Re: Technophobe needs to get out of Jurassic Era!

Considering I have been thinking about it since November (!!) today I decided to be a big boy and went to a Smartphone shop...I may aswell have gone to a different planet! I had two or three models in mind, none of which were available. Then a sales assistant, fancy geled hair 20 something with far too shiny shoes and an attitude to match, started to go all techy with me while using a kind of "French des banlieues" (very chewed and staccado, not my kind of French!) and he could have been talking Martian for all I knew!
So I ran out as fast as I could, empty handed. Some of the issues that came up is numbers like 64 GB (is it possible?), some SD card, what "forfait" (rental contract) I wanted (I thought I was buying a phone and owned it - although that was perhaps also an option but I did not stay long enough to find out!). Questions I wanted to ask but didn't: am I allowed to keep the same phone number? How do I transfer all my contact numbers from my Sims (?) card of my old Xperia One phone onto a new one...all this on top of all my earlier requirements.

I need to come equiped with my tick list, 3 models (not Apple, that' s beyond my price range) and I can just put it on the counter with no further discussion involved. What 3 models should I ask for? First one is Huawei Test Honor 9 Life (I don't care if the Chinese find out I'm into yodel!). 2 and 3?

I dont know what your price range is but I would double down on the Apple recommendation - the reason they are making so much money is because you dont need to care how much RAM (thats the 64GB) the phone has or if you can or should extend the memory with an SD card. You buy one and it works.

If you want to avoid those discussions with teenage sales people, just buy a middle of the road phone online, put your simcard in and use it. If you are fine with the Chinese... in Asia is Xiaomi getting more and more popular for making phones that look and work exactly like all others for a little less money… https://www.mobilezone.ch/mobiltelef.../poco-phone-f1

Re: Technophobe needs to get out of Jurassic Era!

Take a Techi with you, there is so much to think of.
Its really not that easy as a lot of people mention here.

I assume, your SimCard is way to big for a new phone, but this can be changed in the shop.
If you need data outside your home and WiFi range for Navi or WhatsApp ect... (if you have WifI), then a new contract can be interesting (incl. new phone)

After first start of the phone, the Techi can also remove all the unwanted Apps from your view to keep it simple.
He can also add an additional memory card if needed and setup your EMail accounts and transfers numbers (it depends how you have saved it in the past).

So let somebody help you please

I would agree with this. In theory, it is a simple concept and for people already used to the technology and vocabulary, it might be quick and easy. However, there are an overwhelmingly large number of variables and options which can have a significant impact on the final cost and your satisfaction going forward.

There is a lot of gee-whiz technology out there, but what a person actually "needs" is typically a very small subset of that.

For me, it's been almost two years that I've been in Switzerland. I've been using castoff phones from family (iPhone 6s currently) and Swisscom's pay-as-you-go monthly plan. It costs me about 15CHF a month for phone service with no contract. It doesn't have to be expensive.

I'm quite happy with my CAT
https://www.catphones.com/en-gb/cat-s41-smartphone/

More or less indestructible, akku last one weak. No fingerprint recognition and a bad front camera though.

Re: Technophobe needs to get out of Jurassic Era!

MIRACLE! Armed with my long list of requirements, I finally purchased a Samsung Galaxy A7...on line! I'm only brave in some areas, technology is not one of them! They can take our freedom, but they won't take our phooones!

Anyway, Mr Useless is looking at this strange object from Mars, not even knowing what to do with it.

1. Is my phone number transferred automatically with my SIM card or is it a different business altogether? If anyone laughs, I'll poke them in the eye!

2. How do I keep all my phone contacts and conversations from my old Xperia One phone?

3. Is my SIM card from Xperia compatible and transferable to the Samsung?

4. Is the memory separate from SIM card. My Xperia was a 4G and now supposedly I have a 64 G but no SIM card in it. What do I do?

RIght, I guess I've made everyone's day with my questions. You can take the piss as long as you give me the proper answers to my questions as well, if not, shut up and go and play on your phone!

They will take your freedom via the phone. The more modern your phone the faster goes your freedom

You started this thread with <<In other words, my friends and family are giving me grief for having a first generation Android phone>>
Lately you told us your wife and your youngest (the last to leave) moved out.
So why exactly did you buy a new phone?

1. Yes your phone-no. is on the SIM card BUT
3. the sim card might not fit, it might be too big. If so you have to get replacement.
2. You could transfer all your contacts on the SIM card before you put it in the new phone. Of course that only works if the SIM card fits.
I use MyPhoneExplorer to synchronize with my computer, it can also transfer my stuff to a new phone. Neat programm, free (I donated though years ago, because it is neat).
4. 64G is pretty cool, considering we are all waiting for 5G.
Yes the phone-memory is separate from SIM card.

hth

You sound like you need to invite a friend who installs it all for you - before you get him/her drunk on the best Scotish whiskey in the house.

The amount of memory you have is 64 GB. I am sure that will be fine for what you need. My work only gives me twice this in my computer.

Are you offering? Remember, I only have 3 friends! Yes, all by myself (soon) and precisely new phone so that I can WhatsApp with my kids, now I don't have the "Transmitter" (their mother!). Thanks for MyPhoneExplorer tip. Will look into it tomorrow because something tells me any attempt at this time might last well into the night and I need a phone in working order tomorrow! Cheers anyway!

1. Is my phone number transferred automatically with my SIM card or is it a different business altogether? If anyone laughs, I'll poke them in the eye!

Yes. Your sim card is what "drives" your phone. It's why you can have sim only contracts.

2. How do I keep all my phone contacts and conversations from my old Xperia One phone?
if you save all your contacts from your okd phone onto the sim ("should" be an option in contacts or settings) then they will go with the SIM when you out it in new phone.

3. Is my SIM card from Xperia compatible and transferable to the Samsung?
Don't know. AFAIK they should be. You'll see when you open the slot.

4. Is the memory separate from SIM card. My Xperia was a 4G and now supposedly I have a 64 G but no SIM card in it. What do I do?

Yes. 4g is a type of network/phone ability service the GB is to do with memory size. That can go up to 256GB depending on your phone. My A6 can take a 256GB micro SD card but i think I've got a 64GB in there as it's what I had in my other Samsung. You'll have a slot for your Sim and another for your (micro?) SD card. If your phone didn't come with one you'll need to buy separately. Samsungs usually come with little "poking"apparatus to get the tray out. It's a little silver coloured metal thing with a loop at the top.

RIght, I guess I've made everyone's day with my questions. You can take the piss as long as you give me the proper answers to my questions as well, if not, shut up and go and play on your phone!
Hope this helps? In future, if you get another Samsung, make sure you download the samsung SmartSwitch app onto both devices as it literally sends everything (contacts, wallpaper, downloaded apps , pics etc) from one device to another, is remarkable.

Good luck.

Hmmm, it's a long way to - what does Lib call your area - the favelas.
I have been introduced to a Whiskey I actually like (and I went through 1.5 bottles of it already) but I'm afraid it might stay the only one I like. And it's Irish.

If you got 3 friends you got two more than you need for this

Myphoneexplorer from the man himself. To my surprise he's got an English version of his website (he's Austrian).

Re: Technophobe needs to get out of Jurassic Era!

I would have recommended getting a phone like your kid(s) have, ideally the one you see the most so you get regular tech support. Or at least a cheap model from the same brand. Makes it easier for them to tell you over the phone what you are doing wrong!

Anyway, Galaxy A7 should be fine once you learn your way around...

Good luck!

Wow, Curley... who peed in your Cheerios ? I came across the thread yesterday, read through the posts to the end, quoted the one where he said that he had finally bought something - added my comments and wished him good luck with the new phone... Why would you not thank someone for wishing them luck?

ROFLMAO. Yep, that was exactly the essence of my post. Not.

Were you the one who told the bloke who asked what to do after being caught speeding "I suggest, you shouldn't have been speeding". ?

You know what I mean?

Never mind. I'm quite sure McTavge will let us know whether a productive answer or you whishing him luck did the trick for him in the end.
