Old ipads what to do with them?

Hi all,

I have 2 ipad mini 1st generation wifi only which unfortunately aren't available for apple trade in. Both have cracked screens so I don't think anyone would buy them on forums such as this one. I can see 3 options:

- recycle (I don't think donating is an option as they are clearly cracked and don't meet Swiss standards )
- try to repair it myself (not sure if there are kits out there to do this - probably not)
- sell for a really cheap price to some shop that repairs these and resells for a profit

Both ipads are fully functional (aside from the cracked screen), what would you do?

they're both pretty bad. one is across the full horizontal length of the screen and the other is on both corners and then across the screen vertically

My thought here is to buy a refurbished unit from Apple or a good 2nd hand one. I was actually hoping I'd get a few francs for these from anyone wanting to tear these down for fun but I don't think this was realistic

I've been interested in taking one of these things apart and tinkering with them in the past. But fully expecting that they will not work again afterwards

Re: Old ipads what to do with them?

You could return it apple for good quality recycling. The other option is ifixit which sells kits/parts and offers video guides for self repair..

Re: Old ipads what to do with them?

I think you can always return them via Apple's return-service "Give Back":

https://www.apple.com/chde/trade-in/

My mom returned her broken 21" iMac 2007-edition there, in 2015 or 2016.
While initially, she was told she'd not receive anything, she later got a cheque for 20€ in the mail.

Returning to Apple is supposedly the most environment-friendly way to handle it.

Depending on what you want to use it for, may dictate if you should buy a new one or fix it.

Personally I would fix it.

€44.95 from ifixit ... https://eustore.ifixit.com/en/Parts/...archparam=ipad

or CHF 413.95 for a new iPad mini 4

You choose!

I would ask on Facebook marketplace if anyone wants them before i took it to the recycling center. At least you give it the chance to have a second life.

Another vote for fixing it, but I fix things just because they are broken, so then I have an as-new gadget I have no use for rather than a broken gadget I have no use for. I can't stand to see a potentially working thing get binned.

Re: Old ipads what to do with them?

There are a couple of old ones here. First or second gen maybe. There are no new software updates and they are somewhat slow when viewing modern websites. They are still useful though.

One is wirelessly connected to audio and functions for dedicated music streaming.

The other is often used in workshop to lookup information or view pdf files. For awhile it was used with Swisscom tv app to view listing information and function as remote control. I’m not sure if the app still works though and newer versions may not wirk.

When necessary, also useful as emergency bathroom reader.

There is also an iPad mini 2 here with a screen cracked in about 10 places. It’s also still quite usable for media consumption and reference reading.

As I think about it, it’s hard to imagine not finding a use for one. Hot plate. Cutting board. Paint palette. Whatever you can use a sturdy, smooth, flat surface for.
