limited by statute and will apply only until the end of 2023."

https://www.bakom.admin.ch/bakom/en/...on-system.html

So you can only get out of it by being opted out of TV AND Radio (I don't know how one can opt out of radio as they classify any modern device as a radio)

Re: Billag Registration / Backdating?

A household without any device capable of receiving radio or television would be a rarity on it's own.

We have way over 10 devices capable of doing so...

I occasionally watch major sporting events on television, but then I go to a bar or pub and watch it with the mob. Sometimes more for the entertainment value of the people around me than the sports thing itself. That just doesn't work at home. I cannot remember the last time I actually listened to anything on the radio at home.

Re: Billag Registration / Backdating?

You are paying the money because you own devices, that are capable of listen to the radio or watch shows on your pc (mediathek).
The least amount pery year , you have to pay is around 166 sfr.

When you have access the the web, then you have to pay.
Otherwise you have the seal the socket for the cable(like UPC), you are not allowed to have a mobile........
When you have a contract for both devices, pay the money

This is what the Billag man tells people. But it's not the whole truth. It has been discussed at length on this forum.
