Technophobe needs to get out of Jurassic Era!

In other words, my friends and family are giving me grief for having a first generation Android phone that can't even take WhatsApp and in any case, it is turned off most of the day!

However, recent family events meant I realised I was really disconnected and I need to show willing (albeit reluctantly). So I need a new phone but I have no idea where to start nor even what to ask, so maybe you can help me choose! Here are my specifics:

- I don't play any game and don't intend to, so no Apps for that.
- Requirement from family: "DAD, get WhatsApp!" (I originally thought it was some kind of Australian greeting!)
- I need to be able to access both my work and home emails.
- I like to listen to podcasts from the BBC and the odd Youtube video
- I am useless at directions here in Switzerland, so some kind of App/GPS would be great.
- Being able to download lots of music would be a seller!
- I've been told that something like 4G (somehow I don't think it's 4 grams) is a must nowadays, "especially Dad when you go on your own yodelling up in the mountains and nobody has any idea where you are!" (I quite like it this way, but never mind, I've given up on being out of touch anyway!)
- No need to have a camera (I will not give up my normal camera, never!) but a good microphone for when I want to record my will and last wishes, there is no misunderstand as to who inherit my old camera! Also must be able to record on the spot spontaneous yodelling!
- Digital screens and I have a lack of mutual trust! Whether PC, laptop or phone, the screens don't seem to respond well to my digital touch and freeze. Why is that? I am giving away bad vibes?
- I am painfully slow at texting and need to be able to do it both in English and French, so easy to set up language texting.
- Anything else you can think of?

Re: Technophobe needs to get out of Jurassic Era!

Any current Android phone will do everything you list (I can't imagine many that don't support 4th Generation mobile data i.e the "4G" your rellies refer to). There's no point going for one of the major brands, as any additional features they may have are clearly not required, and fundamentally you're paying for a name. So set yourself a budget of 200 chuffs or so and pick any one that takes your fancy under that price.

Edit: it seems that even 200 is a lot more than you need to spend (his you want to, of course), e.g. this chf76.90 one among many, all equally suitable, on the Digitec site.

Re: Technophobe needs to get out of Jurassic Era!

My bank forced the issue for me quite recently. I was perfectly happy with my old (and expensive) Samsung Android 4.x . I was forced to upgrade to Android 5.0 or better and, now that I have to pay for it myself (in the past my employer paid), have now what I consider to be an inferior but newer phone.

Re: Technophobe needs to get out of Jurassic Era!

Get Samsung either A3 or A5, the simplest of all Samsungs. Space for stuff and pretty reliable. I am obviously not an Apple person, don't like their strategies but do love their design. Get a decent data microcard for storing rehersals, works for me. When you start jelling better with technology, synch your cell with Sams tablet, laptop or whatever else.

Ah, yes, the size of the screen is an important factor, as my eyesight is not what it used to be! Although I don't want to end with the Hummer of Smartphones either, I like "discreet", not "show off".

Re: Technophobe needs to get out of Jurassic Era!

Surely an iPhone is better for a non-techie?

You can do all the stuff you want
No tech knowledge required
You can walk in personally to the Apple store in Geneva for help
It will last a long time
It just works

No need to spend 1000chf on the latest model, a two year old model will last another few years .

Yeah for Chrome. I'd avoid Apple since it is a trendy and expensive brand (and too cool for school, I guess all kids have it these days), but I am not sure whether JohnH is right or not. I always had Samsung apart from one htc, and it was always very intuitive to use. But maybe Apple is better for a real start, not sure. Samsung A3 or A5 always worked, low maintenance and low cost when part of a plan.

A cheap Huawei would be the correct phone for you. Cheap enough to throw at a wall without remorse when you get frustrated by post matchbox technology. Does mean pictures too.

It's compatible.. In that chrome is just a web browser.. You can install that on the iPhone if you want. Although it has it's own browser so not really any need.

Or if you mean you use a "chrome book" laptop? Again they can talk to each other, transfer stuff between etc.

As long as I don't have to read 5 page notices in German, French and Chinese and can simply instruct vocally my phone to "work now and do as you're bloody told!", then I am happy.

Instruct it vocally and yodelly. . Get a yodel as your ringtone, even better.

And start texting with your thumbs (yes, both), forget the index and glasses on the tip of your nose.

Re: Technophobe needs to get out of Jurassic Era!

It's one of these questions with no one correct answer I think ..

Sure you can meet of your feature requirements for a very low priced 'throwaway' phone.. If (when) it goes south you'll find yourself back here or on some techie forum trying to fiddle out what's wrong..and end up throwing it in a bush.

A thousand options in between...

At the other end of the scale is iPhone, even if you buy an older second hand one, you can book a session in the store at Rive, they will set it up for you and explain it and you can go back for help if you need it.

Yeah I'm an Apple fan but in this case i recommend purely for the support and ease of use angle, the features and probably price are overkill.

My wife’s solution, as she prefers to avoid smartphones: designate teenager as tech support and give them her credit card. There after dump phone on teenager when it does not work.

Re: Technophobe needs to get out of Jurassic Era!

I would say go for an older iPhone too. They work straight out of the box. I have a 71 year-old friend who is not very techie, but possibly slightly more techie than you. I can't count the number of times her Android phone has stopped working because of some error she has made, or she hasn't been able to do something because of a lack of knowledge.

I would suggest an iPhone 6 Plus. Its old enough to be a reasonable price these days, large enough for you to see and text, and new enough not be obsolete.
