Android Mobile Smashed - how to retreive data

Not a Switzerland question but I was wondering if anyone had had any experience with this.

I smashed the screen on my Alcatel phone and the touch function of the screen no longer works. (Everything else does - the BBC App alarm wakes me up but I can't hit the cancel button!) I never really warmed to the phone (I was constantly fighting off unwanted apps), it was relatively cheap and is now a couple of years old so not worth repairing. I've bought a replacement.

I would, however, like to get the photos and contacts off the old phone. There seem to be a few utilities around to do this (they all seem to cost about USD/CHF 50 which I suppose I'm prepared to pay). Has anyone had any good experience with any of them and could recommend one?

Have you tried plugging it into the USB port on your computer?

Normally it's dead easy to find the photos.

Also check the alcatel site to see if they have a backup/sync program which runs on whatever OS your computer uses - these often have a function which allows you to sync the phone contacts to outlook (which is a great way to double your contacts in outlook).

Yeah, it just appears as if it's another drive, but when I go to it, there's nothing there. I think that if the phone was working, I could allow the phone to be read, but the screen is locked so I can't get in to allow it.

It's been a while, but I was faced with this a few years back. If I'm not mistaken I did it with nothing other than https://www.clockworkmod.com/

Normally with Android, you can swipe from the top after plugging the phone into a PC and select Charge only, files, or photos. If the setting is Charge only, then you'll see the drive as blank.

Normally with Android your contacts and photos are synced to the Cloud?

What, and give Sergey Brin access to my priceless lunchtime stop-frame Lake Geneva movie (incomplete)?

Next you'll be telling me to let my landlord break in to my apartment to fix the damage from when my upstairs neighbour's heating system leaked!

If you'e prepared to cross over to the dark side ADB pull and then a push to a replacement device will work.

Re: Android Mobile Smashed - how to retreive data

To those of you on the edge of your seats agonizing over how this saga would end...

I went to Fust, where a surprisingly helpful chap sold me a USB OTG adaptor for ~ CHF10. I could then simply unlock the phone with a mouse and connect it to my PC and, as JW first suggested, I could simply access all the folders in Windows explorer. A bit of a pain juggling mouse connections but I could get all I needed from the phone. The movie is safe!

Thank you everyone for taking time to reply.

If you're not willing to use cloud-services, be sure to make some backups of your data from time to time...
