Yeah, iphones sell so badly because they are complicated and confusing...
Well, iPhones (first to market) are now massively outsold by Android devices, even by just one brand alone of Android devices, soooo...

(Although that probably has more to do with the innovation lead that Android has enjoyed over IOS devices in the last 3–4 years than simplicity of operation.)

Re: Technophobe needs to get out of Jurassic Era!

Conversation tonight, after I eventually received my nano SIM card:

- Me: it's funny, it's be going round this 98% circle for quite a while now.
- Daughter: yes, Dad, just leave it alone, it's charging.
- Me (with great excitement): Look, it's at 100 % now...oh wait, it's still a black screen.
- Daughter: have you turned it on, Dad?
- Me:

To be continued.

I've got a brand-new iphone, I've had it since before Christmas and it's still in the unopened box..... a box which is now stuffed towards the back of a kitchen cupboard because otherwise I could feel the damnèd thing staring at me.

I took fright at the very idea of needing to swap my twenty-five+ year-old sim for a smaller version of same and don't think I'm giving in any time soon.
#1 son insists it's simply a question of going into the apple shop (or similar) and asking for a new sim, I'm somehow not convinced it's that simple; it's a very old number and as such not registered as belonging to anyone.

Perhaps, like McTAVEGE, I've simply putting off having to learn how to use the stupid thing?
At the moment I'm just following this saga and secretly waiting for the technical disaster I can feel coming!

Re: Technophobe needs to get out of Jurassic Era!

It took me 2 hours just to find a link compatible with my old Xperia E1. Eventually waited for another 2 hours to have my data transferred to PC and just as the blue line reached the end and I was about to shout "Victory!", a message appeared to let me know the transfer had failed.

Lots of swearwords sprung to my mind and smashing a hammer down old and new phone was one of my favoured option! I'll sleep over it and see if I can wait patiently for my Swisscom appointment next week.

They used to charge 20fr for data transfer at Swisscom..Maybe that changed but they will not do anything diffefent than your kid would or a tutorial would show you?

Anjela, get it out of the box! It looks pretty! Did you know therr is a yarn ball emoji? I might hop over to S&B tonight.

#1 son is right .. new SIM cards are just blanks essentially, the provider - eg swisscom (not really the apple store) etc can put any number they want on there. So assuming it's actually a working number it should be fine.

For a non techie or somebody with low patience -- Don't screw around with data transfer between an old android and a new iphone - it's a recipe for frustration from both sides. What do you really need from the old phone? Photos/video? Upload to somewhere like picasa and leave them there. Numbers? save them google contacts, get them from there later.
Personally I have zero on my phone that ever needs to be transferred. When I change phone, I simply reset the old one and sell it or give it to wife.
The new one just gets everything automajically from the sky when i login

I was in Swisscom on rue de rive a few weeks ago and they were doing data transfers .. a little team of angry people upstairs fighting with data transfers. No idea what it costs.

** EDIT ** just noticed it wasn't a new iphone after all .. oops .. Anyways .. same still goes. just replace iphone with a7

I wonder how many of the #metoo supporters realise that Facebook started with a webpage where male university students could rate the attractiveness of female students....

I'm thinking I'll just keep it until I need a new phone back in the UK, and get a new sim + number then.
I don't 'do' emojis, bad memories of the LSD tabs that were stamped with that stupid yellow smiley face back in the early '70s. Lost a good friend.

Also; I'm rather attached to my old motorola clam..... often get curious/envious glances when I get it out of my bag.

MC, See you later then hopefully!!

Went there on Wednesday (appointment made no difference!), 1 hour's wait, indeed a lot of very "busy and angry people", it took them 10 minutes to transfer contacts and conversations from old phone (nothing else as I had no apps, no video, no photos). Suddenly as he hands my phone back to me, the guys informs me with a big smile that I will be charged 80 CHF on my next bill. I argued back but he said "Too late it's gone" as he pressed the button on his till / tablet thingie. I then spent another 30 minutes on the phone on Swisscom complaining bitterly and threatening to cancel the whole package with them. Eventually, success!

Note to self for the future: don't ever bother to go to Swisscom, ask your students, it took them 30 seconds to set it all up for me to my requirements, they're smarter, faster, a lot nicer...and free! (Well, still had to cancel the planned homework, the little buggers know how to negotiate their part of the bargain!)

Fr. 80.00 for 10 minutes is a stiff price but maybe they charged you for hanging around their premises for an hour too.

Even so, did you think they would do for free for you what the average person does themselves?
Shifting private date from one device to an other is not part of the provider's offer, so the logic thing would have been to ask about the price in advance.

<<they're [the students] smarter, faster, a lot nicer...and free!>>
Than whom? The teachers?

I am NOT, I repeat, I am NOT your average person! Setting up for free, well yes, was part of my whole update package, apparently.

I know, I know you're not. I thought that was clear in my post.

Setting up for free was in your update package? Check again if they really meant transferring private data from old handy to new one. (Seems unusual).
If so the case is clear: Fight the 80 franks! Calmly and cool of course: Copy the info where it says it's in the total price, add that to returning the bill. If you do ebanking just take the 80.00 off the total when paying (they hate that, it messes up their book-keeping big time ), or if the Fr. 80.00 are billed separatly simply click the "refuse" button.
You could even see the Ombudsmann about it if they get nasty. If you got watertight proof for it, that is.

Caustic humour? Yeah, how did you find out my middle name?

One quick phone call was all it took to have the 80 CHF cancelled. For once, I was impressed with customer service.

Maybe not so quick:

Quote:
... another 30 minutes on the phone on Swisscom
But the good news is that it took Swisscom 1 hour and 10 minutes to extract CHF 80 from you, and you just half an hour to get it back. So your time is worth more than twice theirs.
