Thinking of switching from Swisscom

I have Swisscom for Internet, TV and Mobile Phone, it's quite expensive at CHF195 per month but I have Gigabit internet and it all works well.
I was pretty happy with them as they seem more reliable and with better customer service than the likes of UPC and Orange (now Salt obvs) that I used before.
However, I just had my first disappointment with them.
I was on holiday in Japan recently when there was a serious earthquake which resulted in death and a complete blackout. In the aftermath I tried to get information from the official helpline, the UK Embassy etc.
When I got home I was (naively maybe) shocked to see the charges of CHF200 so I contacted them to see if they would maybe reduce the charges, considering the circumstances and the fact that if you are in danger of building up excessive roaming data charges, you are informed, with calls, you are not.
Anyway, they were not interested in any sort of goodwill gesture so it made me reconsider my options.
I'm aware that this was my fault and they are not obliged to do anything but hoped for some flexibility considering the situation.

So, looking around, Salt TV looks inferior as I can't get the same UK domestic channels in HD nor the Pay per view football rentals from Teleclub and Salt mobile still seems to have inferior coverage.
Otherwise, how are UPC these days?
Who else is there?
Should I just swallow my pride and stick with Swisscom?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

None of the other carriers would have played it differently, fyi.

Re: Thinking of switching from Swisscom

I personally would stick... better the devil you know sometimes.

Could have been much worse...CHf 200 is probably not deemed excessive here if your regular bill is a similar amount.

Maybe send them a polite online message asking again, if you contacted them by phone first?

What about travel insurance? Would that pay out?

Re: Thinking of switching from Swisscom

A case of 'chop your nose to spite your face'
It was a terrible tragedy, but you can't expect Swisscom to make judgement calls for every situation. In that situation if you had no way to communicate and someone offered you a way...for say...200Fr, you would probably not think twice.

Swisscom is by far the best carrier, so I would think twice. Is the hassle of moving and then inferior service of another carrier worth 2oo bucks?

Re: Thinking of switching from Swisscom

I spent a similar amount on vacation in the USA.. You can monitor your spending in the "Cockpit" application so there's no real surprise.

Yeah it's a bit more expensive but it just works well. Sure you can get all the channels in HD, heck probably even for free if you are willing to get technical and break some rules but for everything in one place that just works, I'd stick with it.

*On the roaming data charges, it's supposed to stop working (and hence stop charging you) when you use up your inclusive amount or bundle which you can add on?? Again you can control this via the cockpit app.. Are you saying that this technically failed? Maybe then you have a case to argue?
Quoting from the app "After the included volumes or roaming days are exhausted, surfing s only allowed with a valid data package or active basis tariff"

Re: Thinking of switching from Swisscom

I switched to Salt 10Gb internet + TV for 39 CHF a month and I am very happy with the service. I also pay 29 CHF for my mobile contract with them for unlimited data and calls in Switzerland, and 200Mb a month of data in the EU.

They were pretty great at getting the install done and fixing an issue that I had. They even paid for 2 months of my previous providers service so that I didn't have to pay twice and could start my service immediately.

I never watch TV so I have no idea about the quantity or quality of the channels.

I think the internet and TV was only that cheap because I had a mobile contract with them, so just be aware of that.

I've never heard of Fixnet so I can't comment on that, sorry.

I also can't confirm if I actually get 10Gb/s on my internet because I am not aware of any consumer grade Ethernet card that actually gets above 8GB/s throughput

I had WiFi stability issues for a few days which seems to be a common issue with the Salt boxes at the start, but it's been rock solid for over a month now.

The TV is really nice. It's an Apple TV and records all of the movies broadcast automatically so I just check those once a week and save the ones I'm interested in to watch with the wife at some point. I get options for English, French and German audio on a lot of the recorded films too.

Other than that though I can't comment on live TV channel choices/stability etc.

My mobile doesn't always seem to have signal where my wife's one does (Swisscom) but I have no idea if that's the phone or the mobile network. This has only been noticeable in underground parking though and occasionally at a cafe on the top of a mountain.

I haven't used a landline for a good 15 years. The router has an option in the menu to connect to a landline handset but I have no idea how any of that works.

But I think the movies are saved in a web based Cloud and not on your Apple TV?

Re: Thinking of switching from Swisscom

Salt fiber 10gbit is 39 chf / month if you have a mobile contract with them, otherwise it's 49/ month.
Visit fiber.salt.ch for more info.

For mobile plans, check salt.ch -> keep in mind that 95% of time there are massive promotions like 50% off on them.

Correct, until you click on them and save them to your device.

Re: Thinking of switching from Swisscom

Have somebody noticed that Swisscom is very slow lately?

This is a bit technical and I cannot rule out that third-party services are to blame but I have noticed that downloading from most places is much slower than before. This is happening for many independent services (linux updates, rust updates, python, etc.) so I suspect it is actually Swisscom.

I have still measured with the router and speednet and I get the following:

Router - Swisscom: ~900Mbps
PC - Router: ~600Mbps (which is fine.. it is wifi)
Speednet: ~230Mbps (frustrating but still high)
Many downloads are well below 20Mbps.. this did not use to be the case a month ago..

Have people noticed this?

Today I had problems with uploading to Swisscom Cloud. It kept on hanging.

Re: Thinking of switching from Swisscom

Yes, I cannot see packet loss.. but everynow and then some downloads block and I have to stop/start them again.

It is quite frustrating.

I wonder if Salt is better... actually, paying less for at least 300Mbps real throughput would work for me.

Salt users: What is your experience with respect to speed?
