TV replay is maybe at an end!

They want that you watch the ads and not skip over them with replay. Seems they want to change the laws

Re: TV replay is maybe at an end!

Replay TV is virtually the modern and comfortable form of video recorder, which was in the 1990s in almost every household under the flicker box. All told, today TV providers such as Swisscom or Zattoo record the entire program, save it in the cloud and sell Replay TV as an (expensive) additional feature in their TV subscriptions. The TV stations are compensated for this only with a small copyright fee.

This annoys the stations. They lament for years about lost advertising revenue in the millions, which gives them time-shifted television. Their problem: Although Replay TV increases television consumption, the viewers skip the advertising, but ultimately only the subscription-financed TV providers such as Swisscom and UPC benefit. For private, ad-supported broadcasters, the bill will eventually no longer occur if too many viewers skip the ad.

Now the stations have achieved a stage victory in the fight against Replay TV. The National Council of Telecommunications Commission wants to allow time-shifted television only with their consent and prevent the skipping of advertising.

Dear TV channels, we understand that you have to finance your program, but the reason for the lack of advertising revenue is not the evil replay TV, but the more innovative competition. The money of the advertisers now flows to YouTube and Facebook. The money of the consumers to Netflix. Replay TV would be your chance to move with the times. Restricting replay TV and preventing the reels from advertising is the beginning of the end.

Swiss people, presumably. But many of us use a Swisscom TV subscription or similar to access all the UK channels, with 30 hours replay, via the home box and apps on a variety of other devices, so it would represent a huge change to viewing habits if that were to be outlawed.

How about making the adverts so interesting or entertaining that people actually want to see them?

that's called "product placement". tv shows with product placement are then interrupted by commercials.

For example, on the internet, advertisers believe they have found ways to make adverts into clickbait, and make people consume them voluntarily. I don't know how advertising is charged on EF, but on places like facebook I believe you only pay for actual clicks.

Any technology solution will lead to a hack or workaround sooner rather than later. In the long run carrots are better than sticks.

Re: TV replay is maybe at an end!

It‘s a losing game for Swiss TV. UK iplayer viewing is now about the same as live TV viewing.

Subscription based TV like Netflix is where the future is. Banning/blocking any kind of recording/catch-up system is move worth of King Canute...

To be fair iPlayer is BBC and so the programmes would be ad free anyway

exactly.

Having won the No Billag vote, SRG now firmly believes they have a mandate to turn the clocks back to 1990.

Well Swiss TV is not that bad. German TV like RTL etc are bad bad bad. Advertisements interspersed with a few minutes of entertainment.

That's an absolutely crazy idea (I think we need to busy our governement with a few difficult initiatives, they seem bored).
Who goes home to watch the teli at a certain time? ROFL.

What's next: A law that the farmers must milk their cows by hand?
