USA iPhone in Switzerland

I will be visiting USA soon. Apple products, including iPhones are significantly cheaper than in Switzerland. Does anyone have first hand experience of whether USA iPhones work in Europe? I have heard differing opinions.

Re: USA iPhone in Switzerland

Buy a Swiss plug and take it with you. Use the phone before flying back and don't take the US cable and original packaging with you.

Yes, I have done this, but you must buy it unlocked, that is at full price and not attached to a carrier's monthly plan. The modern ones have antennas for GSM as well as CDMA. You can then buy a Swiss SIM card to put in your US phone. Note that if you buy it through a carrier, it may come pre-locked to their network, so you may need an unlock code to have a fully unlocked phone. If you buy it straight from apple this is not necessary as they come unlocked.

For the record in case anybody else is wondering: You can also do this with an older phone purchased through a monthly charge by the carrier, by getting an unlock code from that carrier after the monthly payments have been completed. This effectively unlocks the phone from being tied to that carrier and allows you to use any SIM card you like.

Re: USA iPhone in Switzerland

Significanty cheaper? Are you sure? US prices are before sales taxes (varies by state) while Swiss prices are inclusive of the 7.7% VAT.

You’ll have to buy it in a US State without sales taxes, but you could still be subject to Swiss duty and VAT, and fine if (when) you get caught at the border. Plus the cost of a Swiss charger. You might save a few bucks, but it won’t be significant.

Make sure the phone is unlocked, then it should work fine.
