Switch mobile from Swisscom to - UPC mobile? Other? (July 2018)

We were using Swisscom for many years for one of our mobile subscriptions in a family. However, with current usage trends, I've realized, that paying above 50 SFr/month (old subscription type) are getting only 500 Mb per month of data, all data roaming and foreign calls come on top of it and etc. And I have looked at new Swisscom subscriptions, there is nothing even close to what I consider being acceptable too, especially with their speed capping policy. So I am contemplating switching to other operator, and looked that UPC is having a promotion for existing customers (we are) for 29 SFr/month with almost all inclusive. I think they are using Salt network, but from 2019 will use Swisscom.

Any feedback on UPC mobile service? Any other suggestions to which operator to change? Primary requirements: not many calls inside CH. data of at least 2 Gb/month, data roaming at least in EU, roaming calls in EU also included.

Thanks a lot in advance for any suggestions and advises!

Re: Switch mobile from Swisscom to - UPC mobile? Other? (July 2018)

Thanks a lot for all replies, really need to think now...

By the way, coming back to Swisscom - does anyone know if speed caps are really enforced or it is only "just in case". And i.e. 30 Mbit/s - does anyone use it? Whats is the practical implication?

Re: Switch mobile from Swisscom to - UPC mobile? Other? (July 2018)

I was on swisscom before - yes speed caps are always enforced. The implication is that you internet doesn't get faster than the limit... in reality on a phone for browsing sites, listening to music, or watching youtube... it doesn't matter.

It's Swisscom's "budget" brand, but you still get full speed on Swisscom's network. 25CHF/month for unlimited calls in CH and 1GB data, then 5CHF per 1GB after (up to max 55CHF, then no more charge after that)

Re: Switch mobile from Swisscom to - UPC mobile? Other? (July 2018)

500 minutes in the whole of EU and CH (and 500 SMSs). 3Gb data at 4G in CH and unlimited at slower speed after that for CHF19 per 30 days pay as you go cancel at anytime.

Oh and free SIM card or number port.

Uses Swisscom‘s net.

Lycamobile.ch

What else is there?

Downside website totally unclear. Customer service in Morocco when they answer, which they do sometimes...

Lyca is idiosyncratic but it works OK for me. I'm in France most weeks and other European countries 2 or 3 times a month.

I've got a bundle with roaming but I've turned roaming off on my phone and it works fine anyway. That's down to them being an MVNO I think. I've no idea how they add up how much data I use, the reports are rubbish but I do see my main allowance going down when I'm in France. No idea what to make of that!

I've a dual-SIM phone and a Lyca France card as well which I pay €4.99/mth for data.

I switched from Swisscom and have used Migros in the past. Before that, I was using sunrise. I work in the mountains and only the Swisscom network has the coverage I need so Lyca and Migros are cheaper alternatives. I've started to use Lyca because the voice roaming is better, with Swisscom I felt I'd got to pay over 100CHF a month to be able to make and receive calls freely while roaming.

While Lyca is a bit odd, I've found it quite liberating to have a phone I can finally make and receive calls without paying a fortune.

Re: Switch mobile from Swisscom to - UPC mobile? Other? (July 2018)

I-ve just changed from M-Budget to Wingo. Reason? From one day to the next my phone stopped connecting to the internet “You have not subscribed to ...”. The customer service unable to do anything other than tell me to turn my phone off. This didn’t work the first time, or the subsequent times they told me it was fixed. No technical expertise here.

Yes they have these promos quite often, trying really hard to find the occasions for it.
Like - now again - 1 year of discounts on 1st year - https://www.yallo.ch/en#abos.

I wonder how long will Swisscom be able to keep their prices this noncompetitive.
Even Sunrise and Salt (in non-second-level sense, but directly) offer 40-50% off on their subs every now and then.

Just like any business Swisscom has customers that are willing to pay the full rack rate. They don’t want to lose revenue from them so they offer deals through wingo.

Emirates don’t discount (much) their First Class fares, but they do in the back.

Re: Switch mobile from Swisscom to - UPC mobile? Other? (July 2018)

ABSOUTELY avoid UPC CABlcom cable at all cost!!! I have had many problems with UPC with incorrect and dubious billing - one instant it took me 5months to resolve and now once again it has taken since April with documents provided them that they have clearly overcharged - but the ey refuse so will have to take legal action. I have Their Customer service is third world, they dont give a damn about resolving problems nor customer satisfaction - they are rude as thugs and aggressive and even had a representative shout at me over the telephone - I was shocked. they may advertise a Lower plan than others for UPC mobile but they will swindle and rip you off, guaranteed. Getting legal involved.
